Microsoft CEO's pay will be tied to Xbox more than ever in 2025

CEOs of publicly traded companies usually receive most of their annual compensation through cash and stock that is tied to how the company performs in certain ways.

For example, the CEO of Exxon, who made $36.9 million last year, has some of his pay tied to the company’s “energy transition.”

The CEO of John Deere, who made $26.7 million last year, has some of his pay tied to the “operating return on sales.” It’s best not to sell all those trucks and tractors at a loss.

Executives at Meta are tasked with admittedly unmeasurable performance goals such as the the exhortation to “build awesome things” and “go out and tell our story.”

But some companies are more specific, including Microsoft, which announced revised performance criteria for their top executives yesterday in the company’s annual proxy filing to shareholders.

If you’re reading Game File (you are!), you might be interested in knowing that Xbox—specifically revenue from content and services; not hardware—is set to be a bigger part of senior Microsoft execs’ performance pay targets in 2025 than it has been in years.

It’s clear now why Microsoft aims to expand its content across all platforms.

dropping near $70 billion on a singular investment will make the utmost focus to be that that investment bears fruit and is profitable.

More percentage based in his bonus is tied to growth in services and content revenue bot related to hardward. You are not gonna get that growth on xbox and pc alone. Now more than ever it will drive the 3rd party shift

Shareholders never cared what Xbox did until the Bethesda and Activision stuff especially Activision stuff... Dragging the company into a PR nightmare.. they want back to that 78 billion spent for gaming.

Of course it is tied now.

Even a donkey can see that going multi platform will make revenue explode for Xbox.

So putting that as a metric for performance bonus is really wise.

User base to buy games is king and PlayStation/Switch will give sales that Xbox never saw in the whole history.

At the same time they were wise to remove any tie with Gamepass growth… it already fucked them one time.

I am wondering what the future for Gamepass is supposed to be, at this point.

It was a huge Damokles-Sword, hurting their sales more in the long run, than it made up for! Cloud Gaming isn't about to take off anytime soon either...

But they can't step back from it either, without losing the remains of their customers...
