Posts from another forum i found that keep install base/nintendo users up at night

  • "Still don’t get how PS5 is supposed to be selling software on the level of Switch when one has 10x more hardware on the market. If anything you have to say PS5 multiplats are over performing or Switch versions are under performing. But that would hurt the narrative."
  • "what impact are f2p/GaaS games (that are massively popular in Japan) having on software sales. The elephant in the room is that software is poor across the board for the most part unless it has Nintendo branding but no one wants to have that conversation."
There's this something I've read years ago, on the PS3/X360 days that, unfortunately, I can't find the source but I remember it went like this:
"PS is where the money really is, PS users are the ones that buy more games, that's why developers make more games for that platform".
And this is still true to this day.
Nintendo sells first party, Xbox used to sell shoot shoot bang bang games but now it doesn't sell anything at all.
What's left? PC and PS for 3rd parties and most games sell better on PS than on PC.
This is simply a reality that people HAVE to deal with.
"That’s the point some of us have been making though. Nintendo games are king in Japan and everything else is just along for the ride. Random games will pop up and sell well but the only constant is Nintendo.

The narrative is no one really wants a PS5 in Japan. When supply was low allegedly PS was over in Japan and it was a demand issue. Now that supply is high and sales actually went up correspondingly the story is now they are being scalped and there is an ultra focus on software sales.

No one has actually pointed out what game is actually supposed be selling better than it is on PS5. It a nebulous observation only meant to find a negative to the PS5 increased hardware sales."
Can you get me the link for this post?

lol the reply for that:
Nah.

The belief during the ps5 low months were that Sony wasn't prioritizing Japan, and due to the overall scarcity, they were being scalped.

Which they were. Was it a MGS level operation? No.

But a portion of the consoles they did get were being exported.

This same story played out all over.

I'm in a telegram financial chat and one of the guys in there literally bought a home(fixer upper to flip) off the strength of flipping PS5s a couple years ago.

It was in Tennessee but either way it was lucrative.

Because let's be real, the scalping assertion isn't something that just popped up a month ago. And that's how long it's been that the PS5 has leapfrogged the Switch in weekly sales.

As to what games were supposed to do better?

For one, all the 3P titles that skipped Switch.

Even if they weren't breaking into the top ten, a top thirty placement would have been more expected for some titles. And a lot of times, that didn't happen
So, a personal experience means everyone is doing it? They have evidence of shit and are crying because ps is doing good.

octopath II doing well - nice.

  • Xbox Series X – 595 (179,001)
  • Xbox Series S – 132 (250,301)
Series S price raise has made the console completely untenable in the region. damn...

Well, we knew this was going to happen and the surge prior to the price hike were those wanting it before the increase kicked into effect.

Even so, these are pitifully low numbers and I imagine the new normal for the platform in Japan won't be too much higher than what we're seeing this week.

Good news though is that Switch is still holding in there, even if it's seeing a decline in hardware sales (I think Nintendo doing a Mario bundle for NA is also a bit indicative of combating a hardware sales drop in that region, but it's another topic). The software is still doing very strong.

The PS5 seems to have finally settled into a groove now that supply is stable and plentiful. Even the software is starting to chart more. Six months ago you wouldn't have seen more than a single PS5 game on the Top 10 charts, if that. Now we're seeing multiple. I'm sure the actual numbers will grow over time for what charts, as well, as the install base builds.

I haven't even visited there yet but I already can guess they're concern trolling about "PS5 Software" now that the hardware is beating the Switch

No, that's ResetERA, as typical. Apparently having three games in the Top 10 is "dead" when another system hasn't had a game in the Top 10 since it launched in the territory.

They will then try spinning it as "but subscription services!", and forget that PlayStation has a subscription service as well. Meaning chances are if a lot of transaction is coming from F2P & games in the sub service for the other platform, that's probably also the case for PlayStation.

But you can't use common sense when it comes to PlayStation over there. You gotta cry about meritocracy in a thread over plastic faceplates using arguments that'd make a skinhead blush.

All the posts were pulled from this thread.

And this is the other side of the coin. There are still level-headed posters on ResetERA but they get drowned out by the absolute brainlets, part of that being the way the moderation and administrative staff handle enforcement of their own rules in threads around there.

I mean you have bad faith and lame posters on any forum, even here, but if the mods are up to doing what they're supposed to, the actual trash gets identified and slapped with a warning or banned. Reset mods only seem to do that when it's something against sociopolitical narratives that have little to do with the actual gaming content itself.

