Global Marketwhare (includes hardware, software, subscriptions, accesories, etc):

By Segment:

By Monetization:

console-gaming-market-monetisation-2022.png

Some tibits:
  • The sales gap between PlayStation and Xbox unit sales will widen in H1 2023
  • Global subscription volume was down YOY but increased 5.6% in revenue due average higher prices (see below)
  • Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo meant that average spending per subscription grew 7% across the year (in $ terms) as consumers traded up to more expensive tiers
  • Microsoft extended its market share lead in the console subscription segment and delivered an all-time high for Xbox Game Pass subscribers in the final three months of the year.
  • The weakest area of monetisation was in-game and downloadable content, which fell almost 15% as the market re-acclimatised to more normal post-pandemic consumer behaviour

Seems high for Xbox. Again, we have confirmed numbers from microsoft that they occupy a 30% share of a market that includes only PS vs Xbox.

They are likely even below that number.

119.5M for the shitty underpowered Switch?
That's not just Nintendo IP pulling their weight. Sony, get a portable PS4 made, ffs!
This is also parents buying their kids a kiddy console and noticing that it goes unused because they really want a PS or Xbox (sometime).

While not perfect, Ampere is trustworthy and actually have a decent reputation they'd like to keep.

Sub 20M for Xbox when the PS5 had stock shortages most of the year is just awful. Like, with no shortages we'd probably see the PS5 well above 30M and the Xbox probably sub 18M.

Resetera added this to their thread title to make these numbers look good for xbox somehow

"Sony lost 1.3% market share to Xbox and other insights"

Nothing can make Xbox's bloodbath massacre vs PS5's supply constraint look good.
That's quite the spin from resetera. Seems like they've hated PS since before this gen even started, lol.

i struggle to find even 20 games on the vita that are worth a shyte, it's my portable PS1 player and if Sony would actually get those games running on modern PS hardware i'd see no use for it anymore. They did an absolutely horrible job with that console.

it's best games like Persona 4 and Danganronpa are all on Switch now. There is no point in a handheld PlayStation console moving forward. Vita's top publishers like NiS, Atlus, and Limited Run have consolidated their businesses behind the Switch as well.

Next up, Switch outsells the PS2 to become the best selling console in human history. muahahaha. You love to see it! :devilish:

Yeah i noticed that.

Sony didn’t lose market share to Xbox all. PS5 was badly supply constrained in the beginning of the year up until summer. This is when you saw MS boasting In their financial reports about “gaining market share over competitors for 2 quarters.”

The fact that Xbox could only make up 1.3% while PS5 had no stock is pretty fucking terrible.

By now with PS5 stock being available that 1.3% has vanished.

I'm not a sales guy guesstimator (@Heisenberg007 and @thicc_girls_are_teh_best take the crown), but I can see a world where at the moment PS5 is above 34M and Xbox is below 21M. This quarter so far may have actually been a 2:1 split or even beyond that.

Tinfoil hat time: The timing of this news (same weeks as Microsfts final arguments before the CMA) and the headline pull quotes kind of makes me wondered if this wasnt planend by sony in conjunction with ampere. Hear me out, 18 million seems good for xbox and should be factored into sonys arguments for why microsoft doesnt need activision if its not too late for that. The headline also says sony lost marketshare (albeit not alot.) We see microsft playing the media game all the time, and with this being the most important and favorable so far to sony jurisdiction (The CMA) i could see sony playing the media game to help their case the most.

Or it could just be pure coincidence but i remember last year getting the ampere numbers in like late january. Im probably crazy though :p

Ampere have a reputation to keep. I would seriously doubt the timing on this has anything to do with the deal. They are not VGChartz.

it's kind of crazy that series doesn't even have one real exclusive yet. The CrossfireX campaign mode was the only true exclusive the console had, and now it's been delisted and removed for sale due to it's low quality.

that about sums up this generation for Xbox.

Ngage and Stadia hardware will probably retain their value more than these systems in the years to come, lol. Ngage collecting is already more lucrative than Xbox right now, tbh.

I'm not sure what you can even do with a Stadia once the servers are shut down.

The xbox machines work for some purpose, so they have games, just not the Sony\Nintendo exclusive ones and those from third party that aren't ported over to these machines.... This is still a lot of games that someone can have, and if they are not paying attention to the rest of gaming at all they may not feel like they are missing out on anything at all.
