In the beginning, there was only the Primordial Crystal.
Eventually, for time had no meaning then, two gods emerged from the Crystal. They have had many names throughout the ages, but the first civilization to be called them “The Eternal Light” and “The Eternal Darkness”.
The Eternal Light created many planets and filled them with life. The Eternal Darkness saw no point to their existence and sought to destroy them all. The two godly brothers fought a ferocious battle, with countless innocent lives lost in the crossfire, and in the end the Eternal Light proved victorious. But he could not bring himself to kill his brother, so he sealed the Eternal Darkness inside the Crystal, and then fell asleep, weakened from the toll the fight had taken on him, and has not awakened since.
Amongst the planets that had been spared from the war between the gods, there are two that will prove of special interest to us. Both planets were host to a wide variety of species, from wild beasts to sapient creatures, and they both saw intelligent life grow and form civilizations. For convenience’s sake, we’ll refer to them as “Planet A” and “Planet B”.
Planet A’s dominant civilization lived in harmony with nature and learned how to manipulate the natural energy of the planet, an act that would be known as “magic”. Thanks to their mastery of magic, they managed to establish contact with the first creations of the Eternal Light, beings of great power whom they worshipped as gods, for they had never met an actual god before. These beings gifted them with magical stones which could be used to summon them, in exchange for their worship.
But lesser races grew fearful and envious of these people and the power they wielded, so they rose up in arms and waged war against them. It was a bloody and terrible war, the likes of which that world had never known before. The dominant tribe ended up being massacred, down to merely a few scattered remaining descendants. And so, humanity became the dominant species in the planet.
As an aside, the very first creation of the Eternal Light, whose worshippers had all perished during the war, vanished and was never seen again, not before swearing that one day he would return to bring the world its Doomsday. But that’s a story for another time.
In Planet B, on the other hand, its dominant civilization evolved through science and technology. They built machines that harnessed the natural energy of the planet and used it to power up their cities.
Until the day came when the planet’s natural resources were exhausted. Facing the threat of extinction, political leaders came up with a solution: to find another planet in which life could flourish, exterminate its native inhabitants and claim it for their own. Planet A, in fact. They would do so by extracting the souls of their people and implanting them into the bodies of that planet’s dominant species. A particularly wise scholar was put in charge of the project.
The scholar created servants to aid him in his task, through genetic engineering. He knew that the soul transfer would only work if the intended vessels felt intense feelings of despair and hopelessness. So he sent his two most advanced servants into Planet A, with the mission to sow discord and cause as much chaos, death and destruction as they could, to destabilize order within that world and make its population susceptible to the transfer.
And that’s where the story begins.
