Starfield design director Emil Pagliarulo knows the sci-fi RPG isn't "everyone's cup of tea", but he still reckons it's one of Bethesda's most ambitious projects as well as its best in a lot of ways.

"I think in a lot of ways, Starfield is the hardest thing Bethesda has ever done," Pagliarulo said. "We pushed ourselves to make something totally different. To just jam into an Xbox the biggest, richest space simulation RPG anyone could imagine. That we pulled it off makes Starfield something of a technical marvel. It's also, in a lot of ways, the best game we've ever made. But for us, most importantly, Starfield has its own unique personality, and now sits right next to Fallout and Elder Scrolls."

You rather not say anything unpleasant, since the guy is doing his job, But fallout 76 with its multiplayer was clearly more ambitious then skyrim (same engine) in a space setting.

Fallout 76 in its current state is unironically more fun than Starfield.
Lots more to do, less loading screens, and both much easier & much more building customization

I don't doubt about it being their hardest game to develop.

But.

Well... the game is not anywhere close to their best work.
Sorry... quests lines, game structure, options, RPG elements, etc all fall way behind what they created in the past.
Even games that have bigger scope but failed to delivery at launch like the last Fallout was more ambitious and a better game than Starfield.

And just a reminder, Skyrim came out in 2008('s eigth month's eigth day.) Starfield being the massive boondoggle that it was has lead directly to Bethesda's best franchise going, probably, 19 or 20 years between releases. What a fucking own-goal.

OpenMW, hacked together by two blokes in their spare time, is a better engine. Let that sink in.

Beth devs couldn't program their way out of a paper bag, anyone who knew how to do anything is long gone and the only people left are a bunch of diversity hires that are incompetent at their jobs, why do you think it's taken them so long to dev anything after F4? They're too busy scanning models of avacado toast and getting thier daily affirmations from tumblr.

Remember during the launch last year when people were making up so many excuses for how mediocre the game is?
  • The game gets good after 15-20 hours, so you can't judge it unless you've played that much
  • The game runs poorly because the engine allows you to collect hundreds of sandwiches
  • The procedural generated planets are empty and boring because of "realism"
  • The art design and color scheme are dull because of "Space Punk"
