I greatly disagree. The gameplay is leaps ahead of part 1.
Nothing ground breaking happens regarding the gameplay of The Last Of Us 1, I'd argue that was the only area of the first game I didn't care for but gave a pass since I liked the story. During the PS3 gen, it was up against Dead Space, Resident Evil 5 and 6 etc and of those games, its the worst gameplay wise.
Part 2 adds prone, the movement is greatly improved and responsive, the ability's to jump, swim, swing from ropes, break windows etc The AI takes it even further with dogs that can smell you and you can loose their scent, AI hunting for you and trying to flank you, speaking to each other so when you kill one of them and they don't get replies, they start going to high alert, too many elements are beyond that of the first game.
During the PS3 generation, I can't even name 1 feature in part 1 that is this above and beyond thing compared to its peers, during last gen with Part 2...the game is in a league of its own with those gameplay elements. Part 1 wasn't even going after RE5 or 6, I'd argue it was closer to the ball park of RE4 actually. I love both games, but part 1 has no massive ground breaking element in regards to any gameplay features, its story is amazing and raw though and I think thats what many people are left with. Part 1 is trying to meet RE4, Part 2 is trying to beat Metal Gear Solid feature by feature. I wouldn't be shocked if part 3 gives the ability to move bodies and go deeper into that stealth and AI element. So....as much as I love part 1, I don't even think it can be in the conversation of ground breaking titles during the PS3 gen in terms of gameplay, in terms of narrative and story telling...I feel both games are doing what many don't dare to do and I'd agree with part 1 being ground breaking in that regard, but I don't think anyone can make a sound argument for its gameplay.
Not really expanded, they said modernised and enhanced, which can mean lots of things.
My headcanon for the moment is that they implemented the improved controls from Pt II and the dodge mechanic, but left the prone options Ellie had (Joel is a bulky boy). As for exploration, I'd guess they implemented a few new explorable areas within the main levels.
There's also DualSense stuff they could have added... haptics buzzing as you change surfaces would probably count as modernized exploration.
Apparently there were a few leaked images of The Last of Us Part I Remake before they were deleted.
Statements from the leaker:
- Images/Footage Leaker claims there's no gameplay improvements.
- Leaker says most gameplay improvements are animations.
- Leaker says the game supports VRR, 4K40 FPS (Gameplay Mode) & 4K60Fps (Dynamic Mode).
- It'll also feature an array of new accessibility options as seen in The Last of Us: Part II, additionally when Joel upgrades a weapon you'll now see him add attachments.

She doesn’t look like a crackhead grandma… she looks pretty well for 40s.
And she lives in an apocalyptic world that affect the actual look of people… I’m sure they don’t have the tools that woman’s nowdays have to take care of the skin health.
