A modder / game designer by the name of Kaze Emanuar has been working with the original source code of Mario 64 and improving it in order to have the game run better on original hardware. I found this series, which is still not concluded, absolutely fascinating, as it highlights the importance of well optimized code and knowledge of the machine you're coding for.

Kaze has for many times stated that the original team was unaware of certain QOL improvements that could be deployed, as they were inexperienced with the console and engine while developing the game.

Please find the videos below, in release order. I'll try to keep these updated as much as I can.

@VFX_Veteran any comments here? I thought you'd find it interesting.
I would have to listen to all those youtube vids (which would be a lot of time). I'll have to piece-meal it. Very interesting project though. This was absolutely required back in the day when there was hardly any APIs to write to. ASM was the defacto standard.

I wanted to bump this thread to see if any of the new forum members wants to comment on it.

IMO this modders work really highlights how mastery of the hardware + sdk can yield incredible results, and why I'm such a firm believer that developing for one SKU is better than having your baseline as say, PCs, when creating games for current gen consoles.

Why do you need fix something that doesn't need fix?
It was perfection already and one of very best games I ever played.

Anyway what I can see is that Nintendo coders didn't optimized the game enough like this guy is doing.

He's not fixing, he's optimizing.