I visited installbase and it appears they've mostly left the PS5 software argument alone for this week, now it appears they're arguing if Octopath 2 is selling less because it's not exclusive to Switch, which makes absolutely zero sense, but just another slight dig at a game being released on PS.

It's not too surprising when you consider how much ResetERA leans Nintendo. A lot of the baseless, idiotic talking points they use for PlayStation to "copy" Microsoft's gaming strategy, they don't dare use them with Nintendo. Suggest that Nintendo port some of their games to PC (even though this would lead to more revenue, as they make the argument for Sony, and last I checked Nintendo is a company that also would like more revenue & profit), and you'll probably get a gang of mods and admin trying to "correct" you why that isn't a good idea. But only when it's Nintendo.

Constructive criticism of Nintendo is heavily restricted there, whereas with PlayStation it's the complete opposite: the more outrageous your criticism, the more likely that thread gets bumped to the top. Microsoft is somewhere in the middle relative those two. Honestly I think part of it is because a lot of that staff, and some posters, are old enough to recall when PS2 curbstomped the Gamecube (and the PS1 doing more or less the same to N64) and knocked Nintendo off from being #1 in the console market. It's not too dissimilar from the delusional fanatics who are itching at MS to "dominate" Sony because they blame Sony for Sega leaving the market as a console maker and think MS achieving what it wants is "revenge" for Sega.

Just all playground, childish fantasy BS that you'd think they would have grown out of when they reached adulthood, but nope.

As time goes on, people get more clever in concealing their biases, but to those aware of their leanings, it just means more opportunities to see them show said biases in how they let them contort their talking points.

There is no logical means to conclude a game sells LESS because it's on MORE platforms. That's a fanboy/fangirl argument. Otherwise if this notion were one they held true to a logical conclusion, I would hope none of those same individuals have made arguments for "why FF XVI will sell less because it's not on PC and Xbox", or arguments that Forspoken would have done better if it were in Game Pass (a service that Microsoft's own data shows leads to some cannibalization of software sales).

Not without a damn good theory to rationalize it, anyway.

PS4, and now even 5 are selling third party software almost as well as the switch (Sometime better) despite the gigantic gulf in hardware sales. Japanese pubs know where their bread gets buttered and its PS and PC.

Although I think it depends on the type of game, it is worth noting for the AAA Japanese devs, absolutely they rely on PS and to a smaller degree (at least in Japan), PC.

Like if it's a Sonic game, I think you're still going to see the majority of those sales on a Nintendo system, that's where most of the fanbase is. Maybe that changes in the future but it just seems to me Nintendo's been Sonic's new home since Gamecube. Most other Japanese AAA games though? Yeah, I think they need PlayStation, for many reasons.

A personal friend experience in Tennessee to backup a narrative in a Japan thread.

People are dumb…. scalped PS5 ends in consumer hands that buys games… or they believe scalped PS5 will be in forever a warehouse without never being turned on lol

The only difference is that the middle (scalper) got some profit from it.

switch is on year 6... ps5 may very well be considered to have just launched in japan in 2023 tbh. They were no Playstation consoles, 4 or 5, on shelves at all for 2 years it seems.
True, Switch is also a portable which has a higher upper limit than a home console, which is why I never personally compare the two. They are in two separate lanes and have mostly a unique software library due to the power difference.

Not to mention the dooming about FF16 sales after the previews came out lol

Man don't even get me started on that one 😂They have an entire thread dedicated over a nontroversy because some dumb writer from The Verge wants their N'gai Croal RE5 moment.

Always felt that RE5 controversy was a reach; what some are trying to do with FF XVI is such a reach they must have arms like Luffy. I'm just wondering if they're going to try blacklisting the game like they did Hogwarts Legacy or initiated a failed boycott.

Anyway, that's off-topic...

The truth about Nintendo is they had to cannibalise their home console business to survive after the WiiU flop. They had the Wii at 100 mil and the DS at 150m in the same generation. They're at half that now after 6 years.

Reee and GAF mediacreate threads used to be full of screeching Nintendo fanboys. I think anyone encroaching on their safe space like PS5 is doing now is bound to trigger some form of PTSD.

Thats why they’re all rooting for this acquisition to go through. They are tired of getting stomped every gen by sony

Basically the only way sony doesn’t continue it’s dominance in gaming is if they allow Microsoft to buy every major 3rd party publisher.
