God of War Ragnarok has done the impossible. It’s arrived and matched the astronomically high scores of God of War 2018, a 94 on Metacritic, rarified air in the video game space, where only a few series have ever reached.

Microsoft’s Xbox, which excelling in the subscription value space with Xbox Game Pass, still has yet to not just match this, but really even start attempting to match this. They went an entire generation without many meaningful exclusive titles, and I’d argue none on the level of Sony’s offerings. The best exclusives for Xbox across two generations now have been Forza titles, and those are heavily reliant on players liking the racing genre in the first place.

Microsoft clearly recognized this was a problem, and starting buying up studios left and right in order to produce hits like Sony. This is not a dunk, Microsoft has literally stated many, many times that they know this is a shortcoming with Xbox, and they are taking steps to correct that.

The problem is that this is…not going very well so far.

Is he expecting or hoping Xbox to catch up? Crazy.

And to be fair what is impossible about Ragnarok matching GoW scores?

Is the article posters so low minded?

Thy will never catch up no matter who they buy. Sony just has too many in house powerhouse studios.

If GoW was considered as "raising the bar" you can't just do the same thing and expect to get the same kind of critical reception.

The reason most people thought it wouldn't hit the same scores is that doing more of the same, generally speaking, does not have the same impact as something that is new and fresh, and therefore it won't score as high.

Pretty straightforward.

My expectation's when it comes to Xbox first party is very low now. I'd hope that the Perfect Dark remake would be there entry into top tier quality like TLOU or GOW.
Dont think its going to ever happen,

Personally, my expectations for Microsoft's first party is higher than most as I expect them to give me a generation that surpasses the previous three combined when all is said and done. I also expect them to do this generation what I got from Sony last generation. Going into PS4, the only studio that was of any interest to me was Naughty Dog. With PS4 by 2016, that started to change. I became an Insomniac fan, a Guerrilla fan, a Sucker Punch fan and became a Santa Monica fan again. Also became a Bend fan.

This is how I see this generation being for me with Xbox. Never cared about 343 Industries or Halo but Infinite campaign won me over. Currently my #1 game of this generation and while GOWR will most likely knock it down to #2, to be #1 for me for a year already blows away what they gave me since Gears of War 2. I look at Obsidian who I have never really been interested in but they have the opportunity to win me over with Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2. And im still waiting for Take Two Interactive to announce the current generation version of The Outer Worlds so I can play it. InXile who like Obsidian have a history of great games were just never for me but now, they could be. Rumors of a first person steampunk action RPG sounds good to me and while I have to see it, I am excited for the idea of it.

Playground who in my opinion develop and release the best racing (arcade or simulation) franchise out there and do it at a level that surpasses all others in an open world is bringing back Fable which I have never played and now with Eidos as a support studio, oh man, they won me over with FH 3 years ago so I know of their high quality but now, with a new studio/team and Forza Tech behind it, oh man, this could be the best fantasy action RPG since The Witcher 3. Ninja Theory who I have been a fan of since since Enslaved in 2010 already has my confidence and while I wasn't the biggest fan of Hellblade, what they did considering the budget was very impressive and better than a lot of AAA games from last generation. This will be a visual showcase and as long as they made the combat deeper, I will be very happy.

Next up is Undead Labs who won me over with State of Decay but lost me with the sequel has a chance to win me back and after hearing Booty say that they want it to be a massive step up visually and in regards to animations, oh hell yeah!!! Just give me a solid story and more fluid combat/gameplay and im good. Compulsion Games who has been shit for their entire existence now has an opportunity to step up their game and with them being rumored to working on a third person single player story driven game, im very interested but still have to see it. But at least im interested where I never was before.

And of course, The Coalition who are one of my favorites have a new IP and eventually Gears 6. Can't wait to see what they pull off in Unreal Engine 5. Then we have Bethesda and their respective studios and eventually ABK.

I wouldn't have switched to Xbox Series X as my primary gaming console if I wasn't hyped, excited and also very confident in what they're doing. Two years in, definitely underwhelming and disappointing but like with Microsoft finally spending money to make Xbox bigger and better, it's just a matter of time until their games start hitting and when they do, it won't be stopping. 2023 on paper looks excellent and as an Xbox fan, im definitely looking forward to next year and beyond!!! 😂

Only thing I'm looking forward to from MS is Avowed, and it's been almost radio silence since it was first unveiled.

Fable in 2026, and Elder Scrolls in 2028 really ain't gonna cut it.

If Sony can keep putting out games like H:FW, GT7, Ragnorak, Spiderman 2, Factions 2 etc they will stay far ahead. Their game development is not only superior, it's also more efficient and much better managed.

I agreed, but its not a certainty. If MS open their wallet they can yank some of SIE best talent. SIE have lost talent before.
PS is in the position its in today because of its talent or human capital, they can be poached.

Not to burst your bubble but we are now in year three of this gen. It’ll probably be around a six-seven year generation as is typical, meaning we are already going to be hitting the halfway point in a year or so.

It’s freaking over for Xbox this gen already. You just can’t give up that much time and distance for years, and expect to have a real impact. Yeah they can still release a couple of good games, but Sony and Nintendo aren’t going to slow down or stop doing their thing, and MS is coming across like they have no direction and no real clue what to do. Of course they are constantly hearing their customers “loud and clear.” What’s that done for any of us so far?

So many of xbox studios games have been notably riddled with issues and false starts on their projects it’s kind of hard to believe their games will set the bar on release.

I hope the games are good because it will be nice to have competition but i dont think a lot of those studios were ever GREAT studios to begin with. Inxile makes good games, not great games, the best thing obsidian has made was New Vegas, compulsion sucks, double fine has always been a fine AA developer, 343 sucks, coalition has potential, ninja theory outside of graphics has always been lackluster even when they were exclusively making sony games…etc

Idk for me, microsoft don’t really get the benefit of the doubt as far as software goes. I loved the 360 but they’ve fallen long and far behind since then. It’s like they put out a wii-u type system and came back weak as hell to follow it up. Two years into a new console launch and they still haven’t produced anything noteworthy other than another forza game.

Where as nintendo came back with BoTW, Splatoon 2, Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade, etc. the first year

When I played GoW 2018 I loved it and thought that if Santa Monica increased scale and variety it should be one of the best games ever created.

That means better than GoW 2018. These two points alone are huge upgrades over the original.

More of the same is great when the formula is great… just look at Zelda’s, Marios, GTAs, etc… more of the same is only bad when that same is already bad it have imperfections that didn’t have a good evolution.
