All that MAU talk brought me back to 2013 when Xbox was flopping and Phil was all about MAU. That MAU kept growing and it's now bigger than ever...but it doesn't change the fact that Xbox is more irrelevant than ever and dying.

The MAU is meaningless and always will be.
This is what they got, for attracting people who don't want to pay.

All those Users mean nothing, when they are all cheapskates, who want to only pay for VPN-bought Gamepass keys, and never bought anything!

I still remember the moment they stopped publishing console sales, and declared MAU to be most important metric.

To promptly stop mentioning MAU's within a year in their quaterly financial reports, but now that they have candy crush it's the number one metric again.

First let's address pace. The PS5 is not far from the pace of the PS4, which outsold the PS3.

Second let's look how gaming has changed since PS1 and PS2. While the PS2 played PS1 games, PS1 was largely discontinued quickly because there wasn't a ton of value in making PS1 games. Now we have GaaS which are the most popular games on the market.

Why do you think that's an indictment on Sony?

Microsoft followed this strategy. How did that work out for them?

How many companies follow the same "strategy" (I'm putting it in quotation marks because metrics aren't strategy), but have different execution?

There are absolutely people who don't pay much money with GaaS, but that's not most of the market. These players actually spend tremendous amounts of money on these games and it's why GaaS own a larger share of the market spend than single use titles.

Ps5 is not far off the pace of the PS4...so it IS off of the pace of the PS4 with fewer options of competition; Xbox series is doing worse than Xbone and the Switch is at the end of the gen (which was new when the PS4 was ramping up)

GaaS works by milking the fuck out of 1% of players. That 1% can sustain a game, but not a console or generation.

You must be a marketing account bot to purposely not understand the difference.

Fewer options? The first 4 years of the PS4's life cycle there was no Switch, it was Wii U which had bombed. The PS5 competes with a significantly cheaper XSS which represents half the sales of the XBS. You also have a pandemic and historic inflation.

The neat thing about the revenue charts on the console OS is that it will include MT and DLC revenue for online games.

And of course online the same games are topping these revenue charts week after week. It’s not just engagement fluff. They’re also the most consistent and biggest money makers.

Engagement is often used as fluff and can be bogus manufactured hype. Many games don’t have the players behind it spending. The kings of mountain do tho… it’s a discussion requiring nuance for sure.

Exactly, Ps4 on its fourth year was competing with switch, and even then, still sold gangbusters. Ps5 has no competition like generations before. Xss? Lol, lmao even. They sold what, 10 million consoles?
