Developer says Sony's PSSR Could Be More Important Than Direct Increase in GPU Power

The PlayStation 5 Pro is only nine days away, and the price notwithstanding, some of its features carry significant potential for upcoming titles. These include Dying Light: The Beast, a standalone follow-up to the first game featuring the return of Kyle Crane. Techland’s Tymon Smektała is keen on the console’s GPU and how it offers “a lot more flexibility with graphics in performance.”

In a recent interview with GamingBolt, the series’ franchise director said, “We’re just starting to discover the full capabilities of PS5 Pro, but it’s already exciting as it gives us a lot more flexibility with graphics and performance. The boost in GPU will allow us to push visual fidelity, especially with complex environmental details like weather effects, which are very core to Dying Light: The Beast’s experience.

“This kind of power also means generally smoother gameplay at higher resolutions, and that’s something very important for a game like ours, where the highest level of immersion is of utmost importance.”

However, he feels that PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) could be “even more important” in the long run. The proprietary AI upscaling solution is a major factor in hitting 4K (and, in some cases, 8K) resolution for titles at 60 frames per second.

As Smektala notes, “Sony’s PSSR is a substantial push for the supersampling tech that other companies are experimenting with. It’s a great initiative as, in the future, this can allow developers to focus slightly less on performance and have bigger creative liberty. If what Sony is proposing will become a new standard, then PSSR could potentially turn out to be even more important than the direct increase in GPU power that the console delivers.”

Magic software is more important than GPU power?

But there's no way, none at all as I am assured by others, that the switch 2 could possibly compete with graphics from PS4 and Xbone, let alone anything else. No way at all.

Joking aside, this technology has interesting potential and just like SLI, has the chance of boxing manufactures like Nvidia and Sony into a corner.

You know with more GPU power PSSR will delivery better quality.

GPU power increase will always be more important including to use PSSR.

So he is just taking nonsense or trying to do a silly PR (mostly this).

Another gamer who doesn't inherently understand things.

As PSSR improves over time, it will allow you to render at a lower resolution with less sacrifices as well as increased framerates.

We're already reaching diminishing returns on native 4K resolution and increased silicon in GPUs.

Another developer put it best; You can buy a PC for 2-3x more than the PS5 Pro, but you're not going to get 2-3x better graphics/performance.

This will become more and more true as time advances. That doesn't mean GPUs won't get more powerful as you still need them to be for machine learning, but how that is utilized vs how it is utilized today are not the same.

The lack of critical thinking and understanding in gaming today is astounding.

That is still way less important than increase in GPU power.

BTW increasing GPU power makes PSSR better too… it makes everything better.

That weird example the dev and you said here just prove it… if a PC with 2-3x GPU power uses something he similar to PSSR it will delivery 2-3x what PS5 Pro can 🤷🏻‍♂️

PC after all can use PSSR like technologies too… the different is the increase in GPU, CPU, memory, storage, etc.

Increase in raw still is the most important thing…

Plus more heavier these machine learning algorithms become more increase in GPU raw power will be needed 🤷🏻‍♂️
Increase is GPU power is need to advance the software used.

And people loves to talk about AI but you know why nVidia is winning the AI market? Because more GPU processing power = better AI.

Everybody believes nVidia will delivery better and better AI because they can push GPU power for that… you know nVidia just reached Apple level in Big Tech with that.

Too bad they undermined their own technology with everything on PC with DLSS. The difference will be so minimal making it useless for most people 🤷
