PS3 was expensive and with worse multiplatform. Remember what saved them? The opposite of releasing their games on pc.
These companies are relying a lot on their analysists and advisers. And their current analysists (which they choose depending on their "inclusivity" first) are the ones who advise them to make games like Concord, to make their games available on steam and maybe even other competing consoles etc

A SIGNIFICANT price cut. Without that, no one would have noticed the exclusives Those came later.

Put a PS5 Digital at 300 USD and it would sell at PS2 levels. In fact, if they do it by the time GTAVI releases they would kill it. Sony can easily recoup that money with online fees and shark cards from GTAVI.

lmao imagine if they started porting all their games to PC during PS3 gen.
You can't make an expensive console and at the same time releasing less exclusives and porting the existing library to PC.

It’s a drought of big games alright.

Glad Concord / Until Dawn Remake are big flops, and their PC releases are flopping big time. They thought they could cruise on these? And then Ghost of Yotei, people were so hyped for the sequel and they had to go and announce that, basically killing the hype and having to restart from scratch because people have no emotional connection to what they showed.

PlayStation is a mess and they are lucky Xbox failed so hard the first half of the gen, otherwise they would get absolutely merked right now.

No, I don't agree with your conclusion. I think softer sales can still be attributed to the cost of the PS5 in general rather than some misguided belief that PC ports that to your own admission aren't needle movers on PC.

Uh...higher cost of the system IS one of the reasons we've been speculating FY targets could get missed. The problem is you're an all-or-nothing and only want to attribute a forecast miss to one factor.

The rest of us acknowledge it can be multiple reasons. Price increase is one of them; the PC ports potentially another (keep in mind this also includes all the 3P games that used to be defacto timed or full console exclusives last gen, now going Steam Day 1 which compounds on SIE porting many of their own games either Day 1 or in 1-2 years to Steam this gen).

I'm not. I don't know what difference that makes to demand.

Cerny should have spoken raw specs and let the games speak for themselves. Comparing a remaster of a PS4 game with the pro specs was dumb. Showing of ratchet and trying to convince people it looks fuzzy in the distance, despite it looking like a Pixar film, is dumb. Saying the SSD runs faster, when it's already lightning speed, is dumb.

I am still completely amazed that SIE haven't let Cerny do a Road to PS5 Pro presentation. Not only is that type of thing Cerny's strong suit, it's exactly what they needed to do to upsell the Pro.

The gamers in the market for a PS5 Pro are the same who love hearing all the numbers with new Nvidia & AMD GPUs. They see those numbers and data models and start lining up their money to preorder. Why there hasn't been an in-depth technical presentation for the Pro yet is a complete mystery.

But if preorders are softer than expected...welp there's your reason why. SIE, your target demographic for the PS5 Pro want as many technical details possible, they want a Road to PS5 Pro. Give them what they want, it isn't hard.

You're both right. If Sony ported all their PS3 exclusives to PC that gen (specifically, to Steam) then no matter the price, they wouldn't have recovered at the end of the gen as they managed to. We already have proof of this with the Series X and S.

On the other hand, a big price cut DID help push PS3 sales, alongside getting multiplats at parity with 360. Them getting the marketing deal with GTAV plus the bundle near the end of the gen cemented the resurgence, but it WAS the combination of on-par multiplats and exclusive games that helped PS3 sustain growing momentum between the 2009 price cut and GTAV's reveal/release.

Right now Sony has very few true exclusives (being a console exclusive isn't good enough considering the crossover that exists today between console & PC gaming demographics) AND they have hardware relatively expensive for this point of the generation. With those factors plus increased competition from PC, mobile and Nintendo, missing FY targets of 18 million shouldn't be too surprising to them or us.

