Warframe. Where do you start with a game like that?
Well, back in 2013, at Digital Extremes, with the Canadian team of developers, which are also known for collaborating/developing many other games, among the most famous ones being Unreal, Unreal Tournament, Dark Sector, BioShock (the PS3 port), Star Trek, and the recently announced Soulframe.
The game is set into humanity's future, with Tenno (the player faction) being an ancient race of warriors, who are sent to fight a war into a planetary system populated by different factions. The central point of the game, the player's warframe is what gives the game its originality, because this armored suit can embrace various forms and abilities, and each warframe will basically play like a new class for the player. At this point in game, there's a total of 84 warframes from which to choose.
The game is free-to-play on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S and it includes both PVE and PVP (known as Conclave), supported by microtransactions, which allows players to buy in-game items with real money, but also offers the option to obtain the same items by simply playing the game.
"Set in the future, players control members of the Tenno, a race of ancient warriors who have awoken from a century-long cryosleep as they awake again on Earth, with their memories about the Old War lost for the moment. In the Solar System, they find themselves at war with the Grineer, a matriarchal race of militarized and deteriorated human clones built upon metal, blood, and war; the Corpus, a mega-corporation with advanced robotics and laser technology built upon profit; the Infested, disfigured victims of the Technocyte virus; and the Sentients, a race of self-replicating machines made by a long-dead transhuman race known as the Orokin. The Lotus guides the Tenno through difficult situations, as well as gives hints which help the player defeat enemies. To fight back, the Tenno use bio-mechanical suits, the eponymous Warframes, to channel their unique abilities."
Here is a list of the Warframe profiles for the people interested to find out more:
On a personal level and from my own experience, I have played the game for almost two years and a half now, and I can honestly say (having no connection whatsoever with Digital Extremes) that this game can absolutely be played without ever spending real money on it, since all the updates which include new areas, warframes, weapons, companions etc can be obtained by just playing the game. There are free Warframe packs on PlayStation store though, for the ones who want to try extra items at no time-cost involved (AKA grinding).
And because I am a bad, bad cat, I also dragged the resident fish into this game, AKA @Sircaw, which I will gladly invite into this thread as well, before he barges in anyway
