First spotted by Gamerant, the patent application from Sony centers around the convergence of two prominent hardware offerings: the DualSense controller, a hallmark of the PS5, and the highly anticipated Pulse Explore Earbuds, which Insider Gaming exclusively reported on and is slated for a late 2023 release. While both accessories might not seem like they could integrate together, Sony has filed a new patent that allows the recharging of earbuds directly through the DualSense controller.

Within the patent’s technical framework, the DualSense controller is equipped with precision-engineered slots expressly tailored for the secure housing and seamless charging, pairing, and synchronization of the Pulse Explore earbuds. Notably, the design appears optimized for compatibility exclusively with Pulse Explore earbuds, rendering the offering relatively specialized.

However, this innovation presents an exciting prospect. These earbuds may have the capacity to replace the inbuilt speaker box of the controller, thus offering the potential for a notably enhanced auditory experience.

Leveraging the Pulse Explore’s capabilities in lossless audio transmission with minimal latency, users can anticipate superior audio quality when compared to other wireless headphones and earbuds, too. The patent’s accompanying visual representations suggest an ongoing exploration by Sony into the optimal placement of these earbud slots, indicating the company’s commitment to refining this groundbreaking feature.

It’s important to remember that just because a patent was filed, it does not mean we will see these products any time soon… If at all. My one thought is how much would this controller cost and would it include the Pulse Explore Earbuds?

It's frustrating that Sony makes some of the best wireless headphones (WH-1000XM series), and some of the best wireless earbuds (WF-1000XM series), and neither one works with the Playstation 5. There's no way I'm going to buy separate expensive headphones just for PS5.

I guess Sony just considers Bluetooth latency inappropriate for gaming. I don’t agree with that opinion, and would like the option to use these.

@flaccidsnake Lost my quote, lol

Bluetooth has a limited bandwidth pool, and the controllers use bluetooth, so to avoid causing controller latency, the best answer is to use something else for audio.

Also, the Sony wireless headsets and earbuds support spatial audio which greatly increases the need for bandwidth over wireless.

Yee, this came up in the last thread. I regularly use Bluetooth for gaming, and have a fine experience. I don’t see anything wrong with it. An audiophile might recoil in disgust and slap me, I don’t know, lol.

But I would like the option to use the Sony headset I have on the PS. Let me decide if it warrants an upgrade to expensive, proprietary headsets I won’t use anywhere else.

Read somewhere that you can use it on PS5, but you must buy some compatible 3rd party Bluetooth USB stick then pair it with earbuds WF series

Get a cheap USB Bluetooth dongle, put it in a PC or Mac, connect the headphones to it, then move the dongle to the PS5.

I have no problem with the sound quality, but the delay with the bose headset I have makes it unbearable.

Eitherway, you can use the TV's bluetooth connection to get the audio to your bluetooth headset.

Hey, it’s Sony doing something for technical reasons the average pleb doesn’t get, so it HAS to be bad, right?

Either way you can use another Bluetooth output on your TV.

There are good reasons why every gaming headset comes with a dongle... Even for movies most Bluetooth headsets have too much lag (that was the case a few years back, it might have changed).

Bluetooth is funny that way.

If you have gear on the newer standards, like BT 5 and BT 6, most of the problems have been solved, but BT 5 and BT 6 chips are more expensive, so a lot of consumer-grade Bluetooth headsets and speakers are still using BT 3 chipsets.

I had a few different pairs of BT 3 and BT 4 headphones, and they all had issues. For Fathers’ Day a few years ago I got a pair of AudioTechnica Bluetooth headphones that are BT 5, and the difference is insane in quality and latency. They even support lossless audio without lag. Only thing is, those are a lot more expensive than most BT sets people have, and the glut of cheap low-end BT gear really sullies the name of the technology.

Keep in mind, the Switch has so little Bluetooth bandwidth that it limits the system to addressing 2 controllers and only gives mid-level audio bandwidth at the same time if you use BT audio!
