Cat game looks fun. So I can buy Stray for $30.

Or I can just upgrade to PS+ Extra for $40, play Stray, Demon’s Souls, and more.

The subscription thing, with a a day 1 game I’m not sure on buying, poses this interesting choice.

Clearly Sony wants me to subscribe, that’s why they’re offering it.

Obviously both options have pros and cons.

Thoughts?

Subscribe to PS+ for the impressive library and play Stray Day 1 then buy Stray when it's on sale for cheap.

This is what I will do. Like this I support the devs and my wallet 😀

I would go with the subscription upgrade for a year at $40 as it's simply the better deal.

Can I choose both? 😁 Both are good. Ps+ way more worth than buying, on another hand, if you wish to support developers directly, you have an option.

Personally, waiting for physical release.

I think it's important to buy games like this though.
That’s the interesting part.

The publisher and the developer already made a deal, so if/how/when the developer gets paid is unknowable for us. Meanwhile, all we know is Annapurna chose to put the game on PS Plus day 1. They want people to sub and play it that way. It’s unclear if Annapurna really wants you or I to buy the game. That’s literally why Sony isn’t putting games like God of War Ragnarok on PS Plus on day 1 - we know they want us to buy the game at launch. Basically everything Sony and Annapurna are doing here with Stray is saying “don’t buy the game, just subscribe since it’s a better value.”

Stray’s probably not a game I’ll replay frequently over the years, so losing access to it after the sub ends is a non-issue for me. If I really need to replay it years from now I can always buy it then. For now, PS Plus Extra has 2 interesting games on it that I haven’t bought - Demon’s Souls… and Stray. So while I could spend $30 on Stray and $70 on Demon’s Souls and $40 on an Extra sub as well, it’s obviously a better value to just spend $40 on the sub and get access to both games (and more) while saving save $100.

This situation will continue to happen, too.

Well considering it's a short game you are better off subscribing.

Why not subscribe to Extra for a month.

Cheaper than both options above. Enough time to finish the game.

Extra still sucks with too way too much of Ubisoft’s copy and paste throwaway software but the price of Stray at full price makes up for the difference.

If you’re interested in it why not? I wouldn’t have every played stray otherwise.

If you also want to play the rest of them games, there's just one answer.

It's not even a choice unless you are feeling like doing some charity.

I always pay the least I can to play a game, if the dev agreed to that it means they are happy with it.

When you are buying the game you are actually voting with your wallet in favor of more subscription service as it will be seen as subscription services not disrupting regular sales of games.

It depends. For a big AAA game I'd buy it in physical to have it in my collection with other games. An indie like Stray I'd only get it on PS+. If for some reason I end loving Stray then I may -or may not- buy a physical version if it ever exists.

I assume the dev will get a fair payment to compensate lost sales by include it day one there. Let's hope more than worth it for them. But just in case, if you want to make sure you you support the dev, buy it.
