Why talk about shit when he can just let devs finish development and launch them directly to you?

I like Jim's approach, i feel like there's too much talking in the industry and there really is nothing to talk about outside of playing a great video game.
Hype sells, just look at Cyberpunk. There is no drawback to anouncing things in advance, it's the only thing Xbox gets right and pretty much how they are able to run on just hopium and fool 50m people each gen. As soon as MS can they'll announce stuff like Quake, Doom, WoW 2, WarCraft, TES, Fallout, etc.

Sony use to announce games years in advanced. But they’ve said they don’t want to do that anymore and announce games closer to release. Only recent example of them going against that is Wolverine.

Sony Japan doesn't control everything PlayStation. SIE headquarters are in the US and there is no reason to assume they don't have a lot of autonomy given that all other Sony subsidiaries operate with a lot of independence including overlap and conflicting strategies between them like SIE having a movie production company, Aniplex/Sony Pictures/Sony Music producing their own games, Sony Electronics having their own line of gaming focused products disconnected from PlayStation and so on.


There is of course some independence and ideas that come from the USA division, but it still has to be approved by Japan.

The devs were pushing for this shit... likely because between productions they have a lot of people sitting around doing fuck all that could be making PC versions of games while the new games are in pre-production... Devs WOULD push for that, because that way they don't lose people when they keep them busy...

A large change in the way Sony makes games for 20+ years from full exclusives to now putting some games on PC is not coming from a bunch of developers. It’s a business decision coming from corporate and many meetings and number crunching to calculate how it will affect their main console business.

I refuse believe Sony first party for whatever reason just decided wanting to make games for PC when developers prefer working on one platform because it’s easier. Especially Sony developers.

What really made me write this was Square coming out confirming what we all knew.... that Octopath 2 went to PS5 and Switch because Xbox sales were non-existent.

PS leadership could have come out strong gainst the Congress people and MSFT's assertions, they could have embarrassed Xbox and MSFT right there on the public stage but they didn't.... easy wins are being left on the table.

I just don't get it tbh.
How are the two related at all? Was Octopath mentioned in the letter?

It mentioned deals that exclude Xbox in Japan in the congress letter.... Octopath 2 skipped Xbox and many were saying that it was due to an exclusionary deal, so this just proved that wrong and it probably goes for many games.... companies just look at sales data and decide to skip platforms where their games do not perform.

It makes sense.

only reason games like Miles Morales, Returnal, Ratchet, Demon's Souls etc were announced close to launch was because of the PS5 launch

Man... you do realize that nobody is saying that there isn't nuance to the way things happened.. Of course the developers didn't LITERALLY force Sony to do it, and they just threw up their hands and said OK!... They planted the idea.. and continued to bring it up to corporate. From there, corporate obviously makes the decisions and figures out the business side of it.

They look at their competition and they are in the PC market.. Investors ask questions like.. why aren't we trying to enter that market.. it's different from ours? And they form a plan that works for them. And again, you have studios with talent sitting around when transitioning between big releases.. it helps to keep them busy. The developers have undoubtedly been reiterating the pros of doing these relatively risk free ventures.

Did it mention Octopath by name or not, because we know for a fact that Sont and Square do havw exclusivity deadls for other games.

So, that Sony did stopped focusing on twitter everyone knows because that platform is a toxic swamp. Not even Nintendo is focus on it.
Xbox does their marketing there because that’s where their fanbase is.

Sony is focusing on real things that gives allure to their brand, what you think it has more impact? A Oreo Xbox cookie or a giant hammer in London!?

Of course if you focus only in online drama it seems MS is winning - it’s their focus. But real brand recognition doesn’t work like that.

About the online interviews and media sliding with MS… it’s just an eco chamber and that is something that is not new, it has always been like that.
In the real world people just want to play games.

I also fully expect the Sony experience to return.

I think you are over reacting. In recent years they increased communication, but using their own channels.

Instead of making only one or two presential conferences per year for relevant announcements and updates (traditionally E3 and TGS, sometimes instead of TGS at Gamesscom ot PS Experience) they now make many different digital events (State of Play/PlayStation Showcase/etc) across the year, plus also sometimes also have spare announcements in Game Awards, Doritos Summer Fest, CES, etc.

On top of that, they also make many nice announcements or updates at the PS Blog and spread them via their social media channels. As could be the recent NG+ info for GoWR or the typical 'afternoon with several PS Indies showcases'.

Their social media channels broke many records for the industry specially compared to their direct competitors. They have the biggest amount of followers and subscribers on Instagram, Twitter, Youtube etc and also achieved record engagament with some posts and videos.

They announce their stuff via their own channels, controlling the message, and then all the media covers it. Their announcements and releases are covered by basically everybody that makes sense, and the amount of reviews on MC is an example. They also often get great reviews (there are some haters and people with other tastes, obviously), many years being the best reviewed or one of the best reviewed publishers or games.

They get recognized earning a shit ton of awards every year. In many years, getting a PS exclusive as the most awarded game, and being the publisher who gets more awards.

Hermen and Jimbo give a few interviews per year, but they are focused on their job which is not to give interviews. Often what they say is misinterpreted making them sound bad or people take some sentence and put it out of context to make it sound bad. But that is not their fault.

But if we look at the results of this communication we see that they achieve record metrics in basically everything: the monster demand selling out their consoles, record sales of consoles (when enough are available) and games, awesome reviews and record amounts of awards, and also achieve record numbers in social media accounts (Instagram, Twitter, Youtube...) not only for themselves but also compared with their competition.

Meanwhile real voices for PlayStation, that have been there for years and done things the hard way (starting from nothing) have been ignored.... Last Stand Media, Jaybari, MBG, Crossfire Podcast, BRAP, Reforge gaming, Mystic etc...
Sony's PR, like any other big publisher or console maker, cover a shit ton of gaming media channels but obviously can't cover every single one of the many millions that there are in the world. So they focus in the main ones, which obviously are the bigger ones. If new smaller ones do a great job over time and grow enough will be noticed by them and will receive codes and press releases etc.

If we look at the results (social media metrics, consoles/games/game subs sales, reviews, awards...) Sony wins by a big margin.

I think it's more being left up to the devs to decide. Druckmann specifically mentioned this with regards to Naughty Dog and was evident in the announcement and release of the Part 1 remake

I mean its pretty clear they aren't rushing to any announcements by the fact they don't have anything besides Spiderman 2 on the schedule really

Well I think after seeing Sony force them to ship TLoU's buggy mess of a PC port in March so it would come out before the fiscal year ended, and was still close to the show for easy marketing, I doubt that. The publisher ultimately controls it all. Sounds more like a PR trained way to avoid saying "our games aren't coming out anytime soon and we've got shit to show rn lol"

I bet Part 1 was revealed and released on PS5 quickly because they knew it would be a toxic few months of people leaving negative comments on everything about it. (Fun times lol) Nobody wants like a year of that tedious shit. Plus its a simple remake of a classic so it kinda sells itself.
