It’s 10 people.....at the Sony building.....not a studio. Not a big deal at all.

Of course it’s not good when anybody loses a job or any game in development gets canceled. Thankfully though Sony will continue to support and fund those type of AA and indie games that probably made Pixileopus redundant anyway.

Talk about a hot take.

Their last game was 2019, it didn't sell at all, Entwined sucked, and the new game they were making on collab with Sony animation studio did not pan out after getting a budget in 2021.

But yea lets keep working on something thats not working out?

You want a redfall situation?

Intervening early is part of the process. Sony does it a lot. It pisses a lot of people off in the industry, but it is what it is.

It's a business.
You are missing the point. They are around 20 people studio. Concrete genie is a niche game that is actually good. The only I've seen Sony doing is chasing the big money gaas and mobile and porting games to PC which runs like shit. And judging by their taste in gaas. I have no much hope for what they are doing other than factions. I love playstation because of their niche. Not because of big garbage like cod fifas and fortnite. Yes is not their games but that's the rubbish they push.
I hope I'm wrong and we don't enter on a identity crisis for playstation when thie garbage they are pushing fails

Yep, I'm sure Kena and Stray sold more than any pixel opus game ever. Sony has found more success developing those type of smaller games externally.

They sold more by a large margin I bet.

People angry about this don’t realize PO games just didn’t sell. Hardly anyone talked about their games.

Sony supporting indie games so much makes this a non issue. More so with them buying studios. I can see them buying at least one indie partner studio in the future.

Those Ueda games are nice and all but outside of internet chatter who’s really buying them? They take YEARS to make, to the point where the last game had to be finished without the lead, and to this day Ueda still has not even shown his new game. He left Japan Studios long before its closure.

Same could be said about Demons Souls. Look how that turned out. SIE dont always know what they are doing. Its not like these games were losing money. We need variety as PS.

Like I said we cant just make blockbusters, we need some smaller games and SOTN wasnt just internet chatter, it was one of the greatest games of the PS2 generation and the remake on the PS4 also got 91 metacrItic. It reviewed way better than GOT, Spiderman, Horizon and its a way better game Than those. Im not an investor, Im a video game fan. Yes I know Sony needs to make money and they are, but they can still make money making smaller games too.

Jak n Daxter didnt sell huge numbers but Im pretty sure if they made one or a remake it would sell well.

By the time Sony closed Japan studio it was running as a support studio, basically what XDev is doing in Japan now. They put out non-stop commercial and critical duds last gen, and most people that constantly bring the up didn’t pay for any of them brand new. They only get brought up when people whine about the AAA games they always run out and buy from Sony.

But they are still loved. Gravity Rush had a decent fanbase. It just got cut short. A 3rd game could of been big. Bloodborne didnt sell heaps but the next Miyazaki game or Bloodborne 2 would sell 10m easily. If the next Killzone or Resistance is made it would be big too, you can’t always judge it on the last time.

The Sony of early and mid ps3 and psp era would be on its last legs right now if all they aspired for was creative and quirky games to satisfy like the 15% of people that care.

If sony wasn’t producing games like Last of Us, God of War, Tsushima, etc. there would be a MAJOR hole in the AAA space for those type of games. Not everyone can make the type of big projects sony does, but there are tons of indie studios that can make better games than pixel opus that sony can sponsor and market.

They just haven’t proven to be a very valuable studio, i hate to say that cause i did want to see if they could grow into something more but the people at sony know better than us and they saw what they had done and it wasn’t it.

I have faith that the people at SIE know what they’re doing by this point.

Im not saying dont produce AAA games. Make as many as you want, I love them but I also love the smaller games.
The smaller games is what kept PS alive and strong during the PS3 era. Almost every month they had a game coming out, thats what made the PS live and catch up to Xbox 360. That and the big titles from Naughty Dog.
Nintendo is smashing it with smaller games, no reason we cant have them too.

Im not saying your wrong, Im saying as a fan, I want these smaller games too. If you dont want these games good for you, your not getting them now anyway. But I want these games, Im losing out. Its just sad too see. And its one of reasons Japan doesnt care about PS as much anymore, they like smaller niche titles.

also, i could understand if PixelOpus was some sort of AA machine, just churning out games like concrete genie every 2 years, but them taking 4 years to put out another game is naughty dog levels of development time. There is not a major sony studio taking that long inbetween releases to put out games.

Sony is probably getting fed up of these smaller studios just not pulling their weight making much smaller lower budget games while their big studies have to be relied on to carry the line up.

