So what all do you guys like about Larian's games? I don't know a whole lot about the studio.
divinity 1 and 2 at their cores are very traditional RPG's. You need to think outside the box to solve some puzzles, read books and listen to conversations to find and access hidden loot and it is not an easy game (unless you understand the game, in which case you can play it against itself and it is a lot of fun).
Divinity 1 excels in fights and set pieces. They are fantastic fun and can be played many different ways. My brother and I have completed the game 6 times in co-op, using janky character builds and each set piece plays differently.
Divinity 2 excels in the character balance and design. You can really go a bit mental with how you build your character and what it does. Again me and my brother have played it 5 times (we're on our sixth run) each time with different builds.
Each game can be played solo with a team of up to 4 (you and 3 others) in 2 player co-op with 2 teams of 2, 4 player co-op or 2 player co-op with just you and a friend. They have a mode called 'lone wolf' where you get 2 times the amount of Xp and skill points when levelling up, so that you can create a Duo team of tanky-jankyness. It plays into the games' story as the game is about 2 adventurers but also about a team of 4 people searching for that team of 2.
You can also kill 99.9% of characters in the game. rolling through town cutting down everyone in a blaze of fireball hellfire is a lot of fun.
I prefer the character build of 2 but the world, story and set pieces of 1.
The skill trees, characters, juxtaposition of charm and brutality, hope and despair, humour and devestation, mixed with colourful graphics and bloody gore, make Divinity the best RPGs of all time. They are right up there with Fallout, BG, NWN etc. That on its own is high praise, but pulling those kinds of games out of the bag in the modern industry is a miracle.
The only disappointment with Larian taking on BG3, is that the studio dedicated all of its' resources to making it perfect and paying true homage to the game. That meant development was paused for Divinity 3 and a 'tactics'/xcom style divinity game which I can't wait to play.
If isometric Old_School RPGs are your jam, you won't find better than Divinity in the modern age.
