Metal Gear Solid (PS1) is a Metroidvania and why Spider-Man 2 felt empty

I was thinking about Metal Gear Solid today and how that game was pure design genius. And I thought about how it definitely feels like a 3D (top down) metroidvania. So I wondered if anyone else had that idea and there was a reddit post where someone got flamed for the suggestion, but I agree with him.

In Metal Gear Solid, your items and weapons allow you to progress to different levels of the game. While the game is pretty linear, it's not as if Metroidvanias are open world...

I think Metroidvania type games are inherently some of the best gameplay design you can have. You're actively invested in progressing through the game because there is always a subsequent challenge that needs to be tackled and something you need to do differently to resolve it. Then there is the end game where you are at peak levels and the overall challenge of the game can be upped based on the strength that your character has reached and everything you've learned through the game.

That's also where I think Spider-Man 2 went awry.

There was no sense of progress. Nothing you earn in the game feels necessary to progressing. I
n fact you get abilities that you don't have for the entire game, so you're not actually at your strongest at the end of the game from that perspective.
The desire to have both Spider-Men in the game leaves little difference between the two. The game isn't at all balanced against the differences between characters. Something I assume Insomnaic is looking to avoid in Wolverine, with Wolverine and Jean Grey having very different play mechanics. What they do with Jean will be interesting because I don't think I've ever seen her power type used properly in a video game... I heard Control was good, maybe they'll take inspiration from Control like they took inspiration from Arkham Asylum for Spider-Man.

The Spider-Man 2 skill trees are uninteresting because there is nothing to distinguish each ability from a gameplay perspective. You're not even forced to learn each move and the moves have little to nothing to do with how you progress through the game. The lack of development I think takes you out of the game and makes it repetitive and ultimately boring.

The first game did a much better job at this and with a generally better story, made for a much better overall game.

I also think Spider-Man 2 struggles from being a linear game disguised as an open world game. There's really no incentive to explore the open world. I think they try to adjust for this with the Miles storylines, but all the missions like this were extremely weak.

MGS is genius design as you say, I'm not a big fan of Metroidvanias...I never thought of it that way but I can see how it resembles that style now that you point it out.

It's so infinitely replayable, I literally just completed it again twice and loved every minute (except the pal key part).

It's replayable in a way MGS2 really isn't for me.

Metal Gear Solid 2 has a lot of the same failings as Spider-Man 2.

You have to make the second game larger in scope than the first game, but you don't build out the same game design fundamentals.

Metal Gear Solid 2 has some nice neat gameplay mechanics, but a lot of them are surface level. Like being able to hide in lockers to escape enemy patrols or to be able to take enemies hostage or hide bodies in lockers. These are really cool and definitely worthwhile, but they don't yield to progression.

The lack of feeling progression is what makes MGS2 feel like a chore to play. Raiden's actual skills and weapons don't actually seem improved from MGS1 and Kojima probably did that with the idea that Raiden isn't as experienced as Snake, but we're Snake. We feel like we've taken a step backwards in gameplay and narratively, which isn't fun. What's worse is you never really get the sense of progression with Raiden that you would feel more accomplished than you did in the first game.

The game feels longer and that's probably only because Kojima doubled down on cutscenes and codec discussions, which also make the game feel like a chore to get through at times.

The pal card and the wolf section are both really annoying in MGS, but there are plenty of stages in MGS2 that feel like that.

Who wants to play as Jean grey in wolverine…. Like seriously.
Probably the same people who want to play as Atreus in gow and saga in Alan wake.

LOL, your mind is so warped by agendas that you don't realize that playing a 15 hour pure melee game is going to get dull and uninteresting really fast.

There's a reason why they gave Kratos an Axe that he can throw in God of War 2018 rather than just his blades.

Building out Jean Grey here not only breaks up the gameplay routine, but gives you two characters down for an X-Men game, so when you move to develop the X-Men, you only have a handful of characters you have to develop.

My guess would be Cyclops, Nightcrawler, and maybe Storm.

Gambit, Colossus, Beast, and Iceman are possibilities, but not sure how much gameplay uniqueness they give you.

Can you tell me a modern AAA game with 15+ hours of pure melee that is successful?

