I doubt portal even needs to sell 10 million to be a success. Profit determines success and I'm sure selling less than that will net Sony a nice sum.
Turns out Sony had been working on the Portal since 2017 and it was at one point made from the Dualshock 4.

Not really....I don't wanna turn this into a Jim Ryan hate thread but you said he could've cancelled ps portal.... sure, but there was literally no reason to. Conversely, he also could've killed pc ports since there were many reasons to, but instead he went full throttle and put all of the biggest games on pc and bought an entire studio dedicated to pc...So no he gets no credit. I'm being fair too
My money is on ps portal is a project that was shelved during ps4 but after Sony saw how successful the switch was they picked it back up. Something like this probably goes through the r&d pipeline in 2 years tops. I personally think they probably started this when all the gamepass/cloud streaming marketing and shilling hit fever pitch in 2020/2021 and they wanted this to compete.
Streaming tech just wasn't good enough at the time probably. I highly doubt it was shelved
I don't think sales #s dictate success for this type of accessory. As long as it's satisfying some sort of customer demand it's a success and by the looks of it it's a huge untapped market. A device like this being well-received keeps customers in the ecosystem and means they're less likely to look elsewhere for gaming needs.
Im actually surprised they didn't considering how hard they were pushing xcloud 2 years ago

There were rumors about the Xcloud usb stick thingy. Very well could be 1 coming down the road.
usb stick is different than a handheld. maybe they weren't confident enough that it would sell and they figured that they would rather piggyback off the relatively strong xbox controller market (i.e. people already had xbox controllers and screens)
All this hype about the PS Portal is making me think this is the hottest gift this holiday season, up there with Roblox and Squishmallows. I'm jealous I didn't bother to preorder.
Actually I just tried playing Hogwarts Legacy and it looks amazing. It's like playing natively on my phone. People are sleeping on this feature.
Did you try the remote play app on your phone? It's not fun to control and it drains the battery.

Portal Def seems as the hot item of this holiday. Once it restocks it'll sell out again.
It cracks me up that the Logitech Gcloud is basically the Xbox equivalent of the portal and has sold so poorly that they’ve been discounted by 30% at times but still haven’t sold in significant numbers, then Sony just walks in and launches the Portal and makes headlines with how fast they sold out.

I had to google gcloud. Never had heard of it. What an ugly overpriced mess. No wonder it doesn't sell. 349$ lmfao. I thought 199$ was alot.

To be fair, it’s a well-made Android handheld that does more than the Portal does, but compared to other, similar handhelds it’s about $70-$100 too expensive at MSRP.
