Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 (GfK) launch sales are 10% lower compared with Modern Warfare 3. This is almost entirely due to a drop in sales on Xbox.

I think it was predictable that there were people who were on GamePass Ultimate already who normally buy CoD who obviously weren't going to buy it outside of GPU.

That's a tremendous amount of money to lose with absolutely no gain. Even the number of people with GPC who upgrade to GPU (which is why they made that distinction in the first place) won't erase much of the losses unless these people stay on GPC through out the year.

The obvious response is they're going to have to increase the price of GPU even more than they already have.

Worse is if the game declines in popularity. To keep spending the same amount of resources only to lose significant revenue... would be a disaster. Cutting costs will probably increase the decline. I do wonder if they'll move away from annual releases at some point and maybe increase the base price of CoD to 80.

From install base
Around 90k for COD retail launch (Including ~80k sales from PS).

Last year was slighty over 100k (Including also ~80k sales from PS).
So xbox saw a ~50% sales decline from last year.

Also keep in mind that they cannibalized the sales that were gonna be %100 going to them (no external platform cuts).

Simply insane to witness this.

Can you re-word this?

"Steady" but apparentely declining? Dring is not consistent here.

The decline is largely lead by the decrease in xbox units as opposed to PlayStation. Not sure how you missed that.

They're trying to get brand-new subs and their associated microtransactions, but they're risking a reduction in the existing revenue they get from Xbox users who buy COD every year for $70 (which is massive given that they're getting %100 of all COD sales revenue on Xbox). This is what Tim Stuart referred to as "high-margin" gaming revenue during that infamous Wells Fargo talk.

It's entirely possible for a promotional move to cannibalize more revenue than it incrementally adds to the baseline revenue.

Note that this entire cannibalization vs incremental calculation does not happen for COD PS5 users because they don't have access to GP, and Microsoft didn't make the game available on PS's rival subscription services.

PC is more of a complex case because you have multiple launchers with various royalties and GP exists there too, so it's very hard to discuss without having more info.

I'm sure you know what cannibalization and incremental volume are (they are generally terms that come up in demand planning), but I'm adding links below for general benefit:

This is just a small piece for UK and for physical only. Just imagine they cut 50% of all sales on xbox where they were getting 100% of the cut and i would argue more than 50% given how much of the xbox console base probably uses gamepass to begin with

I thought there was going to be a bigger decrease.
Xbox users are a minority for COD console sales (PS4/5 is like %88), and PC/Mobile users are not captured in any physical numbers.

What's happened is that the minority became a complete non-entity in game sales.

The game is better than MW 3 last year at least from the beta I played, The sales should do better accounting for digital and even match MW2 sales overall. The useless DAU/MAU metric will be sky high on PS5 this weekend with MH wilds beta and blops 6.

The challenge for xbox is retaining the new people who just bought a month of gamepass to play the campaign and not bleed numbers from the people who usually buy cod every year. On the other hand they can gain a lot if they can convince CoD bros on xbox to subscribe for 240$ a year rather than pay 70$ and with the average american IQ you never know people can actually do dumb shit like that.
