Realistically, what do you guys think the future of Xbox will be?

We all know Xbox has fallen on hard times...especially this gen. In 10 years, Phil has spent billions and billions and has little to show for it. And now that their "strategy" of cloud gaming and releasing their IP everywhere has become clear, what do you think their future portends?

IMO, business as usual. Another gen, still some exclusives, but those will become less. They will treat Xbox consoles like the Microsoft Surface, in that they expect it to always be a small part of the overall pie and rely heavily on software and services.

I don't even know if we will have game consoles in general anymore in the next 10-15 years.

They will release a new console and sell between 40 and 50 M if they improve their first party. Otherwise they will be closer to OG Xbox numbers. After that who know if consoles or PC gaming will still be a thing. We are talking about end of 10th generation

So around 2036/38

It's option 3: they keep releasing games for PC but provide extra support and optimizations for an established set of PC specs running windows.

E.g. if they were releasing their "platform" today, they'd probably be making special optimizations for handhelds with the Z1 Extreme / 7840U like the ROG Ally and Legion Go.

I think they will ditch the console BUT pivot to 3rd party PC “official Xbox” builds which will be thier console along with streaming sticks and handheld, everything backed by a subscrption service, and of course 3rd party publisher approach for games. The question on my mind is when this could occur - maybe generation after next, but also maybe the upcoming one.

They purchased 3rd party megapubs with illegitimate monopoly money and have been consumed by their purchases. Hilariously, this is the most fitting end for an incompetent Phil Spencer and his tanking Xbox biz. They'll find a humble home servicing PlayStation players.

They're done done. Ideally they leave gaming entirely within 10 years.

They release a next gen system but without exclusives and it flops hard. I'm talking NEC PC-FX levels of failure. Then "Xbox" done and Microsoft continues as a third party with an online storefront.

Oh yeah, there's a portable in there too somewhere, whipdy fricken doo.

They will become 3rd-party publisher.
Xbox hardware will become PC standard with a MS seal and Windows Xbox themed build by 3rd-parties.
Some of these PC hardware will be made by Microsoft like Surface is.

It's gonna be interested if these hardwares can run Steam side-loaded
Then the next Xbox will have 1st party PS games available
Wonder what sony would do

Xbox PC machine will definitively run Steam... after all it will be running a more standard Windows.
You won't even need a side-load... you will just download the Steam app like you do on Windows.

I think that in the long term they'll do a Sega. But I think that in their case, very slowly and step by step. I think their next step will be to announce more batches of old ports of MS games for PS and Nintendo and more games day one on multiple consoles, later to normalize to release all their games day one everywhere.

Regarding hardware, I think in a couple of years (2026) they'll release a PC handheld using Windows and their PC store, pretty likely build by some 3rd party manufacturer like Asus or so. And then a couple years later (2028) a way more powerful home console shaped PC, also running Windows and their PC store.

I think they'll do let's say their 'Steam machines' concept but running Windows, this time also using onoo both home console and portable console shaped PCs. They'll try to put Windows in the PC handheld/home consoles of all the brands.

I also think progressively they'll also move away games from being day one on the normal GP tier, at least their own best selling ones. They would be only in the most expensive tier during a few years, and later they'll stop putting them day one even in the most expensive tier.

I also think they'll to expand several of their IPs to mobile via spinoffs when they see fit via King, starting with the Activision Blizzard ones.

Sony needs to stop sleeping with the competition
