Jeff Ross said it was Bend management who didn’t want to make another one. Sony probably would have greenlit it if they pitched it. I dont think sony shuts down a lot of projects studios want to do unless theres some larger reason, like maybe it would conflict with other plans they have.

Kinda wish someone would do a proper write up on this so we stop getting people whining about how sony didn’t green light the game or secretly hates it because it didn’t score a 90mc or sell 10m copies.

I saw someone today say it was cancelled after they started production because of change of management at sony lol

Bend management never sent it up the chain to Sony which they should have done. If Sony would have said no, fine but the studio's management shouldn't have that say. It's just UGH!! because I was really looking forward to Days Gone 2 on PS5. The hordes were great on PS4 so imagine on PS5 what they could have done.

Not getting Days Gone 2 is thus far my biggest disappointment of the generation. :(

Well....I disagree.

Look..I want Sony to allow those teams to freely create, if the team's higher ups feel a new IP makes more sense, the so be it.

You telling me if Bend told Sony they wanted to do a new IP and Sony instead made them do Days Gone 2 by force, that would be better? So....I want Days Gone 2 as well, but I want it when BEND 100% is ready, willing and freely able to do that, not by force or something. Someone needs to manage the studio and I'm more ok with them having the power to do that, then a forced sequel and a miserable team. Far worse things can happen in gaming, this really nothing.

All that is saying is the team feels the new IP makes sense, Sony is ok with that...they can revisit Days Gone later and tbh, if you love Days Gone, want the BEST for Days Gone, you should feel ok with them having a new IP in between, that might mean you get Days Gone 2 on PS6 or Days Gone 2 on PS5 as a beefy next gen only title taking full advantage of all that they just learned from that new IP.

All this can only helpl Days Gone 2 and maybe its better we know it was the TEAM'S CHOICE to do a new IP, the Sony saying no. If Sony says no, that shit is likely never to happen lol, but if Bend says no, it very well could just mean "not right now, but later". If they choose to, it makes more sense for all of us then if the have no choice in that matter.

So I agree that the hordes look great on PS4, imagine it on PS5 AFTER Bend already has their feet went after that new IP?

I just think that Bend management should have sent it up the chain of command and let Sony decide which they do for every game anyway. Sony either greenlights the game or they say no. My guess is that they would have green lit the game especially if the rumors of a movie are true.

Studio/team choice doesn't mean much if the majority of the original team are no longer there. Of course, most people who didn't work on the original game wouldn't want to work a sequel so they go with the new IP.

It is what it is and will see what Bend Studio does next but regardless of it all, doesn't change the fact that im still disappointed.

The team should be free to have that choice of what they work on.

I don't see any evidence of that. If it was me, I want the most unique and different games on my resume, not 1 fucking IP. As an artist, I'm thinking about this like a portfolio. If i'm working there, I want a lot of games under my belt so when I leave, I want different things to draw to then add to that portfolio variety and I don't think I care if they tell me new IP or Days Gone 2, I have fucking mortgage and a family Peter lol MOST are not leaving based on this as that just sounds a bit exaggerative. Maybe its because I work independently and not for any company, but I can understand that one can have a passive, but they still need to pay the bills. I just don't see me telling my wife we need to move, sell the house, move the kids out of their school cause no Days Gone 2, not even forever, simply not as the next game.

Until we get some solid, factual figure on that, I have some doubts that most of the original team are no longer there, like...massive doubts.

, most people who didn't work on the original game wouldn't want to work a sequel so they go with the new IP.

They just spent close to 7 years working on that IP, I'm sure they also want a breather on something different for a bit, so there is an argument to say a lot of the team wants the new IP and simply cycle it to have some variety.

My guess is that they would have green lit the game especially if the rumors of a movie are true.

I'm sure they would have, its a safer bet to put out a sequel with something established vs a new IP that is more costly.

I simply see this as, if the team wanted to move on and revisit it at a later date, maybe its better we get the Days Gone 2 they want to make by choice later vs Days Gone 2 rushed by force.

