Helldivers 2 is a $39.99 Gaas extraction game, and didn't flop. So......

Helldivers also had the ironic memes surrounding it w comparison to starship trooper & there’s nothing like it.

You got Escape from tarkov & other PC centric extraction centered around china/korea. Extraction isn’t a causal friendly type game like the director himself said.

You had the COD extraction that died & was lock behind the main game.

A extraction player is going to stick to Escape from tarkov because it’s more realistic unless marathon is free & most won’t cough up $40 for a pvp pve game that leans more pvp when they could stick to Valorant, Apex etc that are free. IMO best chance for this to blow up is free to play.

I didn’t even mention the YouTubers that will grift marathon as “Could this be PS next Concord” bringing up the ccu on steam

Here we go again... Guess what? Sony isn't Interested in racing towards the bottom with their GaaS games and I'm glad they aren't going the F2P route.

Bungie is a premium multiplayer developer and I would love to see them right their ship and have another hit.

Reality is, to survive & carve a large enough market to thrive will be hard if it’s not free especially for an extraction shooter which is not casual friendly.

The whole “Bungie is a premium multiplayer developer” is cool back 5+ years ago but even Valve who’s notorious w live service Deadlock only sits at 100k if not below as a free to play & Riot who makes Valorant only makes free to play because it allows them to carve a market easier such as Riot fighting game which will be free to play & certainly be a big hit in the fighting scene. Even new studios like the studio behind The finals can barely crack a community as free to play & they have the background of ex battlefield devs.

Sony best chance in multiplayer live service is free to play. If Fairgames is $40 that’s dead on the spot. This game needs to have a easily 100K ccu on PC alone daily months after release to recover the acquisition of Bungie & cover the declined of Destiny 2 till Destiny 3

Marathon isn’t in some crowded market. Extraction’s closest mainstream game was Helldivers.

Keyword is mainstream. That’s what bungie is trying. Glad it’s still got sci fi monsters even tho I’m not expecting to love it.

It may be also cheaper to produce than Destiny. Marathon is still also the smaller project too (but that can change when dollars are exchanged and plans for service).

You misunderstand. Epic Games, Blizzard, EA, and Activision used to make exclusively single player games. The natural progression in this medium is to start making SP and then evolve into a MP focused company. PlayStation was the last great, giant SP company in gaming. That's no longer the case.

MP games and SP games can co exist in like they have done for decades ( why has gaming become like this haha)

They'll coexist like 2D games coexist alongside 3D games. We're witnessing the transition away from 2D (SP) towards 3D (MP).

They shifted their releases and it’s still about the product releases. Destiny expansions will launch in summer now. And there’s also two of them in a single year. Marathon won’t be directly on top of the summer expansion for instance.

Jason’s comments about “not looking good” was outlook if it will even make a 2025 release. They’re cutting it close but playtests have gotten more frequen. No idea really

The transition from 2D to 3D was about 10 years. The transition from SP to MP will be about 20 years. Remedy has been hurting with their poor SP sales, so much so that they're now making MP games. Sega is now making 5 big budget "Super Games" which are all Live Service titles. Sony is now investing more into MP than SP. The best selling Capcom game (by a wide margin) is a Live Service MP game.

This is how the transition happens. There's still some great 2D games being made today.

Will definitely be cheaper and easier to produce than Destiny.

My biggest issue with Destiny is that it is difficult to get back into after not playing for a while. Same goes for new players trying to get into Destiny.

I reckon Marathon won’t have this issue.

Bungie should have been a very positive and exciting purchase, it was for me.

Sony should have let the experts in gaas do their thing and kept their main PSstudios focused on what they always did. That's my only issue...

But you're right, so many are dooming on this without any cause at all. Lots want Bungie to die because they symbolise GAAS to them and then Xbox fanboys probably want Bungie to die and are amplifying everything because they don't want to see Bungie successful under PlayStation at all.

I agree that Bungie still has some amount of cache and marathon will attract attention of players initially at least but the question is what is the contingency in case after the initial hype the playerbase plummets like The Finals or Xdefiant, destiny is also not doing too hot after the initial honeymoon phase of the final shape. What is the backup plan for making this $3.6 Billion albatross around the neck a profitable investment which so far seems to be more and more a failed venture.

On a personal note I have nothing but disdain for Bungie employees so I will be cheerleading on the sidelines for their game to flop commercially.
