That would be a very expensive purchase. Hmmm.. . reminds me of when Disney bought Pixar.

I don't know what to feel about this tbh.

That's right when Microsoft buys stuff though. :p

Skype, Nokia, Activision, and on and on.

Dang I am not trying to come across like a hater! I just don't think they make a lot of very smart moves.

I also don't think it's going to happen. I don't get the fit between the product and what MS wants to do.
Well a lot of companies are only "for sale" when their stock price is struggling a bit, or at least stagnant. Same reason why MS always seems to "overpay", because you have to to get a board of directors to agree outside of situations where stock is plummeting.

It's then what you do with the company that matters... and MS doesn't have the best track record. No reason to label anyone a hater for saying as such.. they have a lot of quieter purchases though that made a killing for them.

Also Nokia ended up being a boon because of patents lol MS making money every time most Android phones sell was a pretty sweet deal for them.

I smell desperation, maybe they'll use it as an excuse to buy Sony/Sony Pictures later on. If it's just Netflix I hope they do it, I've been wanting to cancel Netflix for a long time and there is a great likelihood that MS will be even worse at producing movies than they are at producing game.

Why aren't they going after Valve if they have all this money to spend? Is Valve completely against being acquired by MS? Their store on windows is still a complete joke.

'Netflix (NFLX) has chosen Microsoft (MSFT) to help roll out its new ad-supported offering — but one analyst says the deal might conceal "a hidden agenda" while questioning the timeline of this agreement.

"It could be that Netflix is looking for an exit," Laura Martin, Needham senior analyst, told Yahoo Finance Live on Thursday, proposing perhaps the streaming giant is making long-term play to be acquired by Microsoft.

The analyst went on to explain that no other company that Netflix could have partnered with would have been able to make the $100 billion purchase, either due to financial constraints or regulatory issues.

"Netflix is trying to get closer to Microsoft in hopes that, after Microsoft digests its Activision acquisition, it turns and buys Netflix next," Martin suggested.

The bold prediction comes as Martin questioned Netflix's decision given Microsoft's lack of experience in the third-party ad tech business.'

Would this be a smart move for MSFT or were you hoping they would go for something else?

With the fast growing competition in the movie/television streaming market by big players such as Warner, NBC and Disney - I think this move would make a lot of sense to at least consider.

Consider this Netflix stock price in 2017 was around $190 per share as a competitionless pioneer in streaming high production media in a service. This price grew to around $700 in December of 2021 before a massive crash (that coincided with the rest of the equity market crashing) and now rests at the same $190 share price today.

Taking in factors such as highly competitive streaming market and Netflix loss of subscriber growth, a very large company could very well stop the bleeding. That is where Microsoft could come in and capitalize on this considering the stock is a fourth of the fair market value it was just six months ago - which was similar scenarios for previous purchases in Activision and Bethesda.

This makes no sense. Microsoft clearly has no interest in movie streaming.
Netflix would be an insane strategic play for MS. And they are no stranger to movie streaming either.

But this story is still completely pulled out of some analysts ass and is probably total BS lol

MS "won" a contract with Netflix to be their ad provider and someone needed some click bait to make it sound more juicy than it is.

Very stupid move. Netflix is on the decline and has lost the support of the public opinion.

TBF, Netflix seem to be trying to turn things around. They're getting rid of unsuccessful programming, and trying to turn to content for profitability. But then, they're raising sub prices and probably have too many shows with too little quality control, not to mention they have a bad habit of dumping all episodes at once (hurts long-term mindshare and online discussion).

Someone said that about the Supermassive relationship the other day too? Do we know, as the general public, what happened there?

There best-not be Sony Pictures/PS friction after all that 'One Sony' approach bollocks. This anything to do with some mobile games are raking-in money for the media/anime side of Sony, and PS is jealous; literally having to re-start their own PS Mobile division under the PS arm; instead of moving over the assets of older PS Mobile division that they shut down?

Can someone fill me in on what this is about? First time I'm hearing of Sony Pictures/PlayStation friction or anything with Supermassive for that matter.

Hope there isn't some conflict between those sides of Sony, I don't want to see another Sega of America/Sega of Japan saga form (especially when if anything, Sony Pictures should be thankful to PlayStation division because those Spiderman games have definitely helped the films. And I bet it's over Spiderman).

I think the idea was right next to Netflix in app is the Xbox symbol. They want access to all those subscribers for streaming game pass.Remember Netflix is getting into games.

Sometimes I forget that the 360 was the first system to actually do digital movie/tv show distribution, even before services like Netflix transitioned to doing it. I don't think they actually had streaming for that content on 360 pre-Netflix, but they did have a marketplace for selling the digital content.

MS's always been at least partly interested in movies/tv/music media content and trying to expand into it. They've just always sucked really badly at it themselves.

Netflix can run themselves into the ground just fine, they don't need MSFT for that.

Oh... shit....
Yeah! WTF do you mean ads!?

What the hell is happening to games and media lately? HULU has adverts even if you pay. Ubisoft are taking-away access to previously purchased games. I mean.... are we reeeeally going to have to go right back to the high seas for media and gaming? I'm not 12 anymore.

But then again, I pay when the service/quality is good enough. Start taking chunks out of what you offer and.... ehhhhhh.... we'll see.

Netflix is adding an ad supported tier guys.. that's all.

MS has an advertising organization and has bought a couple of companies to expand it.

I doubt there will ever be Netflix content you are forced to watch ads on.. that shit is for the "Internet TV" services that charge insane amounts, while also having advertisements... GEE WHAT A GREAT DEAL!!

Ohh, is that what's happening? An optional lower priced tier? That's fine, considering Netflix keep creeping the price up.

I'd imagine that it would be an intense bidding war if Netflix ever went up for sale. I know that they are losing subscribers, but I'd have to say that Netflix is my favorite streaming platform in terms of the UI and UX. Hulu, Disney and Peacock need some work. I am sure Ads will offset a lot of their costs, but from what I am reading, Microsoft doesn't really have much XP in the type of deal they've entered into with Netflix with?