I think there was just a lot of negative energy surrounding Days Gone at Bend. It had a lot of development issues and it was mostly written by John Garvin who was not getting along with the rest of the studio and eventually got fired. I dont think Jeff ross was well liked either, it makes sense to me that the studio took a vote and decided they wanted to do something else. Seems liek the studio set up before was a bit totalitarian

Sony normally approves games to be a trilogy and a franchise. Rarely do companies do one game and then move on to a new IP. In my mind, outside of the technical issues, there wasn't much wrong with Days Gone (at least not for me) and could have had an amazing sequel.

In general, we'll just have to agree to disagree since im heavily favored towards Days Gone and was really hyped for the sequel especially since the original game ends on a cliffhanger.

Nah, I don't think that is a hard rule, ironclad, 100% thing.

Put this way....Sony normally oks sequels of games that did well, where the team wants to continue the series. So I think all that of is factored into the game being successful and the team having ideas or something.

Rarely do companies do one game and then move on to a new IP

yea and look at all the shit sequels because of it looking to rush to make a buck off of the last game? DMC2, Bioshock 2, etc just cause they can, doesn't mean they should and it might be rare, but maybe thats because Sony offer's a level of freedom to their developers that isn't the norm in the first place.

there wasn't much wrong with Days Gone

lol nahhhhh that design was just horrible, on top of so many bugs, glitches and the weird frame rate issues. The game starts to drag near the middle and becomes this repetitive mess. A sequel can fix sooooooo much of this.

Allow the player to set up a camp.
Board windows.
Hunt for food.
Vehicle variety.
ENEMY variety and so much more.

I don't hate the game, but I can't pretend it was some perfect game start to finish. This imho simply isn't some STRAIGHT to sequel IP, they need time to focus on correcting a whole lot before revisiting it and maybe a new IP in between is what is need now to even ensure this fucking IP has a future.

If they did a sequel right off the bat and started developing, if they take on those same ideas vs taking that time out in-between another title and it flops, it won't be a "see you next time" type thing, it will be Sony closing that team or something. So maybe they need that breathing room to fix all that and design something better.

could have had an amazing sequel.

Who is to say it can't? To my understanding, this new IP being made doesn't mean no Days Gone 2, likely just means what ever Days Gone 2 was that they were planning prior to this.

In general, we'll just have to agree to disagree since im heavily favored towards Days Gone

I don't hate Days Gone, I'm not saying no to a sequel.

Simply not right now. Let them learn from that new IP and come back to Days Gone 2 where it can be waaaaay better then what it would have been originally. They can only get better with time.

(Watch several generations go by and that new IP becomes some monster hit and Days Gone is this classic that was forgotten like The Getaway and I'm apologizing to you) lol I didn't know Peter DAMN!!!!!

Man, these Sony shows and movies really need to be AAA so as not to backfire smearing the franchises. Last of Us is in good hands with the production pedigree, but everything needs to be.

Well as long as they're quality and have good enough production values, is what should matter the most. I don't think these shows in particular need to have insane budgets, especially if some are going to have a lot of episodes.

I just think that Bend management should have sent it up the chain of command and let Sony decide which they do for every game anyway. Sony either greenlights the game or they say no. My guess is that they would have green lit the game especially if the rumors of a movie are true.

They could be doing a movie to test out story concepts in helping make the zombies stuff more unique from a narrative POV, before then spinning that back out into a new game. Because if they do it right, even a high-production film would cost less than a AAA Days Gone sequel. They're not going to need MCU budgets, most horror films don't.

and yeah, i was right about Garvins reaction to the movie lol

Dang he's kind of a sourpants about all this huh? I can understand his feelings some, when you're the creator of something and spent so much time and energy to see it through.

But he didn't develop the game by himself, either. Just no way a single person ever could for these AAA blockbuster games. It's a team effort.

