Sony removes 8K from PS5 box

Sony has quietly removed the "8K" logo from the PS5's packaging, even if the situation is still not entirely clear: it was noticed by some users and posted on social networks, but we don't know exactly the extent of it or when precisely it started.

The PS5 is technically capable of using 8K video output, obviously as long as you have a screen available, but this feature has practically never been used on the gaming front, and many believe that it could even amount to false advertising.

So it's above all a useful reminder on a marketing level, because when it comes to games we already struggle to achieve full 4K, let alone 8K. The issue has obviously also sparked controversy over the veracity of the feature advertised on the PS5 packaging.

First thing I thought about as well.

I was playing FFVII Rebirth, a game with completely botched upsaclling solution and a resolution that is nowhere near 4K on a 65' screen sitting right in front of it and I wasn't bothered by it at all.

8K on TVs is extremely stupid.

Screens bigger than 48 should be 8k for better pixel density.

91 PPI is really the limit.

32" for 1440p
48" for 2160p

It is all depends of the size of your TV... that is correct.
Mine is 64" that should take advantage of a 8k output in some extend.

Yesterday I was watching a movie with my wife and I could clearly see the pixel lines... I did not checked it but it was clearly running way below 4k... I bet it was 1080p.

Just the fact you ignore how close you sit in your chart already tells me you have no idea about what you talking about. Educate yourself before posting nonsense.

But as always the people most obsessed with simple metrics aren't usually the brightest and ethomaz agreeing with you is all the proof I need.

The percentage it takes from your FoV is all that should matter. That's why 8K makes sense for VR but doesn't make sense for the vast majority of flat screens and set ups. Depending on how close you sit from your TV a 40" TV can take the same percentage of your vision as 65" screen seen from a little further away.

Most digital movie theater screens to this day aren't even 4K and I don't see people complaining that they went to watch a movie in a digital screen and it sucked. Even many screens advertised as IMAX are just 2K.

People have made the simple conclusion to dismiss 8K and they're not entirely wrong, but at the end of the day it comes down to a few things. TV size, content, and upscaling.

I have a 77 inch tv and my next tv will probably be at least 83 inches if not larger.

We're not going to going to see native 8K gaming without ai upscaling, but I can tell you that 720p and even 1080p sports content leaves a lot to be desired. 4K sports are excellent, but we have a real opportunity to capture sports in 8K and we've yet to see broadcast really upgrade to fully support widespread 4K, we still have a chance to go straight to 8K here.

General upscaling will improve most movies and TVs on large screens.

AI upscaling is the answer now for higher resolutions for gaming, no reason to think that can't include 8K.

I believe the 8K was there for media playback not gaming… game seal was 4k 120.

That outputs in 4k.
It renders in 8k, supersample to 4k and send the 4k signal to TV.

There is no game outputting more than 4k because Sony capped PS5 to max 4k native resolution.

So the gaming seal 4k 120.

Just an update after some research…

PS5 can’t output 8K in neither gaming or media content right now… this option doesn’t exists in Sony’s console.

In 2020 Somy said that eventually it should allow 8k output for media content (not games) via firmware update but that never happened.

And for these with 8k TVs just play this video (even with high compression) and be amazed… play the 4k version too if you want to understand that there are indeed big differences and very noticeable in 8k TVs size.

Joke's on them. I still have the original fat PS5 box that says 8K.

So they better support 8K resolution for me to never play at 8K on my 4K TV.

IIRC it's The Touryst that renders natively at 8K60, but the PS5 still only outputs at 4K. Its HDMI encoder chip never received a firmware upgrade to support 8K output.
