It was clearly a way to hopefully accelerate the subs to Game Pass and hope Playstation followed suit.

It didn't work in any capacity, so an obvious mistake that they can't easily walk away from and that probably forced them into some of these desperate moves.

Their answer to grow Gamepass is to buy Bethesda, Activision Blizzard and more. Their entire business model is absurd.

They've already fumbled the bag because they came in unprepared to take advantage of these leaks (which anyone with foresight should have known was a strong possibility in this case). They should have had press releases spinning up to every major outlet within 30 minutes of this email leaking. Instead they continue to allow MS and its collaborators continue to control the media narrative and tarnish their reputation.

This one's a failure on Jimbo and the Sony board. They are entirely too passive.

First of all, oof. Secondly, sounds like, based on the speculation of the other party to Hines' convo, part of Xbox's ploy was to get GP on PlayStation, which we know they've tried to do in the past. Basically worming their and their disgusting business model's way onto superior platforms.

Their actions show that they are ok with just dealing with whatever happens including becoming a third-party publisher that publishes their games on PC and Xbox.

Sony doesn't seem to believe in PlayStation or even consoles as much as their fans.

I listed in a previous post the many times MS went our of their way to directly attack PlayStation and Sony mostly just take it on the chin (MLB, Persona/Yakuza/Sega, Kojima/Death Stranding, Bethesda, ABK, Marathon, all the MS direct digs at them, all the obvious shilling).

Jimbo and Herman do not run the ship optimally. This instance is just one of many. I will continue to say it... Fuck Jim Ryan and Hermen Hults. Sony's CEO will eventually get a clue when some start whispering in his ear and the mountain of evidence is beyond tolerance... Sony does have plenty of Japanese overseers and in the wings. The question is why they've not acted. Last thing Sony needs is to have a Sony Pictures type of leadership running SIE, which is currently the case when Jim and Hermen took the hard fought baton. MS leadership fucking everything they touch or do makes Jim/Herman highly qualified replacements by comparison... that is a problem, isofar as the supervision aka Sony's CEO going by that metric and not critical self-reflection of how his underlings are running SIE.

Yep, exactly that, overall from everything I've seen I can speculate that:
Pete Hines wasn't all that happy with Bethesda's games being exclusive to Xbox when ABK's were promised to be multiplat, they've also been asked (Told to) make them exclusive.
They (Microsoft) weren't enthusiastic about announcing any supported platforms or if Lucasfilm were to announce any platforms before they renegotiated the contract (which we now know they did), probably because of the hit to public opinion?
Microsoft looked into the possibility of buying strategic partners of both Sony and Nintendo.
Microsoft wasn't all that happy with Geforce Now hosting their IP and content.
Microsoft wasn't happy that F76 was on PSNow without extra return of revenue, declined Minecraft on PSNow as it was seen as a Gamepass competitor, probably wanted a Gamepass app or Browser support on PS4/5

That's dumb as shit, being a platform holder is like 80% of their revenue, you expect me to believe the Sony board will be fine just giving up like $20b/yr USD in revenue? If so they need to get their brains checked for damage

Well, they are the ones ok with publishing multiple games on Xbox, including having their games being released day on on gamepass, they are the ones making Windows ports of their biggest single player AAA games that get cracked day one.

They clearly think that GaaS is going to save them (when the most likely scenario is that they'll miss on pretty much all shots).

We even see here that at least on Xbox the guy that hold the position equivalent to the one Hermen holds on PlayStation was the one coming up with the acquisition strategies.
