Sony Interactive Entertainment to handle other versions.
LEGO Horizon Adventures is published by Sony Interactive Entertainment and developed by Studio Gobo and Guerrilla Games. The PlayStation 5 and PC versions of the game will be distributed by Sony Interactive Entertainment.
“We are incredibly excited to partner with Sony Interactive Entertainment to bring LEGO Horizon Adventures to a global audience on the Nintendo Switch family of systems,” said Solutions 2 GO vice president of global publishing Rob Cleva in a press release. “This partnership underscores our commitment to delivering high-quality entertainment experiences to retail consumers around the world.”

In the case of MLB, it's understandable that back in the day Sony maybe didn't want to publish themselves the MLB games on Switch and Xbox and told them to do so.

But in this case seems weird because Horizon is a Sony IP, so I thought they were going to publish it themselves on Switch. But the game also uses the Lego IP, so maybe was Lego who wanted the Switch version and Sony didn't want to publish it themselves there.

I have no idea, seems weird. When looking at their webpage, seems these folks ported and published the PS and XB versions of ARK: Survival Evolved and sold 2M copies in under two years. I see that in Moby Games that they previously worked -being credited, pretty likely there are more titles uncredited or not listed in the website- on Nintendo or Lego games before:

Seems LEGO wanted the game on Switch and so choose a publisher for it.
Same happened when MLB wanted a version of the Show in others platforms.

Looks like the Switch was just part of the deal.

This makes SIE look so weak I can't even decide where to begin. Horizon is Sony's IP, not LEGO's. If LEGO are the ones that approached SIE, then that would assume SIE had the leverage in the decision because any terms LEGO gave that were unsatisfactory could've simply gotten the deal rejected by SIE, and we'd have no LEGO Horizon game.

So either this far-fetched scenario played out, or the more likely scenario occurred where SIE came to LEGO, capitulated to LEGO's terms (which included a Switch release), and for whatever reason also capitulated publishing rights on Switch despite already having a publishing label for non-PlayStation systems.

Meaning SIE was never "forced" into taking on Switch as a platform; they wanted to. And there's already a dev quote out there suggesting as such.

Sony doesn’t do their own cart distribution its probably easier to use a 3rd party partner

Came to say this.

Distribution includes the whole process of getting the software on the physical medium, print the covers, packaging etc.

It only makes sense to make use of a third party distributor instead of setting up the whole process just for one game.

In fact it's a good sign that this case is an exception and not something we will see often in the future.

Smart also to not go digital only as Switch owners tend to buy physical.

Horizon isn't that attractive IP. LEGO would have approached Sony for Uncharted or GOW instead.
It is clear that Hulst was the one who approached LEGO.

Lego has weird hang-ups around violence and M-rated stuff, they'd never do a full on God of War game, even if the proposal involved there being zero blood.

I would also wager that the LEGO game audience probably skews younger which probably means a greater physical ratio than most releases(parents/grandparents buying for their kids)even on the Switch. Adult/older LEGO fans are probably also more likely to buy physical since they're already collectors through actual LEGOs.

Not doing a physical release for a game like this is the obvious move.

Guessing it has something to do with the Switch cart... As mentioned which makes sense.

It's not a good sign at all, the digital e-shop version will still be published by PlayStation Publishing LLC. They're just not ready YET for physical Switch publishing. Sony will eventually start distributing Switch carts themselves next year when they ramp up their 3rd party endeavors. Especially when the Horizon Zero Dawn remaster/remake drops day one on Switch 2, it will be fully published and distributed by SIE.

Agree with many here.

This has everything to do with Cartridges and Sony simply handing it over to someone else.

It is not just the physical.
The digital version is published by MLBAM… Sony didn’t have any involvement with the publishing outside PS.

It is the same for LEGO Horizon… probably LEGO will publish it on Switch and use that other company for the Physical.

Weird but understandable. Either way, Sony/Lego should be happy with the sales that the game will get on Switch considering the fact that Nintendo doesn't have anything major this holiday season, no major third party games like Assassin's Creed or COD and due to the type of game it is, will sell best on Switch anyway.
