TLOU 1 is definitively a remake. The issue is the "diminishing returns" of the graphics.
tlou is remake, but what we can see, bad one because it isn't looking any better then tlou 2 and tlou 2 is spinning on 4tf hardware. like people say - cash grab.
it was fast job to punch it before tlou tv series. 70$ is insult to the people, especially without multiplayer.

Exactly. Diminishing returns is the issue.

It’s a remake of a late PS3 game which should have been a launch PS4 game. Basically one generation later.

If anything the quality of the remake isn’t the issue but did it actually need a remake.

TLOU remake is definitely a remake unfortunately hampered by diminishing returns and being made too early.

The time to make a remake is not a issue but technology advance and for TLOU it has the technology advance.

You can have a Remake from one generation to another since there is evolution mechanics and gameplay for that.

But ND or Sony choose the easy… just remaster the game with pretty graphics instead to rebuild it with the new mechanics and gameplay evolution as PS5 allow it.

They are still using archaic control and gameplay design made for PS3…. They could have choose to build a remake but choose to stay cheap.

PS. Before people says I’m criticizing TLOU gameplay I was very vocal about how TLOU gameplay was sublime and evolutiva… for a PS3 game.

We are at PS5 now and gameplay again evolved a lot.

Not necessary.

Difference between them is TLOU is basically a late PS3 game which should have been a launch PS4 game.

You are not gonna see much difference when remaking a game which is only around a generation old because of diminishing returns.

It didn’t need a remake in my opinion just yet.
I agree with most of what you're saying here. And I agree that it wasn't necessary but we've already seen the big differences in visuals, I think it'll be more apparent when we play it

What gameplay improvements were you expecting?

Demons Souls remake is considered a great remake yet I personally didn’t see any improvement in gameplay. The game also had the same AI.

Dead Space remake will not have any significant change in gameplay yet no outrage over that.

RE2 remakes changes were expected cause the original was on the PS1.

exactly, remasters is basically one tier higher than re-release. remaster bumps up resolution and fps most of the time, can add little bit better shadows, pretty much it.
remake is overhaul of graphics to today's standards. sound too. can add weapons, missions too. can update controls and gameplay.
plus reimagine it is like what FF7R basically did.
Exactly!

Exactly.

A remaster is basically touch ups to resolution and frame rates. Maybe cleaning up textures. That’s about it.

A remake is much more than that. TLOU has new textures and character models for starters.

Edit: New AI too which wasn’t even present in Demons Souls remake.

I don’t consider Demon’s Souls a remake either.

I expect a remake to be a game rebuild again using the actual hardware capabilities and that includes graphics, sound, gameplay, and core mechanics.

TLOUPart1 or Demon’s Souls is not that.

A Remaster is what is called a essentially upgrade in graphics and sound with no change in others aspects.

Maybe there should be a third moniker for when the 'remade' game is neither a remaster or a remake?, the reimagined perhaps?. FF7r is neither remake or remaster, and neither is RE2 2019, due to it being significantly different from the original, not just in terms of assets. But yes I agree with most on here, that a game is a Remake, if it's assets have been remade, rather than simply upscaled, or retextured, other details such as story or perspective should remain as close to the original as possible to be considered a remake.

That could be called a reboot.

Reboot was God of War. When they used just a game's name or a character, we can say reboot. But most of these remakes use music, levels, locations, characters, story beats as it was in original.
I think most accurate would - Reimagine.

Demons Souls remake was rebuilt. The game has new Graphics, Animations and Sound.

It took advantage of the PS5s hardware capabilities.

In fact you could argue it is still remains one of the best looking games on all platforms.

The AI and Core Mechanics were kept the same to remain faithful to the original because it is a Souls game. You can’t change those in a Souls game.

So no Demons Souls is a remake and so is TLOU remake.

A remaster is something like FF8 remaster, GTA5 remaster or the HD remasters from Capcom. Just touch ups to resolution and framerate.

That sounds pretty close to a sequel

True, but you can have a reboot where elements of the original story are told but not in the exact same fashion. It occurs plenty in cinema.

A remake is when you have to rewrite a lot of the graphics engine core - i.e. like lighting, textures, FX, etc..

The gameplay CAN still be the same and be a remake.

Diablo 2 Resurrection is a REMAKE. Everything graphically has changed (because it was on a new engine) but the core gameplay is identical to the previous one.

Gameplay does not have to be changed in order for it to be a remake.

I agree with you guys' definition of 'remaster'. It's just some touch up things or added DLC bundled with the game's core. All patches included, etc..

I don't even care about the remake vs remaster definition debate. It's stupid and irrelevant to me and probably just about as dorky as debating about what's a "real RPG or not."

The reality is remake remaster whatever you want to call it, it is not naughty dogs best effort being put into this. I expect better, but maybe they're hit with budget cuts after tlou2 copies not selling as much due to sensitive "fans."

It's not Naughty Dog's best effort because it's literally being done by a side team as a side project. Their next franchise will probably have the largest budget out of any Sony game ever...

Is it a $70 effort to PS fans who have played it multiple times before? Probably not, but there's new additions which may make that price reasonable.. such as being brand new to the PC audience, as well as stuff like the accessibility modes which could open the game up to an entire new group of people who could never play it before.
