Apologies but I don't get this argument. We have Lara Croft, Ellie, Abby, Jill Valentine, Aloy... I don't think a characters sex is of any detriment to a game being successful, and hasn't been so for quite a while.

There definitely has been progress! But I don't think you can honestly say that it's not still an issue! 🙀 Especially if we talk about females of color, to who I was referring to.

The industry is still full of baggage from the past. You can't deny that, outside of few exceptions, the history of videogame main characters has been very clearly white male dominated. From Solid Snake, over Mario and Link, Doom marine, to every generic shooter protagonist, it was basically the default. Not many black main characters in the most successful Nintendo games to this date, for example. No matter if male or female. History has a big influence on our current state!

Females like Samus only worked because it was so rare to have a female hero, but of course had to be white. Lara Croft was only popular because of pretty disgusting sexism - which the reboot tried to fix, but the publisher was disappointed by the sales numbers. We had very few female leads, and if any, then the white ones were dominating.

Having female leads of color is a very recent achievement and still rare in big budget games. When you then look at the reactions from many gamers, especially compared to white male protagonists, it's horrible tbh!!!

Online, the difference in feedback and reactions speaks volumes. Take Forspoken. I saw many negative reactions, like complaining about the game being woke - I guess because she has darker skin and is a female? - the protagonist being annoying, her talking too much - to the point that the devs even changed her:

Online males complaining about a woman of color talking too much, yes, that's where we're still at. Imagine! 😿
I've heard that complain often about female leads, like in Forspoken or Gears 5 for example. Now compare it to Nathan Drake or any white male protagonist who has many spoken lines. Did ND have to change Nathan Drake because the audience complained that he talks too much? Too quippy?

I can't show you hard numbers as evidence that it has an impact on sales. But there are many right wing 4Chan type toxic males in the videogame audience, who are annoyed by females of color as leads in games, complaining about "woke-ism".

I would say that we are on the right track, but there's a lot more work to do, to change people's minds! I am convinced that we'll get there one day, though! 😊

How is it an issue? Here's a list of games with non-white skin colours (more on the skin colour conundrum below):

NieR Automata, Octopath Traveler, Persona 5, Uncharted Lost Legacy, Telltale's The Walking Dead, Assassin Creed Liberation. There's more, not an exhaustive list.

I get that history has a big influence in our present, and I think that's a solid argument however, I do have to call you out on something: It seems to me pretty non-inclusive to consider all those characters "white". Why do I say this? Easy. I'm Portuguese, and white. A Swedish guy is also white. Our nations don't look remotely the same, our people don't look alike, we tan and they (generally) don't. I can be pretty dark during summer and pretty white during the winter. This categorisation of people into skin colour buckets makes my skin crumble, as well as assuming that being diverse is being of a different skin colour.

Cannot disagree here, except with the skin colour overtones.

Would you consider a Japanese female lead to be of colour?

Because they may feel she talks too much? Why are you assuming her skin colour has anything to do with it? You're heading a dangerous path where any criticism towards someone you consider "of colour" is suddenly a demonstration of that person being biased. I for one hated Atreus in GOW because he doesn't shut up. Am I biased against the Nordics?

One problem: You're paying too much attention to 4Chan incels that have nothing better than to criticise women because they themselves are repugnant.

Final thoughts: I fully agree that we need better representation in games and other types of entertainment, and that gaming is an insanely toxic place, especially because it seems like incels like to be gamers. Regardless, I am very much contesting your focus on "white" skin colour, like if every single white person was the same. Skin colour does not define one person, their beliefs, their cultural heritage, nothing. Categorizing skin colours like this monolythic thing is the same as saying "all asians look the same" (I'm using this as a demonstrative).

Where are you actually reading this from?

The darker skin and being a female bit.

I recall the thread on Gaf but i don't recall color ever being mentioned or the fact that she was a woman, the only thing i recall was her constant annoying use of quips that were driving people up the wall.

What dark place in the universe are you visiting to see these reactions, i am genuinely curious.

off topic but this makes me wonder if Final Fantasy XVI will really make summer 2023 or be delayed to January 2024?

99% chance this is bait!
this game seems pretty much universally reviled by anyone who lays eyes on it, and the constant delays are proof enough that even the developers have no faith in it. they have the pre-order numbers, which i'm assuming are very low, they know this game is doomed. now it's all about damage mitigation and trying to recoup whatever they can by strategically moving the date... which they've done twice, or 3 times now?

This game looks like some weird mishmash of game design that just doesn't resonate with any audience in particular. Awful main character, awful cringey, dopey dialogue, and it's all wrapped into the worst parts of FFXV (a game most people didn't like) with a bland open world and checklist design.

This is going to be one of S-E's biggest duds of all time, is my guess. Sure I could be wrong, but it's clear the game is in a sorry state right now. as a traditonal S-E fan I have no interest. It doesn't look or feel like a S-E game.

Meh, speak for yourself. I think it looks dope and outside of final fantasy one of the more interesting new games coming out of square enix, its the only one even trying to do something new.

I’d probably have more fun running and jumping around in this world than any other open world game release in recent times where you’re just on the same old horse.

I dunno about reviled....

These days any exclusive for PlayStation that gets any criticism at all is magnified by over ten times by media and influencers etc.

Much like Death Stranding..... a certain segment claiming to be 'multiplatform gamers' said it looked boring and was a UPS simulator and a walking simulator and the criticism never ended.... until suddenly it was released on PC and a lot of the criticism disappeared.

I wouldn't take a lot of this online reaction seriously.

What will matter is the day 1 quality and the reviews...if the reviews are above 80 people will more than likely support it on PS.

That is just my take on the situation. I played FFXV Royal Edition, and it was pretty decent but I did hear the original release was rough.

It's just a feeling of how Final Fantasy 15 got delayed from September to November 29th 2016 when I think they already announced the season pass for the game and the fact they only said Summer 2023 just gives me those vibes, I can be completely wrong tho.

I guess im cool it either way, I already know FF16 is gonna be a banger. If it gets delayed it will probably only be a couple of weeks or months like FXIV. These games according to imran khan was always supposed to release pretty close together.

So you are actually capable of using words to articulate your points! Took you long enough! Can I expect more posts like this from you in the future? Or is this just a one off? 🤔 Time will tell I guess 🤷
