Hideo Kojima says he turned down offers to make a big-budget Death Stranding movie in favour of A24

Kojima and Civil director Alex Garland recently had a discussion with Famitsu (as spotted by Automaton), and the topic of the upcoming Death Stranding movie was brought up. It was announced last December that Kojima was working with A24 – the film distribution and production company behind movies like Everything Everywhere All At Once, Talk to Me, Uncut Gems, Midsommar, Lady Bird and Moonlight – to make a live-action Death Stranding film.

Kojima told Famitsu that he chose to work with A24 because he didn’t want to make an expensive blockbuster action movie.

“I have no intention of directing it myself, so I am involved with the producer in terms of the plot, etc,”

Honestly this is great to hear. If a studio tried to make it a big budget blockbuster they'd wind up turning it into a really lame action movie (see 90% of video game film adaptations). Avoiding the video game movie curse to make an arthouse film ensures the movie will hold onto what makes Death Stranding's tone, plot, and world interesting.

A24 makes a lot of peak, both in film and television

kojima knows what is up, if im not mistaken a while ago the talks about this movie was about how it would be more intimate instead of just a holywood action one, with new characters and all, but at the same time kojima also said that there are multiple projects happening, so who knows
