So Phil Spencer was clearly fearmongering about google and facebook right?

When they purchased Activision Blizzard phil Spencer did this whole song and dance about how companies outside of gaming could potentially hurt gaming. For example he explained how google, facebook, amazon and big tech could buy companies and destroy them and what they mean for gamers.

Yet, it all appears that Stadia is winding down it’s streaming game service according to this new email.



Also, it looks like facebook/meta is not interested in traditional game companies, they are losing billions on VR and have only been going after VR game companies which have all been rightfully blocked by FTC.



So what were these big companies that were gonna come in and buy up all the big 3rd party publishers? The only behemoth tech company i see buying publishers is Microsoft themselves. It’s like they positioned themselves as the good guys (hey guys here’s free games) so that people won’t acknowledge such an hostile form of western capitalism at play. Microsoft are literally buying good will just so they can aggressively take more ownership over the market.

There is no big tech boogeyman aside of the one sitting in front of our faces telling us there is.

It was definitely a reach on MS's part. I mean look at how quickly Google de-focused Stadia when MS announced they were buying Zenimax. I imagine the ABK announcement may've made one of the other big tech companies reconsider a forward push, internally anyway.

At this point though they couldn't use the fear of other big tech companies as a way to curry favor with gamers to be chill about yet another massive gaming acquisition, considering no one else has made any on MS's level outside of arguably Sony with Bungie, but that's less than half of even Zenimax, let alone ABK.

Apple's been focusing on partnering with indie teams and securing Apple Arcade exclusives like Fantasian. Amazon haven't really done too much with Luna, but they do have a (single) game out in Lost World (which I think was just a translation effort?). Embracer Group purchased some SE Western studios recently but they were for pocket change. Tencent hasn't made any studio acquisitions in a while and no notable stock investments AFAIK. Google's focusing on Stadia as a backend suite of cloud streaming tools for clients.

So really the only companies that look most likely to buy up another big publisher or two are Microsoft and Sony, and Microsoft has their work cut for them refitting big parts of ABK, integrating them and Zenimax, and actually getting content development stabilized and proving some results with the money they've spent. That kind of basically leaves the door open for Sony, and we already know what those rumors are.

And I believe actually that Phil thinks Xbox is bigger and more valuable than it actually is. He also tried to downplay PS while at it.

Even if stadia isn’t completely shuttering, they’ve already announced they are winding down from being a all out game distribution service last year. We already know The Quarry and High on Life were supposed to be stadia exclusives. That doesn’t sound like the company that is looking to buy up major publishers for billions and billlions of dollars

Yes it was 100% BS. Microsoft is the Big Tech we should be scared of but they have so many fanboys on the internet it's impossible to criticize them. The enemy is always Google, Facebook, Apple or Tencent.

Man, I'm not even sure. Looks like Phil could buy half of this industry and Sony and Nintendo would still beat them in mindshare and overall sales. It's more than how many studios you bought or how much money you have. MS was always the guy on the block flashing the most benjamins, yet always going home drunk without the girl.

Phil's statement was ironically applicable to Microsoft : they're a big tech company who likes to gobble up other companies to gain market share in areas they have nothing to show for.

I don't know how good he is at other things, but he's the best at selling his fish. Some people think Game Pass is dominating gaming or is concenced about a (fantasy) monopoly that he's going to create with the acquisitions he did.

He's great a making his products and services look good and making people think they are on fire. When it isn't the case at all.

They're blocking Facebook's acquisitions because they've successfully cornered the VR market w/ both hardware and their store.

New markets are particularly susceptible to monopolies.

And the very same thing is likely to happen when you willingly spend over 80 billion dollars in a matter of 3 years on gaming and promise to continue.

Disney bought the entire film and tv division of Fox for less money and this was only one acquisition by microsoft not the 7 others.
