Like, I like PlayStation games and can consider myself a fan. But I'm not a fanboy. If they release shit, I'll call it out and not buy it. Some people just have this tribal mentality that playstation can do no bad and all Xbox does is terrible. They are the same kind of dumbass that enables corporate stooges like Phil dickbender to be successful.

It's understandable, specially after the TLOUP1 PC port issues. They better take their time to make sure they release a great, complete and polished game that performs super well, instead of a half finished broken mess.

If the game needed more time to be improved, this is the correct decision.

Also, it's nice to see they confirrmed to be working on another single player game. I bet that the single player game is the Uncharted game teased in the Live from PS5 ads, and if not a new IP.

This project is going to be canceled.
They didn't cancel it, they delayed it. Naughty Dog took some extra time to implement improvements suggested by Bungie. To delay games is super common, to cancel them not much in top studios like Naughty Dog specially with games publicly teased.

Can It be in worse shape than any of the gaas games shown yesterday?
Unlike Naughty Dog, the teams at Bungie, Haven and Firewalk have many key people who worked in some of the most successful AAA GaaS ever. So probably yes.

I mean, not in polish of visuals, combat, amount stuff developed, fun and so on, that part pretty likely already is great. But instead in the GaaS part to keep engaged players in long term: their plans to keep expanding and evolving it over time, collecting/filtering/implementing player feedback, a long term player progression and unlocks, design of events and seasons roadmap, related balance of certain things, internal game KPI metrics and statistics monitoring, security, server structure, scalability, stability and balancing and so on.

This postlaunch side is key for GaaS, and has nothing to do with non GaaS titles, even most multiplayer ones. It's totally understandable that even if ND would have skilled people needed an expert hand to guide them and help them improve in this area. And this is one of the reasons of why they buy Bungie. To help them improve with these things.

One of the best single player devs out there stuck on dev hell because of an AAA as a service.
Game is in development hell.
Delaying a game isn't development hell. Delays are very common in game development, but most of them aren't publicly announced. Specially when they still haven't formally announced and shown the game.

ND right now:
- Some people stuck supporting a botched PC port of an unnecessary remake.
- Some people stuck trying to ship a GaaS that is now many years in development yet hasn't been shown
- Neil Drukman writing for TV
- Nothing being done with their other IPs besides TLoU

TLoU Part II had the best gameplay for a TPS in 2020 and instead of that being converted on great multiplayer mode (that they could use as a starting point) we got nothing.

Dude, the game is shelved (aka canceled). They just said it in a nice way.

Yea I forgot, it's even worse than just botching the port, they actually made a completely unnecessary remake instead of a new game.

The most obvious thing ever and Sony is doing it after so many other publishers already failed miserably doing it. It makes no sense.

Sony had a great thing going on for them, they were one of the most productive publishers and had carved their own niche of high quality single player games with great production value, that allowed them to sell 10m+/20m+ per game while also selling 120m+ consoles per gen.

Now they decided to try their luck in the segment where production value is one of the least determinant factors for success while also weakening their own platform and strengthening their competition (Xbox and Steam).

This is exactly what I would expect when the guy behind Guerrilla games is making the calls, a studios that was always extremely technically competent yet always fell short because of lack of vision. Fire this guy an put Shuhei Yoshida back at that position as soon as possible for at least another 5 years before trying to replace him with someone else.

I think it's time Kenichiro Yoshida orders an independent review of SIE. Have Kaz in advisory role... I'm sure he's a phone call away.

You shall not wait for the ship to hit stones to then try to steer it left or right and salvage the ship with a broken bow. Proactive leadership > reactive leadership. Bad numbers only come to reflect bad decisions and carry over years in the making - it's hardly ever, instantaneous. Warning signs on the current course are there for all with a keen eye not obsessed with numbers.

If it was PS5 exclusive it would be released by now.
I can't deny that it's quite the coincidence that as soon as they start developing for PC they release one of the worst ports of all time and immediately announce they are in dev hell.

We are talking about one of the most productive and technically skilled studios in the industry here.

Exactly. People believe developing for PC is some side project press A to port and done. It takes extra work. Extra work that takes away from PS5.

ND even changed the way they make their engie to accommodate PC. Going so far as to add something to their engine to make sure people with slow HDD drives can run their games. They had the audacity to put that bullshit on the PSblog. What PlayStation fan wants to know that? You downgraded your PS engine because of PC and now won't full advantage of PS5......yay?

PC is the worst decision Sony has made for PlayStation.

Sony already shown in the past a roadmap for first year after the Bungie acquisition, and one of the things that Bungie was going to do was to review the PS Studios GaaS titles under development sharing with them their expertise and experience.

The message in the OP is very clear, there is an official message explaining that they need extra time, so delayed it. Which it's a fact that shows that they didn't cancel it. Only delayed it, something common in game development.

So makes sense to think that, as the Bloomberg article says, as part of their review Bungie asked them to improve certain GaaS specific stuff. And they need time to make these changes, additions and improvements.

And while some people redesign and implement these parts, some other folks will temporally work in other ND projects. Nothing rare or bad, it's common stuff. Most games have changes and delays.

Makes more sense than to think that evil Jimbo and Hermen have a secret conspiracy in the shadows and want to lie to players, saying that the game has been delayed when the reality is that it has been cancelled or something like that.

But well, it doesn't suprise me after seeing many anti-Sony/Jimbo/Hermen hate and conspiracy theory messages, that often are made rejecting clear facts as their own statements or numbers. Chill, guys.

And WTF is Bungie doing telling Naughty Dog the game isn't good enough?

TLOU multiplayer was so fun to play. Very unique game.

I'm not too bummed by this news

We were just laying into Microsoft a week ago about their lack of quality control on Redfall. How they went so hands off it became a disaster

That Bungie and their Live Service Centre of Excellence is actually making critical decisions seems good to me

When Sony launches live service games, they need to be aiming for 90+ GOTY contention like their single player games. The quality bar shouldn't be any lower

The wording of that Bloomberg article is interesting

Sony has invested heavily in “games as a service,” or video games designed to be monetized beyond their initial sales through ongoing purchases. As part of that push it asked another of its video-game studios, Seattle-based Bungie, to evaluate the games across its portfolio. Bungie raised questions about the The Last of Us multiplayer project’s ability to keep players engaged for a long period of time, which led to the reassessment.

To me it reads like a Halo Infinite scenario. Solid multiplayer game upfront, with poor planning to actually be a service and deliver constant content updates. I think this is where the extra time might go, having content ready to go in the months after launch

All that said I can only hope this project stayed as a bit of a side piece for Naughty Dog and their single player project has been moving ahead regardless

It didn’t even get cancelled. It seems to have its scope changed with a delay and downsizing. The rumor is that talent shifted to other projects at the studio.

Right now it seems it may get repackaged as a retail game like Arkham Knights was.
