Does no one find it concerning that PS5 sales are struggling to keep up with the nearly 8 year old Nintendo Switch?

Will the Switch outsell the PS5 this holiday season?

It is NOT a Home console and no Japanese is buying it for that either.

That is why it exists cause Nintendo know Home consoles are dead in Japan.

Are you that dense?
Well you have a strong belief in what you're saying so I think that you should go here
and argue with the Wikipedia editors that the Switch doesn't belong there. If you can do it I'll change my mind.

Your Mom
Mobiles and calculators etc. are home console too 😂
What about the new vibrators? Are they mobile when you take them to the hotel, but consoles when you use them at home? But what about if you are home with one, but your SO is traveling and uses an app to control it?

There is a fine line. Let's not cross it.

I actually don’t compare the two at all.

I don’t know a single person who has a Switch and no other gaming platform. I’d guess a lot of those types would be children.

Probably.

The only person i know who only has a Switch is my 6 year old niece. It's mostly children and super casuals who are only interested in Mario or Animal Crossing.

You are comparing an apple to an orange.

The home console market is pretty much dead in Japan for the past 2 decades.

Mobile and handhelds rule. Reason why the glorified handheld Switch is doing great.

It is not only Playstation. Even Nintendo home consoles didn’t do great this century.

Console sales in Japan. The PS5 is doing as expected.

Not in software sales though, and that's what really matters. It's the reason why console market share in Japan is stagnating while PC has tripled in the span of a few years. PS5 is simply not generating persistent, sustainable software sales in Japan.

You get a small handful of weeks throughout the whole year where there's a PS5 game charting in the Top 10 or Top 5, or even a few managing to do so. But then many of them drop off the Top 10 and drown into the bottom 30 or so just a week or two later. The digital ratio in Japan is lower than other major markets, so there's little chance these games are moving big digital numbers to make up for the gen-over-gen drop of physical copies sold.

What I'm describing isn't a one-off: it's been a recurring problem for PS5 software in Japan for years now, and it doesn't seem to be getting much any better. Where TF is Astro Bot on the physical charts? That is the sort of game which should be in at least the bottom of the Top 10 for a good number of weeks after release. Instead it vanished after a couple, and hasn't come back. One time I checked, and it wasn't even in the Top 30. Maybe it's an outlier and digital is a huge majority of its sales, but without confirmation that's just hopium.

I'd also argue that hardware-wise, given the pent-up demand during the pandemic & lockdowns, we would've expected PS5 to have a peak year later than the PS4, but maybe some of that demand died out the longer supply shortage persisted. Not really the point of my comment here, though, so it's whatever.

Well that comes with the territory.

Lack of hardware sales equals lack of Software sales.

Other than the Gran Turismo series, what big seller has Sony ever had in Japan?

Even during the PS1 and PS2 days could you name me another PS franchise which sold great?

Reason why Japan Studio no longer exists.

People think Japan Studios closure has led to this. It’s the opposite.

Japan studio was closed cause they sold shite in Japan.

Astro Bot sales in Japan prove that.

Nothing you just said makes sense. For one I wasn't just focusing on 1P; I also included 3P. And, relative to budgets, SIE have had a lot of good to great successes in the Japanese software market with previous consoles. Arc the Lad, Parappa, and the Boku no Natsuyasumi games are some examples of that. Then we get to 3P, where games in IP like FF and Dragon Quest were selling more on older PS consoles, even ones like PS3, than they are today on PS5. But if you want to wall off "great" as games that only sell 8-10 million or more copies, then of course you're going to rule out a lot of otherwise viable releases from SIE and 3P in the region on older PS consoles, regardless of if the profit margins were better due to lower budgets.

Japan Studio was partly closed down because SIE just did not market their games well enough, and chose bad times to release them in. They also wanted to have more funding for mega-IP like Spiderman and GOW and Horizon, so they cut back on smaller studios and games to redirect their money to the other studios. Japan Studio fell victim to that strategy. So their closure isn't as simple or clear-cut as you want to make it out to be. Their games weren't massive sellers, but they helped bring identity to PlayStation as a platform and served a niche who were otherwise not interested in the mega AAA games.

Now Sony have more or less given up catering to a lot of smaller niches who collectively added to PlayStation both in identity and total hardware sales, and have been increasingly zeroing in on just the biggest mainstream AAA IP and genre types, in part because of increasing budgets demanding it and also because Sony have deemed that the better strategy for them. Clearly, I don't 100% agree with that decision, but I'm not the one calling the shots.

To put what you said simply, you think you know better than Sony and blame them.

Sony is a business not a charity. Japan studios were closed for good reason.

Surprised no one mentions the Last Guardian Debacle where the producer was literally wanted to jump ship mid development.

We literally waited 2 generations for it.

What have the remnants of Japan studios got to show after leaving Sony?

Slitterhead?

About 3P games, other than Monster Hunter what 3P game sells like hotcakes in Japan?

Not sure why Sony is being blamed for 3P sales.

Do 3P games like great on Switch in Japan?

The one they made purchasing the console
Perhaps I misunderstood the context, as I thought the user you were responding to was a PC gamer, based on previous comments I've read from them. Thus, I thought it odd, given they would neither have a PlayStation, nor own any Sony shares.

I also might have a slightly different personal interpretation of "investment," but that's neither here nor there. :)

You can play Switch like a home console. Nintendo calls it a console just like Sony does w PS.

Maybe hybrid, maybe handheld, but it’s very much a gaming console.

We called the PSvita a console just like Sony.

Either way, whether it is or not Nintendo is positioned the best & ready to take market share away from Xbox & PS easily by there competitors reckless & short term/short vision actions

Wikipedia is your source?

Go get some sleep.

Is the Steamdeck a home console when docked?
What defines a console? Because Steamdeck & PS/Switch have 99% the same feature.

Are they a evolution, could argue adding more features to a console would make it “PC like”