LOL... ban bet?
Sure. The last ban bet I made was that concord would flop. I would love to know which poster I made that bet with

Any mods know?
Not really. The market is changing due to AI upscaling. People used to car about bits and polygons before tflops and its changing again now that consoles will have AI upscaling.
Source? Or is this tales from your arse? AI upscaling isn't a raw output number, it's a plaster/bandaid over an open, infected wound.
I'll take your word for it.
Now yer lernin
You clearly don't know BOM very well. The entire industry is telling you that they're not able to bring the cost of manufacturing down like they used to.
Because their manufacturing processes are laughably unproductive. Besides, why should I feel sorry for Sony when they chose their specs and ignored the market?
Convenient.
Autistic.
The Switch and PS5 are not the same. The games they sell are not the same.
It's almost like you're starting to understand. One sells games in their 10+ millions with a small budget, the other has to bundle the shit out of their games and flog them for a tenner just to move numbers.
Yes, let the TLOU remaster run on PS3... Would love to see it.
The original ran on PS3. Are you well?

In my opinion, even if you ignore the ports on the PC, the PS5 PRO is a big mistake.

The PS5 FAT suffered greatly in sales due to covid shortages and scalpers, and it was also hit by inflation and the economic downturn (because some people allowed one big dictatorial country to do what it does).

We have very few new quality games being made for the PS5 FAT, many continued to be released on PS4, and the general state of the industry is very sick, so it can't offer the level of third-party that it did in the PS4 days, it's more and more focused on F2P and services.

Internal studio exclusives could help here, but they are also in crisis and have suffered from GAAS policies and PC ports...

And yet, those 'fanboys' who hate Sony and want them to fail, keep getting it right. Funny that.
Yes, they are just after half of the generation and already became the top grossing generation and more profitable than all the previous ones combined. What a failure, Sony execs must be crying! xDD

Obviously it's speculation based on observation.

Do you hear anyone talking about bits and polygon counts today?

What you fundamentally don't understand is that the power of ai upscaling will change dynamically with time, but what it does is it negates "native performance" in a lot of ways.

Tell me why no one talks about bits and polygon counts. Which were all that mattered back in the day. Marketing changes when old marketing terms become irrelevant. Tflops don't mean what they used to already. We had the PS5 that was pretty significantly below the XSX match its performance despite the lower Tflop number. You have games that are in 4K that look worse than games that are 1440p.

Resolution =/= Fidelity or IQ.

I don't think anyone denies that Nintendo IP have more staying power and popularity than Sony IP.

Isn't the first half of the generation meant to maximize the install base, so the big harvest of profits comes in the second half?

I guess we won't be able to see the whole picture for a while but I'm a big fan of trying to maximize the install base and proliferate console gaming first and then profiting later...

Read your own graph. Fewer sales than PS4, a disastrous past two years almost half of the start of the gen. PS4 graph shows improvement YoY except the last year which is normal.
PS5 has shown stagnation with inflated numbers through COVID, then a monumental drop-off, followed by stagnation.

If this gen is so profitable for Sony, does it not give you pause as to why they haven't decreased the price of PS5? Some saying they can't, when obviously they can, unless this graph is bollocks.

The current sales and demand of PS5 mid-gen is equal to the final year of PS4. But sure, everything is hunky dory.

The absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

I'll level with you, AI upscaling is corporate bollocks and buzz words. It's blast processing, the power of the cloud, bets tested In the future, the power of the cell, it's the same old shite. It adds nothing to the quality of games.

Have I ever told you that games are the platform and that plastic boxes are dying?
If all your games fail, what do you have left then?

Tell steam that their games are the platform... Cause they hardly make any.

Nintendo most of all have the strongest, longest lasting IPs and still recognize how important making and selling your own hardware is...

You do realize without plastics boxes there is no platform for Sony right? Which is why them throwing the PS5 under the bus before it was even released made no sense.

This was literally their generation to finally topple the PS2, yes COVID threw a wrench in that but it also gave more them momentum and demand and they have squandered it every step of the way.

At the rate they are going we will look back at them as we now do with Blackberry phones.

You better hope all your games don't fail because the ice cube that is your plastic box... is melting. PlayStation seems better prepared for the games as the platform future than most.
Tell steam that their games are the platform... Cause they hardly make any.
Steam is a free piece of software, not an expensive plastic box. It too will struggle as more and more gamers flood into fewer and fewer games.

Selling hardware to children and families brings certain advantages with it. PlayStation and XBox are going to have to deal with this issue before Nintendo does certainly.