I would honestly be sid eyeing the hell out of Bend right now also but they have a much longer and richer history with playstation. Thats the biggest difference between pixelopus and some other studios, they don’t have seniority or critical acclaim to save them.

I think my issue isnt so much Pixel, but just overall the smaller games becoming less and less.

If bend fails again, they should get the cut. Evolution did and so did Japan Studios. Both have been with Sony for time and had better games recently.

PS was all about giving chances to studios. Look at Guerilla and Sucker punch, they werent top tier sellers till Horizon and Ghost of Tsushima. Sony doesnt have to be as cut throat

You guys are still stuck on Japan studios “closure” years later? If all those veterans there had actually released anything worthwhile they would’ve been saved, instead they released Knack and let team asobo release astrobot and make a better game than they’ve done in years!

Because they made some great games. So they make a dud like Knack, doesnt mean they are horrible. Gravity Rush reviewed as good as Ghost of Tsushima and probably a hell alot cheaper.
Maybe you guys werent around for the PS3 era but Japan studios made PS3 fun and there was always games coming out for PS3, small and big

If really it was a < 20 people team, then I'm sure some talent can move to the more robust studios.

I guess their new project was faltering and it was time.

Smaller games and indies can come from third parties.

Or we can also make smaller games too. PS made some great small titles.
Getting it from indies and 3rd parties means those great teams can easily switch to another platform.

We need to produce more than just AAA games

Wow didn't see that coming that's really disappointing. I'm a big fan of the smaller AA games and I hope this isn't an indication of Sony moving away from that sort of thing.

Someone that feels the same As me, thank you lol.

I think Sony Has moved away from it unfortunately

Smaller conceptual ideas might be better off with finding upstarts and publishing their games or xdev efforts etc…. Even if they abandon those efforts with internal
studios I do not by any means interpret this as less of these types of games.

What's this rhetoric I keep seeing about Bend failing? Days Gone was a huge commerical success and the only issue Sony had with the studio was the Game Director who they got rid of, right after launch. It was Bend's upper management who turned down the sequel. Sony is clearly happy with Days Gone. It's also one one of their best selling PC games + best PC ports.

The game has been very lucrative for playstation. So we can nip this in the bud, about wanting Bend to get axed. Very talented studio and their tech for Days Gone was quite impressive.

Exactly.
Lets hope it doesnt end up like Xbox did with Halo, Gears and Forza chasing.
I miss the smaller titles.

Japan studios had talented people. People acting like Xbox fans just ignoring the issues.

Another example:

Acquire from Japan Studios, Helped make Tenchu, Way of the Samurai games. Classic PS games. Then they made Rain, wasnt a huge blockbuster but was a decent game. I bought it and enjoyed it.
Fired from PS. Now making Octopath Traveler 1-2 which are Squares best new JRPG. = Mistake

Demons Souls and Bloodborne, not the best selling games compared to Horizon, but look at Elden Ring now and they were awesome games.

Letting Ueda go will be another mistake just like letting Team Grvaity go. They made 80-91 metacritic reviewed games. Great games

Sony is making a mistake chasing just big titles fromt here 1st party

I dont care how it sold, it played like ass compared to other 1st party games. Yeah it had some good bits and the story was told decently/ presentation, graphics, music but it wasnt amazing gameplay wise especially against human enemies. Look at the reviews. It was the only 1st party game I couldnt finish last gen.

They spent years making that game and it just wasnt good. Like I said, Im not an investor, Im a gamer. It sold better than Demons Souls and bloodborne, doesnt make it better than them

No idea who this is.. they were a PlayStation studio?
Yes. They were a small students team that got incubated by Sony San Mateo Studio (trying to repeat the success of Santa Monica incubating the Journey team in their office) and published them their first (small and experimental) game Entwined (Metacritic of 59), becoming a PlayStation Studios team. They did grew a bit and made Concrete Genie (MC of 75), also a small and experimental niche game but a bit more traditional and good looking.

They were now making an Unreal Engine 5 game in collaboration with Sony Pictures Animation, since Sony as corporation wants to see their different divisions collaborating and helping each other more fruquently.

Sony said that "regularly evaluates its portfolio and the status of studio projects to ensure they meet the organization’s short and long-term strategic objectives. As part of a recent review process, it has been decided that PixelOpus will close on June 2nd". So pretty likely their previous games weren't successful enough, the current project didn't look good enough and considered that it was a better idea to shut down the studio.

What's this rhetoric I keep seeing about Bend failing? I think that the fact that Sony is making a movie, or also including it in the PS5 PlayStation Collection that highlighted some of the best PS4 games, also shows that Sony is happy with Days Gone.
