Nintendo and The Pokémon Company filed a lawsuit against Pocketpair in Japan last year, alleging that Palworld infringes on three patents that are related to monster catching gameplay, all of which were initially filed by Nintendo and The Pokemon Company between February and July last year. Palworld was released on January 19, 2024.

On Thursday, Pocketpair confirmed it had previously patched out the ability to summon Pals via 'Pal Spheres' due to the legal action, and confirmed that further changes were coming in order to avoid disrupting future development and releases.
"On November 30th, 2024, we released Patch v0.3.11 for Palworld," it said. "This patch removed the ability to summon Pals by throwing Pal Spheres and instead changed it to a static summon next to the player.

"Several other game mechanics were also changed with this patch. As many have speculated, these changes were indeed a result of the ongoing litigation. Everyone here at Pocketpair was disappointed that this adjustment had to be made, and we fully understand that many players feel the same frustration.

"Unfortunately, as the alternative would have led to an even greater deterioration of the gameplay experience for players, it was determined that this change was necessary."
In addition, Pocketpair said that with the implementation of Patch v0.5.5 this week, "we must make yet another compromise".

"From this patch onward, gliding will be performed using a glider rather than with Pals. Pals in the player's team will still provide passive buffs to gliding, but players will now need to have a glider in their inventory in order to glide.

"We understand that this will be disappointing for many, just as it is for us, but we hope our fans understand that these changes are necessary in order to prevent further disruptions to the development of Palworld.

"We also want to extend our apologies to our fans for the discomfort and concern this ongoing litigation has caused. We remain committed to developing Palworld and delivering exciting new content to our fans."

Fuck every single fighting game that isn't Street Fighter for ripping off Street Fighter 2?

I don’t remember any fighting game like Street Fighter 2 at all.

Are you talking about Art of Fighting?

Edit - Reading about the only clone was Karnov’s Revenge and Capcom aued them.

Others games were not considered clones… and even this one watching videos I understand why Capcom lose the lawsuit while Nintendo won.

Imagine being able to patent general video game mechanics. This literally breaks about a third of video games that have anything to do with animal companions. Pretty soon, games like Monster Hunter and Witcher will be targeted by these ridiculous excuses for "patents".
In time, Nintendo will patent "making a video game", and then they will destroy the entire gaming industry in an instant, and win billions from every company and person in the world who's ever made a video game, and they will become the true gods of the gaming world. Their path to world domination is well on its way.

The problem here is that Nintendo is not suing them for developing something similar to pokemon on the designs etc.. that would be kinda ok.

They are straight out suing using a patent for gameplay mechanics (throwing a ball to summon a companion). This is fucked. All patent systems out there should straight out be deleted, it's just trash

Throwing a pokeball is iconic... it basically the mark of Pokémon with the sound and everything else.
My kid with less than 3 years knows that you have pokeballs and how to get pokémons.

So yes... a gameplay specif action that breaks the bubble to even casuals knows it.
They should be sued and they will lost... different with Capcom with SFII trying to sue due generic gameplay mechanics.

It is similar if any game used the Hadouken move.... you will say but it is a projectile that you can see in a lot of games... no, it is not just a projectile... it is a Hadouken... no other game can copy a Hadouken while all games can have different projectiles in their games.
It is another gameplay mechanics that breaks the gaming bubble just like how it throw a pokeball in Pokémon games.

I mean... there are several ways to Pocketpair summon a monster using different ways and better ways than copy the pokeball throwing.
Now they are disappointed to have to make a lazy summon animation? Why not do better and create your own way of summon things?

Wasn't the pokeball throw robbed off some old Japanese tv show?

They all steal key mechanics from it. Super meters, health-bars, characters automatically turning to face eachother, advanced button combinations that combine what would have been basic punches and kicks into a more powerful and distinctly different attack. All are as much or more a bespoke creation of Street Fighter I and II than throwing a sphere was in Pokemon.

They were taken from the capsule creatures in Ultraman. But you didn't literally throw them in a ball.... I think, never watched Ultraman.
