We estimated that the total development cost of Black Myth: Wukong is more than 300 million RMB ($43M USD). In order to help the company enjoy tax incentives in a timely and correct manner, the Hangzhou tax department has established a long-term communication mechanism with the company to provide us with accurate guidance on the declaration of high-tech enterprises and the standardization of research and development expenses. The financial manager of Hangzhou Game Science Interactive Technology Co., Ltd., the game developer, said,

In 2023, Game Science will enjoy an additional deduction of more than 28 million RMB ($4M) for R&D expense.

No unnecessary expenses, a low cost base in China, high level talent and a strong vision that didn't get lost on the journey....

Many publishers could learn a lot.
How dare you sir, You are talking too much sense which is not allowed

A Good "modern audience" video game needs to spend on prime directives listed below not the useless shit like gameplay and design -

1. Hire a Consultancy to give employment to the gender studies graduates
2. Spend copious amounts on useless motion capture cinematics
3. Hire a bloated marketing and community team from the reddit and discord mod pool, botting likes and comments for engagement etc
4. Lastly budget to spend on PR so after your game bombs you can hire people to write articles calling the customers ists and phobes

Well no shit, that's why everything is cheaper to make in China, when cost of living; labor costs; tax benefits; costs of other goods and services to make and promote the game are cheaper there.

Sony/PS continues to ignore Asia from a first party level even thoe for what seemed to be the last 4-5 years is Asia base studios producing quality of not goty tier games w a significantly lower budget because of the weak yen or lower overall budget.

Instead PS spender 5 billion getting 3 studios 1 being Bungie that’s in flame the other firewalk that burn 200-300 million (w the acquisition cost) & firesprite that’s working on Until Dawn that will be day n date on PC (likely) & flop because who ask for more until dawn & it’s a multiplat so no need to buy it on PS when steam has it for cheaper & since it’s multiplat it can’t be positioned to push the PS hardware, storefront or subscription/mtx

Can't wait to see more studios and pubs from China. This massive success would make them into a big player in gaming soon. For their first game, they really did amazing. Maybe the game has flaws, like other games, but you should expect more from their upcoming games.

Nintendo been doing this. Imagine how big a budget a game like Mario Wonders had? Ratchet & Clank rift apart costed $70 million & it had mocap from my knowledge when most if not all Nintendo games use animation instead of mocap.

I wouldn’t be surprised if a game like Mario Wonders had a budget of 5-10 million if not around 15-25 million. Nintendo makes games w significantly lower budget making it less risky + you can expect higher sells & return if the game itself has a good story, well reviewed & ride of the name & exclusivity Nintendo continues to double down on making Nintendo fans feel comfortable & investing in the Nintendo platform, storefront & first party games.

Well, those Californian devs better sit up straight and pay attention... These other devs are catching up quick. Your prestige status is lost if your product isnt as enjoyable even if it looks a little bit better.

I'm not sure if that is good or bad.

Because that shows how cheap we are compared to the rest of the world.

And don't come to say we receive what is fair in your country... it is not... most here do same and/or more/better but receives way less than what they deserves.
Well probably over 90% of the population here have bad salaries.

If you develop a game in Brazil will indeed be way cheaper than US... same for China.

And I don't think the solution is move the development to these cheap countries but in fact the cheap country politics changes and start to pay the workers for what they deserves... I'm more talking about Brazil but I'm sure it apply to Chine too (it is not about the regime btw... really some developers here receives laughable salaries).

To some degree, the movie "The Creator" had many studios shook due to being only $84M in budget while looking as if it had $300-400M budget because they went with a proconsumer cameras with high low light sensitivity so they could go with even cheap gimbals and tube lights. They even added grain because the image was too clean and bought a cheap LUT for their Sony FX3's. 🤣

Most of the budget went into VFX, and it had one of the most organic looking VFX ever. Watched it in the Cinema due to the hype over Sony FX3 which uses the same sensor of my Sony A7SIII.:sneaky:

If you want a movie that pictures the future of AI then you would really enjoy it.

What this means is tech is getting cheaper, and the bubble of over-bloated budgets will burst soon. Same goes to gaming. Motion capture and many crazy expensive equipment will become useless soon:

Bruh you need to have talent for Nintendo, The top graduates from Tokyo and Kyoto university join Nintendo, Cant say the same for Murica. The standard for hiring at Sony Japan is way higher than in the States too

IIRC The studio was even paying much lower than industry standard for Black Myth: Wukong this was due to their earlier projects not doing well, they couldn't afford to pay them. This game was them tripled down one last time with their investing partner, studio was likely to close if it didn't work out.

When you pay people pennies, that's what happens. If there's one thing China's known for is cheap labor. On one hand you get cheap games, on the other you want people to be paid livable wages.

This is their first game though? Also that doesn't seem to be correct as iirc this studio started off with some people who left tencent, they only had 10 devs when they announced the game in 2020

Two mobile games released before they started working on Black Myth: Wukong in 2018.
They even moved to another city to lower the costs, it was looking not so great.
