"As we assured you before with our plans to bring select titles to PC, our efforts beyond console in no way diminish our commitment to the PlayStation community"

Laugh

Our mobile gaming efforts will be similarly additive, providing more ways for more people to engage with our content, and striving to reach new audiences unfamiliar with PlayStation and our games. Savage Game Studios is joining a newly created PlayStation Studios Mobile Division, which will operate independently from our console development and focus on innovative, on-the-go experiences based on new and existing PlayStation IP.

Sounds like Business as usual?

PlayStation Mobile division being defined as its own thing here means that there will be more mobile related purchases.

So when Sony buys Square Enix the low budget retro rpgs they release on switch will probably move to mobile devices.

Yea just played Trials of Mana which came to mobile, it was actually really good. Same with Monster hunter stories.

If they can make more of that, im all for it.

I don't know who Savage Game Studios is, but I see they have offices in Helsinki and Berlin, which are (with Barcelona) probably the cities with probably the biggest pool of mobile gamedev talent and studios in the world.

Edit: I see their CEO is Michail Katkoff (Founder of Deconstructor of Fun, did work in the past in Digital Cholate like me, but in the Helsinki office, whose bosses after it went to create Supercell) and have as VC Play Ventures, who also have former Digital Chocolate employees (their CEO was my direct former boss in my studio).

They have many people, like their game director who came from Wargaming and are (or were, it's pretty common to cancel games under development in mobile gaming) working on a shooter:
https://venturebeat.com/games/savage-game-studios-raises-4-4-million-for-mobile-shooter-game/

I see in LinkedIn they also have former Supercell, King, Rovio, Kabam, Wooga, Yager, Glu, Rockstar, Ubisoft, IGG employees. As an example, their art director did work for 10 years at Rockstar.

Another lame decision from Jimbo and Hermen

It's becoming a trend a this point

Yes, Sony said they will make more mobile games, more PC ports of old games and more PS exclusive games than before. And that to do so they'll grow their internal studios and buy new ones plus they'll continue signing 3rd party exclusives.

Nothing new.

I mean this is announcement is “who cares” until they release some Pokémon GO level success.
I wonder if Sony will move the mobile gaming studios and publishers they have under Sony Music to this new PlayStation Studios Mobile Division. As an example early this year they bought Lasengle (known as Delightworks game division before being sold to Sony) under Aniplex.

That company has as president Yoshinori Ono (former guy in charge of Street Fighter) and developed Fate/Grand Order, which generated to them a Billion per year and has been a worldwide top 10 top grossing mobile game for years, sometimes even above Pokemon Go.

Examples:

Mobile market is the biggest moneymaker in the industry. We are seeing a bigger push into it from major game developers now.

None of these purchase announcements need to line up with anything. They’re not made to “out hype” the previous acquisition or announcements made days earlier by a competitor.

If anything it’s meant to hype investors. Sony investing more into mobile means $$$

I'm happy!

As I have been saying, they should have moved more aggressively on mobile eons ago -- way before moving on to PC and, to an extent, live-service GaaS.

Better late than never though. They gotta acquire at least 3 more mobile studios, however. Get 200-300 active mobile developers and make lots of games.

Sony still make best console, but i've no excitement for their 1st party, to me right now Nintendo is more excting, their consoles sucks, but if only Nintendo make a good console, to me they will become superior than Sony. First time i feel that way since Sfamicom.

I know what i really hope Nintendo will make great console, powerful enough to handle all 3rd party, then Sony and MS can sucks each others dicks over subscriptions/mobiles/PC porting and all the other BS.

Nintendo has subscription service for ROMs bruh. Are you sure that’s what you want? Nintendo is the worst of them all when it comes to ripping off consumers.

That is nice.

Sony showed they had 2 games being released this FY for mobile... I wonder which games are these? Maybe it is only for Japan?
That is the second time PlayStation ventures in mobile... the first time it not worked very well because they lacked a ecosystem... the games releases had no integration with PSN or trophies... it was something that made me avoid it too.

Now if this time they do integrate with PSN and the games have trophies I'm all good to give it a try.
But that is the key point it needs to be fully integrated in the PlayStation ecosystem.

Oh I probably won’t give any of it a try. Mobile and handheld gaming is something I don’t do and won’t ever. Not interested.

