what.
It's 0 reason. Playing 2d image on a flat screen in void does not consume as much resources as you think
Do you realize that the image of the rendered virtual screen will have to be displayed on a 2000 x 2040 screen and won't even take up all those pixels right?

Duh.

PSVR $399*
PS4 Pro $399
PS4 $299

PSVR2 $499
PS5 $499
PS5 DE $399

*And PSVR really cost even more.
It was $399 for just the headset:
+ $59 camera (required)
+ $99 Move controllers (basically required)
= $560 launch price for PSVR

Now imagine going from $560 to just $500 with far better specs, not to mention a parts shortage and inflation. Meanwhile, the PS5 rose in price by $100 compared to PS4. I can’t see it being below $499 at launch since the controllers are included. Maybe a $399 option for just the headset later on, with $99 controllers optional. But I can’t even see how that would work.
Sony isn't alone in the market, the Oculus Quest exists and setting the price too high is the perfect way too kill the PSVR2.

Should edit this since VR games don't have a "cinematic mode", maybe you just meant the headset?
The idea of the cinematic mode is that inside VR you are in a theater and what you see in that theater/giant virtual screen is basically any PS5 non VR content like games or movies.

The virtual scene you see in your headset display is in 4000x2040, but the video (PS5 non VR feed) projected in that virtual theater display will be in 1080p. I a theater you are meters away from the screen, so I assume that since the detail with the distance gets lost you pretty likely you won't notice the difference.

On top of that, rendering it at 1080p means there's console horsepower left that can be used to build that virtual cinema scene and handle VR controls etc. while running any top tier PS5 game.

Not sure why you just responded like this; was just pointing out that "VR Games" don't have anything to do with cinematics mode.

It's really misleading because it sounds like VR games also have a flat/2d representation.

I replied to offer a more detailed explanation

It's 4000x2040
Each screen has to render the same screen at slightly different positions, so the actual screen is going to take up only a portion of each screen.

I don't know, Sony probably has a reason to be doing it this way given that if it was better and easy to render at the same resolution as non-VR more they would have no reason not to do it.

downsampling
Downsampling what exactly? The final image or the image that goes into the virtual screen?

My PSVR is a great add-on. I personally will be buying this and a PS5 Pro (whenever it happens) day 1.

Quest is $399 / $499 now. Valve Index is $1000.

Quest specs are shit compared to PSVR2. Not to mention the games.

Sony will be fine.

Reality. Do you even know what the Oculus Quest is?

It has a SoC, GPU, memory, storage, Wi-Fi, etc. The PSVR2 won't need to have any of that.
Duh it’s a cheap smartphone spec. It’s not that much extra cost.

Quest’s build cost is lower in other key areas - display, sensors, controllers. The actual new tech that’s pricey.

PSVR was $560 in 2016, with old cheaper PS Move tech and no supply chain issues.

Now, dramatically advance the tech in all aspects, factor in the chip shortage & inflation.

If Sony want to sell PSVR2 for a profit, like they did with PSVR1, I doubt it will be under $500.
