Calling it now. New Call of Duty games won't come on Gamepass on day one.

I agree. Phil could've cleared any doubts on that today with this statement but left it very ambiguous, which usually means only one thing. In this case, the new COD releases won't come to GamePass "Day 1", but I think MS could still do something clever here.

Remember when FH5 was released early by a couple days? I'm sure MS saw that revenue coming in and are thinking about extending that strategy with COD. I wouldn't be surprised if they do a 1-month exclusivity for new COD to Xbox and PC, then afterwards, release it on PlayStation and GamePass. They know a lot of people will probably rush to buy it on Xbox & PC, but since it's just a one-month early release, those willing to wait for the new campaign on PS can just...wait the month and then buy it.

I am curious if the game releases with a native version in GamePass or if it's just a cloud version, though. I'm thinking it could be the latter. This would redefine a lot what it means to be "Day 1" in GamePass but MS's already opened the door for this with FH5 and I don't see them stopping the practice with just that title.

Yer, i don't see the "Day one" slogan they normally chuck around.

Diablo will be no doubt a massive hit, but I don't think they should put that game on their service day one anyway, they should cash in on the sales, just like Sony is doing with their top exclusives.

They'll probably do something similar with Diablo IV, again, like with FH5. Release it to buy a couple of weeks or month early on Xbox & PC, then bring (maybe just cloud version?) to GamePass and native PS5 release.

Or, they can do Xbox/PC/PlayStation releases a month ahead of GamePass but where being a GamePass sub gets you the game for even cheaper, and maybe some perks exclusive to those with GamePass subscriptions (somewhat like the Riot Games stuff on PC GamePass).

This is expected.

They’ve spent all this money, there mentality isn’t oh we’re gonna take a hit if we lose sales here ( Playstation, Xbox sales etc ).
They are Investing in Gamepass, spending billions and billions, 10’s of billions more than Playstation or Xbox make on revenue. Its for their vision of the “future”.

They want to take people from other platforms by saying, all the games are gonna be on Gamepass. They are willing to take a loss for along time to eventually say we have everyone on Gamepass ( my opinion on their idea and plan, not saying it will work or not )

There's just one problem: Phil Spencer didn't actually say they are putting new COD releases in GamePass Day 1. The statement is intentionally ambiguous on that note.

So this could very much just be about the legacy content for COD into GamePass, which was always a no-brainer. Overwatch is going F2P so it doesn't matter if it's in GamePass or not. Diablo is the only IP listed that may suggest they're talking about new releases for COD in GamePass Day 1, but we also know Diablo sells nowhere near as much as COD, and it may even be a stretch to say if any of this is in reference to "Day 1" releases.

I'd suggest you to include this in the OP because even they said it many times, some people refuse to think they'll continue to release new CoD games on PS as they do with the Minecraft IP:

I think MS wants to put all the next CoD games day one on GP, but that a potential deal signed with Sony for the next few CoDs may prevent them for doing so for these next few games. In fact, we may see them on PS Plus before seeing them in GP, as happened with Deathloop.

After over a year or a year and a half after launch these games that have a deal with Sony could be released on GP, if they signed a similar deal than the one they had with RE Village.

And then the games released after them, the future CoD games not included in any deal with Sony, would release day one on PS5 and GP. Notice that what Phil said in the article -this time clearly- is that the future releases of CoD games will continue launchin (and also day one) on PS. As they do with Minecraft.

I've threadmarked this.

Jaytechtv made a great point on his show today that by announcing COD and the other games will be on gamepass this early, that it effectively kills the sales of those games this holiday on the xbox platform. Really bizarre they would announce that this early even if that was the inevitable plan. Something to note they never spcecify which call of dutys and the words "day one" were not used, even though i assume they will be.,

I think they will release on Xbox, PC, PS day one, as Phil said. Won't be any timed exclusives, but Xbox will get exclusive content and open beta and pre-order early access, just like PlayStation gets does.

The games won't launch on Gamepass because that'll be just too much revenue lost. Xbox can hide behind the PlayStation's marketing agreement at least until 2025.

So no bet I guess? 😂

Nope. Doesn't have the games I want still. It's basically flushing money.

Again, Game Pass is the Sizzler of the gaming industry. Cheap garbage to fill up your time, when time is your most important asset. Not cash.
You could've stopped after the first two sentences and it would've been fine since it's just your opinion. But you had to go further. Keep coping, my friend 😘

Yeah totally agree.
I just wouldn’t be surprised if They treat it like Starfield or Halo etc, day 1 gamepass.
I wouldnt even be surprised if after a couple of years they pull it from Playstation all together. MS logic doesn‘t always make sense and they have the deep pockets to support their mistakes lol

I think they are willing to lose alot more money then any of us think, all so they can claim the quote from the Highlander….. there can be only one!!!

Phil's kinda shooting himself in the foot with his statement when you see why the CMA is looking into the deal more closely.
He has been saying things since zenimax purchase that regulators can now use against him with this purchase.
Hopefully the ms lawyers dont tell him to stfu because i would love to see the deal go under because of something he said that triggered regulators.

Only if you hate gaming, I guess.

Nah dog. I have a new Banging PC, PS5, and a switch. And no one I know uses GAmepass on PC. And even with GAMEPASS being much better on Xbox consoles than what is offered on PC. Outside of a few titles like Gungrave Gore, and Warhammer those really are the only games for rest of this fall I'm somewhat interested in.

I mean people get excited for halo, gears, forza, fable, avowed ect. Only super hardcore people actually specifically follow certain studios like Obsidian who look forward to pentiment, and shit like that.
Pentiment is a fan type of title, as in it has a lot of the cheeky stuff people have come to love from Obsidian me included. 2022 has been literally barren for anything big and exciting on gamepass.

There is no denying that. Now if you are into smaller titles, and like more AA style of games like Plagues tale, like Atomic hear, like scorn, then yea gamepass looks like theres some things to be excited for.
But the average person/family is not paying $300-500 to focus on playing those. They might try them which I think is what Microsoft wants out of how they are treating their curation.

They want people to get into other things besides big, expensive games because if they dont, then all people will do is what currently is happening to the subscriptions services for entertainment. They will sub for a couple months when they know when big content drops, then fall off once there's nothing there.
Thats what has been happening post Covid. People are getting more selective in what they are watching/sub to.

Thats going to be Microsfot's hardest thing to combat, and we are seeing it currently with how they need Activision/Blizzard to go through because they need big bombastic content on the regular in their service to keep people interested long term.

As it stand now, Gamepass in terms of the amount of games, and value is great. But in terms of getting people who enjoy big bombastic games it aint cutting the cheese.

That's even sadder that you're a grown woman but have to act like a child 😛

And you know I can actually just put you ignore, and I won't have to hear from you ever again? I don't have to bet to achieve that 😄
