Zero chance this disc drive works on the PS6, but maybe that's not what you meant.

Sony could easily have used a USB-C disc drive but I think they chose this form factor to force you to buy a drive every generation.

Agree.

Not what I meant.

It will use the same tech/concept.

People don’t realise that Sony still has a stake in physical media cause of Blu Ray.

This just reinforces it. Signed this year.

It's possible that Sony sees an avenue where they're one of the only 4K bluray players left on the market, but I'm not certain that the enthusiast market is large enough to make a difference here.

I personally own a UB-820 and hope it never dies out given how much I spent on it (its value has actually increased) and I don't plan on buying a disc drive for the PS5 Pro, since I've used my disc drive a total of 0 times in the last 4 years on my PS5. For all I know it doesn't even work.

Weird cause PC is almost totally digital. Even the disc games were single use last time I checked if they even exist now.

You are literally jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire.

Physical will remain an option on PlayStation even in the next generation.

That’s why they created the detachable disc drive.

It wasn’t cheap to create and not for half a generation either.
I swear, it’s like people don’t read. I said if next gen is PURE DIGITAL. In that case there is literally no change jumping to pc in this regard, and no frying pan to fire if they are the same.

Yeah, for a multitude of reasons, similar to why I don't generally buy tv series on 4K bluray unless they're a miniseries or something.

Jumping between games and tv shows is tedious on individual discs. TV shows rarely have better quality on disc than streaming and games don't have any improved quality on disc over digital.

There will come a time where the next system doesn't use discs at all but may still honor digital downloads. I don't want to be on the wrong side of that. It would be different if all physical games worked on all physical drives, but they're console-specific.

You can get physical games cheaper than digital, but I see that as the cost to potentially being able to play these games in the future and more conveniently. I don't have to store games that are hardly utilized or potentially transport them.

There aren't enough benefits to physical games to make such a fuss over them.
You’re missing the single biggest point of Physical. The license is tied to the disc, not an account.

You own the license in its purest sense, and it’s transferable no different to anything else you physically own - no restrictions or questions asked.

There are entire economies of collectors selling and trading retro physical gaming products. None of this exists with your psn purchse and a completely seperate discussion.

You want ultimate convenience? Get an Amazon Firestick and stream Xbox gamepass.

I don't need to transfer licenses. I can't remember the last time I traded a game in. It must have been during the PS3 generation. There's no real value in that. Pennies on the dollar.

There's not much value in retro gaming if PlayStation continues with BC via digital. If anything retro gaming has always largely been a scam. The scarcity of games via cart or disc resulted in people not being able to enjoy games due to their outrageous prices.

Latency isn't convenient.

The value to you is not universal. But on that, those pennies in the dollar allow kids, students and many not well off to enjoy this hobby like the rest of us. The only point is - it’s yours to do with as you please.

Retro gaming is broader than ps and it has nothing to do with access to the game which is guaranteed to be piratable and emulated anyway. Ironically it reenforces the spirit of value placed on physical things and the enthusiasm and nostalgia for human creation that goes well beyond gaming.

Latency is a technical shortcoming, not a convenience shortcoming. Shit things can be more convenient and great things less so.

They aren’t the same and won’t be next generation either.

You're so upset by a digital console that you would jump to a digital PC, only to then stream said games with an extremely increased latency over playing on console.. and you think the real benefit here is games you probably don't even play often or could run off a raspberry pi for less than 100 dollars...

And let's remind ourselves that we got here because of digital...
Digital on pc steam gives you access to your files. You can mod, crack , copy and do whatever. Key sites fight over pricing.

Nothing like that on digital console. You are forced to psn alone. No control over your purchase at all. Unless you buy disc. You can play 1.0 if you want, play offline and retailers are competitive with pricing.

digital on console and pc is entirely different thing.

Always an excuse ready. I hope the shilling is well paid.

Why is it 80 in the US (taxes not included)? California with the highest sales tax in the US, brings that to 88 dollars.

Why is it 110 USD in Europe (taxes included)?

Why is it 129 USD in the UK (taxes included)?

Why is it 130 USD in Japan (taxes included)?

Maybe you're just a troll?

Why is the PS5 everywhere outside of the USA more expensive? Why are games 80€ in Europe?

Taxes, legal and regulatory fees, import and transport costs, server costs, localization costs... It all adds up.

You can ignore these things, but you just look childish for doing so.

Import costs for digital games 😂😂😂😂

So localization costs are added to Europe, even though some of the games are made here? Does Horizon cost more in the US than Spider-Man? 🤔

I might look childish, still better than looking like a dumb shill.

Your first question was why the PS5 itself is more expensive.

If a game is made in Europe, that doesn't mean the cost of localizing it and marketing it in different languages doesn't contribute to the cost... Horizon is made in the Netherlands, but you're going to pay a premium for Dutch localization. It's a smaller market.

You have your head in the sand and you definitely look childish. Wild that presumably a grown ass man doesn't know how the world works...