But just looking at their new direction as a business… They’ve shown interest in the past when they made psp and vita. Now the industry has evolved to favor mobile over gaming handhelds and will continue to do so. Sony wants the money of those gamers.

PlayStation means more than a console now. It’s a brand and a software brand too and it’s taken a long time for them to define that but here we are. They want everyone to buy their games.

To spend like $10B or more to acquire a corporation with several thousands of employees isn't like to buy a bag of chips. It may require a lot of paperwork and negotiation to have everything ready, sometimes take years.

They line up with Sony's strategy that they already announced. They will focus on their console business and they will make more console exclusives than ever before by increasing existing internal development teams, buying more and signing 2nd and 3rd party exclusives. And as secondary business they'll also grow their game subs, VR, a few PC ports of old games per year, mobile gaming and movies/tv shows.

Regarding their mobile gaming specific strategy, the idea is to acquire or partner expecienced, estabished and successful mobile gaming talent to build their internal PS Studios mobile division where in addition to publish their own games they'd also publish externally developed games. And to do it being faithful to PS Studios values:

PlayStation Mobile is outside PSP/Vita business.
They published in the past around 600 games with PlayStation Mobile when PSP/Vita was being sold... around PS3 era.

It just not paid off at time but it lacked all the integration with PSN and shocking trophies.... it was one of the big asks in the official PlayStation whilst site... people wanted trophies in their Mobile games.

Now they will try Mobile again.
It is a different market from Nintendo Switch for example... and it was different from PSP/Vita too.

Gaming market is kind of subdivided: Consoles, PC, Portables and Mobiles.

Never heard of Savage Game Studios until today but seeing as how they're a mobile game development studio and I don't give two shits about mobile gaming, that explains it. lol

Not what I was hoping Sony's next acquisition to be but not surprised either. Sony is going in the same direction as Microsoft but at a much slower pace.

Does anyone know what games they have previously worked on? I mean the founders or other team members, because the studio itself is very new.

Really not much I can say otherwise as I don't care much for mobile outside of a handful of intriguing Apple Arcade games.

@Yurinka So I take it this purchase is like a soft counter to MS acquiring King, which for MS was (as part of a package deal) a hard counter to Sony acquiring Lasengle.

Ultimately if it means more recurring revenue for 1P and co-developed 3P content with 1P IP at AAA/AA production levels for PlayStation consoles then I'm for it from a business perspective. Again very few mobile games I would actually care to play but some of Sony's legacy IP might be a good fit for mobile devices like Parappa/UmJammer, and in those cases those games could also come to PS through PS+ for console owners.

Now if they make a new smartphone with PS4-level performance and built-in button controls and thumbsticks, that would be an optimal device for mobile gaming and even playing native PS4 games on the go. So that dream can still happen, it would just involve mobile more directly. It'd be like a redo of Xperia Play, only this time good & successful 😁

Please read again these posts, I explained where they did work before and SIE's strategy for mobile gaming:

Please notice that strategy and acquisition is for SIE/PS Studios only. Sony has more mobile (and even console) gaming development and publishing teams like Lasengle or Aniplex but are under Sony Music, other division where they also even make anime.

I don't get why Sony doesn't put all their gaming stuff under their division, all their cinema and animation stuff under Sony Pictures and all their music stuff under Sony Music.

Ultimately if it means more recurring revenue for 1P and co-developed 3P content with 1P IP at AAA/AA production levels for PlayStation consoles then I'm for it from a business perspective.
Yes, this is the idea: SIE will continue focusing on console as their main business, and will grow in all its related console areas, but also will expand their related secondary businesses like mobile gaming, a few PC ports of old games per year and movies+tv shows to produce extra revenue and profit (that later will be reinvested in growing SIE, mostly on console games), plus to expand the fanbase of their IPs in other platforms/markets/countries/demographics.

Their main idea is to milk this new fanbase mainly in these other markets, but if these new fans want to play the new (main) games of these IPs or other exclusives they'll have to buy a PS console.

So directly and indirectly these secondary businesses (same goes with PS Plus or PSVR) make money that later gets reinvested on new AAA PS only games and provide them extra fans, and a part of them later may end buying thier console hardware and games because PS consoles are the only place with all their games and on launch day.
