Good lord.

1/10 show. I give one point for the RE4 trailer.

absolutely the worst showing by sony (or anyone really) in maybe a decade or more.
There was a nindie direct two or so years ago that had two small games nobody cared about followed by a dogshit awful Bakugan game and nothing else. It was so bad that Nintendo had to start pre-warning people about how big their directs were going to be during their announcements. This conference easily tops that one just with the VR stuff alone.

There’s a very good reason why the only game I’ve paid full pop for on Switch is RingFit Adventure.

The most expensive things next to that were $20 bargain bin carts.

I’m not paying PS5-level prices for PS3-level games.
So you don't buy Nintendo first party games because of "muh graffix"? Thats a really dogshit take but you're totally allowed to have it.

Aside from Zelda or Metroid… directs are usually horrible too. Mostly weeb shit low effort RPGs and they go nuts over it.

I have no idea why people have high hopes for these types of shows. Their objective was always to showcase smaller games who would get lost in a bigger show.

I think everyone should just wait for when Sony announces PS experience.
Showcase, not experience. PS experience is the mini E3 that Sony did in the fall a few years back in Vegas, which would be nice tbf.

the last one was fantastic and we were expectiong more of the same?

sony needs to differntiate a show for indies/ and PSVR.

No one goes into a Nindie direct thinking anything will come of it, but a real Nintendo Direct surely will deliver.

This State of Play should have been called something else.

Just an issue of setting expectations really.

They expected Mikami to show up at the State of Play just like Rick Rude did at Nitro.

They did said it was going to be VR titles there. The problem is not Sony, is Internet personalities saying they are insiders and that the show was going to be filled with surprises…

It’s called state of play because of play state(tion)

sure that's true, how many bums were claiming metal gear solid was going to show? Even I fell for it, if only because the last one had Ishin remake, Rise of the Ronin, and other surprise hits.

there wqas a huge disconnect here.

Never trust those people!! Always have low expectations then you will be surprised.

But if we are being logical, Sony does have tons of projects, but there’s a reason they have not shown anything… yet.

The year is still on the beginning and since thr pandemic is over things will now have a more defined timeframe

That was awesome back in the day. People were like WTF until they realized Raw was taped and Nitro was live. lmao

The last two State of Plays were real good. Last September and Last June if I remember correctly. But Sony didn't have a Showcase last year so it makes sense. This year, they will.

Where it’s at.

No, I skip their games because I played more than enough Mario and Zelda in the fucking 1980s and they’ve only dumbed down and lobotomized their games since.

Nintendo makes games for children. Simplistic, dull and easy. Pure pablum. I wouldn’t buy their flagship stuff if it was on PS5 and outshone everything else graphically.

Sorry you’re too insecure and mentally stunted to see that!

They had some delays with the pandemic, but the timeframes are clear. If they don't announce more first party games isn't because of having their timeframe defined or not, it's because since several years ago they prioritize to market the stuff (1st, 2nd, 3rd, indies, VR, services, hardware, accesories...) to be released in the next few months.

Regarding first party, they announce their stuff when it's like a year or a year and a half maximum with only a handful exceptions.

Congrats on your garbage tier taste then, I guess.

I do agree they prioritized in having shorter time between announcements and releases, that doesn’t mean they cannot plan a show filled with surprises to engage their fanbase and capture future buyers.

If they want, they can announce all the exclusives and big AAA games they have for the rest of the generation in a single event because they are under development, or even to make al least a CG teaser of games that still aren't under development, as MS did.

But this is a bad idea for several reasons:
  • They would run out of big announcements for the rest of the generation, so people would complain even more than now about the lack of big announcements
  • In terms of marketing it's better for them to spread their hype bullets around the years, and inside a year across different events combined with short term lower tier games instead of focusing all in a single event
  • They are now with record hardware, software and subscription sales, don't need to pump the hype now, they can wait and focus instead on marketing know PSVR2 and that PS5 consoles are in stock
  • To focus the hype on games that will be released in the short term, let's say to be released on the next 6 to 12 months helps giving extra attention and sales to more games: not only top tier ones: smaller 1st party ones like VR ones, indies or 3rd party AA/AAA with marketing deal or temporal console exclusivity. These games would sell less if Sony focuses instead on long term games
  • To announce games too early set some expectations in terms of visuals showing a vertical slice that in many cases for many reasons later the final games can't achive on retail consoles. It's better to wait to show the games when almost completed, around a year or less before its release
  • To announce release dates too early is a bad idea because players and investors realize that games get delayed so often and is a bad pr move and puts too much pressure on devs. It's better to wait to announce release date once it's on beta and they basicallly only have to do tweaks, bugfixing, PR and marketing
  • Sony's current strategy of focusing on marketing short term games it's the best performing one for the console makers. Nintendo and Sony are breaking records with this strategy. So wouldn't make sense to change it a lot
  • Sony has been (and will continue) growing their internal teams, acquiring new ones and signing more 3rd party deals than ever before. Meaning, the amount of big releases for the short term will keep increasing. Meaning that they'll need to market more short term releases and will have less space to market long term releases
So yes, they may make an exception and make a show announcing their big games for the next 3 years or beyond, but I think it won't happen. I think they'll focus on announcing and showing their games for the next year or year and a half, so 2023 and (mostly H1) 2024 games with maybe only one or two exceptions that would be pretty likely H1 2025 games.

It's more likely to think they'll focus in the next 6 to 9 months (with maybe one or two big games to be released in the next 12 to 18 months as exception), so the ammount of big unannounced games there is pretty limited. So yes, as always there may be some surprises but not a lot.

I doubt they would ever do a MS type of show, people do not like it and yes I agree they do not need it. I am not saying they will show everything, what I am saying is, Sony has a track record of doing big shows with surprises, that is why most people got confused when they left E3 and didn't do PS experience. Sony focusing on State of Play is not the norm, it is the exception and it is a consequence of the pandemic, I still think they will resume to their previous timeframe / modus operandi, specially because of the Activision deal. In terms of Marketing is the only way to counter the PR moves Microsoft has been using.