This is Sam Heughan, who would play Deacon. Nice to see he isn't a non-binary black lesbian and dying his hair he could look like pretty similar to Deacon, no woke tokenism this time:

Meh. It was one of the only 1st party games I couldn’t finish. Just not on the level as the others.

I find it weird that it sold more than Bloodborne. It’s a travesty lol

Unfuckingbelievable!!!

Sony green lights a movie to a dead franchise but I can't get what was my most anticipated sequel coming into the PS5 generation??? Fucking bullshit right there. UGH.

I doubt they could have every one of there AAA studios making a sequel.

Suckerpunch = Ghost of Tsushima Sequel
Insomniac = Spiderman sequel
Guerilla = Horizon 2
Santa Monica = God of War Ragnarok
Naughty Dog = Was working on TLOU2

They need some new IP’a and I doubt they skip over GOT 2, Spiderman 2, Horizon 2 over Days Gone sequel

I didn't see anything wrong on its game design. Some things could have been tweaked or improved (like in any game) but I didn't see anything wrong.

Everything was well enough designed and even added some good new ideas that matched very well with the concept of the game.

Which part(s) of its game design you think are "horrible" and why?

Put this way....Sony normally oks sequels of games that did well, where the team wants to continue the series. So I think all that of is factored into the game being successful and the team having ideas or something.
As a company if a new IP sells well the sequels are welcomed. And you don't see a new IP selling 9 millions (and counting) every day. Sony would be more than happy to make a sequel.

The thing is, Sony doesn't force their teams to do a particular project. In this case after Days Gone the heads of Bend decided not to pitch a Days Gone sequel but instead to pitch a new IP to Sony and they greenlighted it. Who knows, maybe Bend decides to make Days Gone 2 as their next project or somewhere else in the future (which I'm pretty sure Sony would greenlight it), or maybe some other studio like Bluepoint is already making or starts make Days Gone 2 soonish.

When DG was released and Bend started to think their next game, Sony already was working on Astro, Gran Turismo, Ratchet, God of War, Spider-Man sequels, multiple Horizon and TLOU stuff, Uncharted and Demon's Souls remasters/remakes, while in the 3rd party stuff was also funding many exclusives that are sequels. A ton of sequels. So maybe Bend decided it was better to leave the sequel for later and make now a new IP.

While I agree that new IP's are important and whatnot, for me personally, there's a 50/50 chance that I have zero interest in the new IP where as with sequels from last gen's new IP's Horizon, Tsushima and Days Gone is a guaranteed day one purchase for me. Hehehe.

Completely unnecessary. It sucks that these movies seem to just be cheap copies of the original material instead of being something that actually adds to the game, it makes no sense to me because the games themselves are already inspired by movies.

Square was in the right track with how they handled that FFXV movie, that's the sort of stuff that I'd like to see and with modern technology it would be extremely easy to transpose live action characters to future games, creating a consistent multi media experience.

The entire vision Sony seems to have for their PlayStation movies/series sucks and is going to inevitable associate their brand to low quality entertainment.

Who are they even trying to appeal to? Why would someone who played Uncharted/TLoU/GoT want to see a movie that tells the same story? Why would someone who hasn't played those games that the story comes from a game?

The movies aren’t really for gamers, they are for casuals or people who haven’t played the games.

Things that exist as big media franchises are always going to inevitably sell better cause people will pick it up on brand recognition alone. Thats why licensed IPs sell so well, stuff like sports games, superhero games, etc.

Look at pokemon, its a media phenomenon thats why the games will always sell despite their quality. The kids growing up are watching the cartoons, buying the merchandise, seeing them at theme parks, etc. it makes sure theres always a new batch of people buying the game when the older demo ages out

Because they’re doing a one hand washes the other strategy. They already have popular IP for games to tap into that will increase revenue in both divisions.

They need to start doing the same with their music division, let me hear some Travis Scott in games.

9 million is pretty impressive for a new IP, where the journalists took out points just because Deacon had his cap back to front "or the wife wanted to *uck her husband. If this was MS there would be a sequel in the works, they would be saying this was a super successful game with only 2 million sold.
