Damn their Financial Services segment has some really strong margins. I wouldn't be surprised if Sony expand into that sector more going forward, wasn't there something about them and a Japanese bank a little while ago? Can't recall the details. But yeah, with those kinds of margins (net income is almost as much as the Gaming segment but with almost 1/3 the required revenue to do so), it wouldn't surprise me.
Gaming seems to be doing well too, though. PS+ sub count dropoff is interesting, but I think most of those are lapsed accounts that likely didn't do much with their subs to begin with. That said, actual revenue and net profit from the Services segment grew, which means the new PS+ tiers (or at least PS+ Extra, which likely makes up the majority of the non Essential subs) are pulling in their weight.
Being 600K down on software sales isn't outside the realms of what was expected; there weren't any big 3P releases over the summer that I can think of outside of Saint's Row and, well, that has its issues. TLOU Part 1 Remake did pretty well, but I guess all of that combined wasn't enough to offset against what they did from July - September the previous year (although interestingly, there was no 1P software from Sony during that period last year, as I think Rift Apart came out in June, though there is longer-term sales of that and other games 1P & 3P running into FY 2021 Q2 and so forth).
But even that actually isn't particularly bad. Q2 was up over Q1 for 1P software sales, and FY 2021 Q2 1P sales can be explained in part due to continued TLOU Part 2 & Ghosts of Tsushima sales plus sales being maybe slightly artificially boosted by lockdown (it's only maybe around very late Summer 2021 into Fall 2021 where it seemed like the strictest lockdowns were starting to ease).
A Collab. Everyone knows it's a FromSoftware game, funded by Sony. And let's just say it was a Sony game, it's the only game I look forward to from FromSoftware Sony. All the test are meh to say the best.
Sony Japan helped in the development as well, particularly on the technical side. Sony did more than just fund the game.
In any case, Sony own the IP so legally Bloodborne is their game, but we can fairly say From Software are the main creative force and Sony Japan were a supporting creative source (at best) and a bigger technical assistance force on the game.
Which probably more or less matches up with Sony Japan's role with Demon's Souls, tbh.