Then don’t make your game that long or make it better.
If I have to play as someone else in Alan wake2 because Alan wake gameplay gets boring… then the solution is not to introduce new character but make the game better or shorter.

Agenda or not I don’t want to play as anyone else other than wolverine in wolverine game. Why are we all pretending anyone else should matter in wolverine game.

And these characters don’t make gameplay better usually and are just forced agendas. Atreus gameplay was horrible. I wanted to get back to kratos

Notice you weren't able to come up with a single example of a game that was 15+ hours and pure melee.

Your solution of make the game shorter has another consequence of people not thinking the game is worth it.

You think it's about forced agendas, but the reality is that during playtests you're going to find that you need to break up monotony.

Kratos has a pretty good mix of weapons especially in Ragnarok, but you risk him becoming stale without breaking up the gameplay. This is exactly what happens in Spider-Man 2 with both Spider-Men having essentially the exact same gameplay. It's also why they throw in spider-bot and mary jane missions. You don't think spider-bot is about pushing an agenda, because your own personal agenda has no problem with it.

Games have become significantly longer and gamers demand that with the price tags associated with games. And even though many of us would be happy with shorter games, that's not as efficient for developers either. Once you have a game built out, building some length into the game doesn't drastically increase the price of the game compared to creating an entirely new game.

Ultimately, that's a flaw of a character like Wolverine is that you can't fit him into a modern video game at 70 dollars and have him play as just himself. Wolverine has rarely been a solo character in any game of this length.

X-Men Origins Wolverine is probably the longest and it comes in at 9 hours. Marvel's Wolverine is probably going to be double that length...

Marvel super heroes are going to be so passe by the time wolverine releases. Sony has to pivot to something else quickly. It's time that they develop their own best in class WRPG.

Their ubisoftian action adventure games are not WRPG even if they have skill trees, gear and numbers that go up. Just in case anyone asks.

LOL, Deadpool v Wolverine just did 1.3 billion dollars at the box office... and its still in theaters...

Wolverine is coming out in 2025 or 2026. I'm confident he'll still be popular then.

Marvel super heroes are as popular today as it was last year, or the previous year, or a decade ago, or two decades ago, etc etc etc.

There is no passé by here.

And they are popular from 3 years old kids to 90 years old grampas.

Yea you could def call it a Metroidvania. You can pretty much backtrack up to the beginning right from almost any point right? It’s been years since I’ve played it but I do remember doubling back after some major boss fights.

MGS2 is my least favorite in the series and consider both 2 and 4 the weakest games tbh.

Metal Gear Solid being a metrovania is like saying Resident Evil is a meteovania too.

You need to understand why MGS fails to be a meteovania:
  • It is linear.
  • It is based in story progression instead new abilities.
  • There is no exploration (again progress is based in story).
The key point of metrovania is to have progression based item / abilities that you receive via exploration.
It is neither linear or tailed to a story progression like MGS like game.

Think like every Super Metroid gamer plays it in a different way…following different paths, and order you get progression items/abolities.

In MGS all players follow the same story progression no matter what because there is no options like a typical metrovania.

Depend of the story progression…
After meet Merly you can’t backtrack to start area.
After beat Mantis you can backtrack to start area.

  • It is linear.

Metroid gives the illusion it isn't linear, but for the most part it is. Metal Gear Solid is no different. There are multiple paths in cases to advance to the same objective and there are alternate ways of resolving some objectives.

  • It is based in story progression instead new abilities.

Please tell me how you can progress without getting the required weapons needed to advance. Those are the same as abilities.

  • There is no exploration (again progress is based in story)

There is absolutely exploration.

I don’t think the genre needs to be strictly ability based for progression or for there to be an overlap with player appeal. Exploration is %100 part of the hooks to the genre too. There’s also the interconnected worlds thing

I even consider Bloodborne loosely Metroidvania-like. And with that you’re mostly progression gated by combat encounters.

More games like this vs open world pls. Unfortunately most Metroidvanias are indie.

I hope they rethink these things...

It's really killing the flow and resonance of their games and eroding trust gradually.

Arbiter, Raiden, Atreus… swerving the audience and playing a good chunk of the game as a different lead is almost always the wrong move.

Many sequels make this mistake. I still don’t like Raiden despite all the damage control since. I was still screwed out of playing Snake.
