the thing that makes me sad about the PS4 is that its legs were cut off early due to these chip shortages.
The cheapest you can get a PS4 on amazon is $485 which is more than a digital PS5 and almost the same as a regular PS5

There is still a market of people who would still buy a PS4 for the cheap games before investing in a next gen machine and the PS4 could be at 130 million by now.
This is a good thing, everyone jump onto ps5….let the past gen die.

You could find PS3 with BC even today if you take sometime to find one 🤷‍♂️
brand new sold in stores? show me where and I will buy a few (not unopened consoles sitting in people basements). were talking about what was in production for the early years of PS3's life cycle. Anyway point is you could still get a PS2 BC model of PS3 until at least early 2009 if you wanted meaning Sony had no reason to continue PS2 in anywhere except brazil where it would launch for the first time that year.

come on dude, you really gonna edit that in after I already replied? of course they were still producing BC compatible PS3's after 2007, just because the last revision with BC released in 2007 doesn't mean they stopped selling them in 2007? what is so hard to understand about that?

I agree on letting PS4 software support die, I would love to see what god of war could do on PS5 only with out having to make a PS4 version but that doesn't mean we should leave out an audience of people who don't mind buying a last gen console for the time being. (I have a lot of friend who usually don't jump into the next gen until 2-3 years until it's lifecycle) People that bought a PS1 brand new in 2002 had no effect on how people enjoyed their brand new PS2.

Yeah a million consoles in this day and age for global shipment ain’t shit. Japan gets like 20 a week
My point is that if there is no PS5 supply issues PS4 shipment should be lower than 117m.
It just reached that number due Sony having issues to produce PS5.

There is no point in sell a PS4 if PS5 can play all it games.

There is a reason for sony, profits margin. I imagine selling a regular PS4 at $399 with a game (or $349 by itself) makes sony a good amount of profit so while Sony sells the PS5 at break even or maybe a slight profit (June 2021 Jim Ryan confirmed the disc version of PS5 was being sold at break even: https://www.thegamer.com/standard-ps5-break-even-profit-june/#:~:text=Sony Believes Its Standard Edition PS5 Will Break Even Next Month,-By Josh Coulson&text=Jim Ryan has revealed the,for the console after that.)
and I imagine the digital PS5 is still being sold at a loss since I can't imagine removing a 4K Blu Ray Disc Drive makes up the $100 difference itself the PS4 is a way of offsetting any losses the PS5 hardware might still be giving them.

PS1 was sold for 6 years after the PS2 launched and still sold about 28-29 million more consoles until it was discontinued in 2006. There was no reason for PS1 to be continued since PS2 could play every PS1 game except for a few like how the PS5 can play every PS4 game except for a few: https://www.kotaku.com.au/2020/10/sony-lists-10-ps4-games-that-wont-run-on-ps5/

I can't find where the PS1 was at December 31st, 1999 (The last quarter before the PS2 launched) but found where the PS1 was at in October of 2001
October 2001, PS1 sold 88.26 million sold: https://www.theregister.com/2001/10/25/so_how_many_ps1s/
PS1 would finish at 102.4 million sales: https://www.sie.com/en/corporate/data.html
Why would anyone buy a PS1 when the PS2 does everything it can do?

This will be the baseline for this generation. Anyone expecting another 2-1 sales split? PlayStation did it once they should do again.

Will be interesting, lots of changes. Big acquisitions, Sonypass, chip shortages.

Let the games….commence!

might not be 2:1 this gen but its still gonna be significant.

I’m thinking xbox will do 80m (on par with the 360) and ps5 will do 110-120 again

If supply gets better, PS5 could do PS2 numbers.
PS5 is starting off with a Sony that was much stronger than Sony was in early PS4.

God of War grew twice as big if not more as it was after GOW3/Acension
Ratchet and Clank and Demons Souls did great numbers despite being $70
Horzion sold more than any Killzone game
Sony didn't have anything like Spider-Man at the beginning of the PS4 generation
Final Fantasy is now a console exclusive on PlayStation
Resident Evil games on Playstation are selling the best they ever had

Nothing will change this Gen.
XSX is on the shelves, XSS is being sold on discounts already.
Only good thing I guess Xbox has for it self is the rent to own schemes now that the economy is going down the shitter.

On the other hand PS5 is the most sought-after console in the history.

There might be some change in the market share, now that MS gave up on trying to convince consumers with quality content, and opted to coerce consumers by taking content away in bulk amounts.

I'm not sure that subscriptions are of interest to consumers in depression times. The drop in netflix subscriptions suggests otherwise.

Could very well be the case...
But I'm very cynical on how informed consumer choices are with subscribtions, specially with rent to own deals like All Access.
