ShiftUp had become pretty expensive after the success of Stellar Blade. They have currently a market cap of 2-3B Dollar. That's nearly as much as Kadokawa. Not worth it, staying partners is probably cheaper if Sony just publishes their games. Imo if Sony should look for Korean companies then I would believe one of those: NeoWiz, Pearl Abyss or NCSoft. All make great games and would be vastly cheaper in comparison to ShiftUp.
2-3 billion. Jeez.
Yeah theres alot more cheaper studios to get

Yeah, probably. Square has nice IP but its all very dated and full of strings and caveats, plus people seem less into it these days. Their games just don't seem to be turning profits either so ehh. Its probably FromSoftt.

Go get the studio whos having trouble

Option 1

Get Quantic Dream

Have a long history with sony. Plenty amazing game that i have played like fahtenheit, heavy rain, beyond two souls, detroit becomes human

Their upcoming project star wars eclipse are having development trouble

With sony financial back up they can make it

Option 2

Get Ready at Dawn

The Order 1886 is a game with mixed reception but has potential for sequel

Option 3

Get Konami

Sony has long outstanding history with Metal Gear Solid. The series has been dormant for awhile. With new partnership and sony funding we can revive the mgs game. Konami also has other ip like Castlevania.

Option 4

Built an entirely new studio. Start new.

All sounds good.
I think they will be building studios regardless but atm, they need to expand the studios they have or more importantly, buy studios, IPs and maybe even a publisher.

I think they should go big after Kadokawa again. Its wishful thinking but something like Square, Sega or Konami IPs. Sega is operating well and making profit. Square Im not sure but I think they are. Konami is the one without much studios if they go for them, but a handful of IPs

Then they should get some western studios like Ready at Dawn, Quantic etc

Definitely.

The Sony experiment of nurturing studios has failed of late.

After Kadokawa, Sony needs to get Square Enix.

Irrespective of what is happening I still believe they are the jewel in the crown for most Sony gamers.

Bluepoint and House Marque were classic PS style purchases in 2021. They should still go that route with studios like Arrowhead, Ember Labs, Slocap, Quantic Dreams, Ready at Dawn etc etc

But yeah they need moe than that.

Square would be great.

People worry about weird things. Square isnt losing money, they’ve released some great hits like FF7 Rebirth, Dragon Quest 3HD, Romancing Saga, Star Ocean and Mana this year. And Octopath 2 last year. All well received.
Yeah they have some duds like Foamstars and Forspoken, but they have plenty of great games and more potential.

Id be happy with Square or Sega-

Square brings the JRPP’s and MMO’s. Sega has a bit of everything including some JRPG’s like Persona, SMT, newer Yakuza, Shining Series, Phantasy Star etc

Sorry nurturing wasn’t the right term which Sony has had success with like Bluepoint and Housemarque.

I think Arrowhead needs to be acquired after the success of Helldivers 2.

Sony would have been better not acquiring Firewalk, Haven, Neon Kai and Firesprite and waited until they proved themselves.

I see you mentioned Ready at Dawn several times. But this studio doesn't exist anymore. It was acquired by Meta and got shut down later.

Yep and Quantic Dream have been acquired by a Chinese company I believe.

Not that it made a difference. Didn’t the CEO of QD have a dispute with Sony?

Reason why they don’t make exclusives for Sony anymore.

A lot of reasons not to move forward with Quantic Dream. There was a cultural mismatch with the CEO and leadership, but I also thnk that PlayStation as a brand was out growing that style of game. I think Sony recognized the ceiling was pretty low there.

Arrowhead will probably need to release a game on their own and for it to not perform all that well before they come to the table with Sony.

They fashion themselves to be the next Blizzard or FromSoftware.

What Sony does with its growth goals will be really interesting moving forward. I feel like with the fall of Square Enix, there is a massive market of people who want traditioanl JRPGs. It would be a great opportunity to remake Legend of Dragoon and Arc the Lad. Those games simply missed their windows.

It's something I think Sony doesn't understand about their IP.

Like Syphon Filter got boxed out by Metal Gear Solid and Splinter Cell, but it always had potential. The PSP games Bend made were both fantastic.

Killzone and Resistance probably both have more potential than they realize, esepcially if they end up on PC and have a GaaS element.

Astro Bot proved there is still a market for platformers outside of Mario. Which is why I've said for the longest time that Sony needs to try and get Crash and Spyro back and build them up with Jak and Ratchet (with the help of transmedia).

They would be good acquisitions, but Quantic Dream (acquired by Netease) and Konami aren't having any trouble, they're very well. Ready at Dawn did shut down in August, so I assume Sony can't buy it.

Regarding new studios, Sony has minimum 2 new ones in the works: the one with ex-Deviation devs and the Bungie spinoff. And well, it isn't really a new studio, but they also have Haven.

There was a cultural mismatch with the CEO and leadership
They had multiple investigations from the national, regional and local governements and got sued a few times. QD turned out to be innocent of everything and won all the things in the court with the exception of a case of one of the journalists that got sued by Quantic Dream, because QD couldn't prove he was acting on bad faith.
