There’s not much information on the internet about the SG4150P processor, and while there’s been some speculation that it’s a Snapdragon 662 chip from 2019, the model number shows up in security bulletins starting in early 2023. I can’t find any mention of it before then, suggesting it’s a newer processor… possibly one of Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon G1 or G2 series processors designed for handheld gaming devices.

I’ve also seen some reports indicating that the Portal features Qualcomm Adreno 610 graphics.

All of which is to say, that this is most likely a budget chip that doesn’t pack a lot of horsepower, because it doesn’t really need much. Since the Portal is designed to stream games from a PlayStation 5 using Sony’s Remote Play service, it’s actually the PS5 that does all the heavy lifting. All the Portal needs are chips that are sufficient to handle the data connection, controller input, and audio and video output

Early reports had indicated that the Portal’s operating system is Android-based, and now that it’s shipping, there seems to be some evidence that Android platform tools like fastboot work with the device. That could provide a pathway for hackers to find ways to load third-party apps or games, root the device, or even install custom ROMs. But it’s unclear how well the SG4150P processor will be able to handle anything other than the default Sony software.

of course it won't cost what they're charging. These are accessories, you don't take a loss on accessories. Plus they're being stocked by retailers so you have to figure BARE MINIMUM like 20% margin from retailer's cut

Lol of course it doesn't cost what they're charging. Accessories/peripherals is where companies make the highest profits by charging more than it costs to make. But in this case it's not like its super expensive

There's no other industry worldwide where people are constantly saying they need competition and they need to be kept in check. Haters get pissed off if they charge money for their products or if they are too successful.

The same rules don't apply to Tencent, Nintendo, Microsoft, Steam or Apple.

Thats all I heard on this forum was MS shouldn't be allowed to purchase ABK, Bethesda, etc. The government needs to stop MS bla bla bla. I get it, you're a diehard Sony fan but Sony isn't a victim here. They are doing a great job putting out fantastic games and products. And I absolutely would much rather have the BIG 3, Nintendo, Sony or MS buyout studios, publishers etc than google, amazon, tencent, embracer, apple, etc.

However if this thing really has a Snapdragon 4 Gen1 which has a 2-core Cortex A78 + 4-core Cortex A55 plus a ~250 GFLOPs GPU and 4GB RAM, then it's way too powerful for what should strictly be a streaming device. Sony could have gone with something much simpler and cheaper.
For example, the Steam Link has about the same streaming functionality as the Portal and it uses a dirt cheap SoC from Marvel with 256MB RAM and a single-core Cortex A7, which has probably 10% the performance of this Snapdragon.


I could be wrong, but my guess is if they really put this kind of processing hardware into the Portal then Sony has something more planned for the device. It can certainly do some overlay content by itself or even process its own game complement in the device.

This might lend credence to NPD/Circana classifying Portal as a console and not an accessory. Although it's still weird, because you need a PS5 to really make use of it (until that changes). So for right now it should still be tracked as an accessory IMO.

Is there a chance Sony do bring some type of Android functionality to the device and a mobile storefront connected to PS storefront & PS+ in some way? Maybe also native emulation of PS1 titles? Maybe even some form of offload processing between PS5 and PSVR2 (or future, cheaper VR headsets)?

It does have some beefy specs for something simply intended for streaming, you're right on that.

You’re also paying for R&D costs, manufacturing costs, stock costs, aggregate value costs, marketing costs, market research costs.
The price of a product goes way beyond its manufacturing And parts costs.

You’re also paying for R&D costs, manufacturing costs, stock costs, aggregate value costs, marketing costs, market research costs.
The price of a product goes way beyond its manufacturing And parts costs.

Yes that’s true but I do think the device’s Purpose is redundant in of itself. It’s really a low powered device that’ll be irrelevant in a few years its likely to have a price drop.

I didn’t say sony Cannot ask A price for the product. I get made about the 60 dollar games nintendo makes im also surprised the series x never had a price drop considering the sales figures lol. Tencent I don’t like at all. Despicable company.
