I still see remnants of RE4’s influence.
GTA 3 - blue print for open world games
Halo/Halo 2 - first one was the blue print for FPS on consoles, the second was the blueprint for how online gaming is
RE4 - The blueprint for Third Person Shooters to this day

About RE4, me too. RE5 was a good coop game but so far away from Resident Evil.
RE8 I really enjoyed. Yes the ending was action packed but I think it was ok because prior to the end they really did justice of the old RE formula.
Horror check. Metroidvania level design, big check. Lots and lots of connecting level design, in the overall map and each section too. And also they brought it all back together with the lore. Lots more enemy variety than RE7 (which I also enjoyed ) I hope they keep it up with RE9
Yeah, the game was good overall, but that ending... If I did not know better I could have mistaken it for COD with werewolves.

I'd say that even if they took a ton of things of other games, the most influential games of that decade were:
  • GTA3 (blueprint for 3D open world games)
  • World of Warcraft (blueprint for MMORPGs)
  • Halo 1 (blueprint for FPS on console with decent controls)
  • Uncharted / Uncharted 2 (blueprint for action adventures with great cinematics, set pieces and acting)
  • Resident Evil 4 (blueprint for TPS over the shoulder camera)

Warcraft 3.

The amount of games spawned from this specific title is insane...

Also Demons Souls, maybe?

GTA3 was easily the most influential.

Some other very influential games:
Persona 3
DOTA
Half-Life 2
TF2
Left 4 Dead
Portal
Demon's Souls
MGS2
Dear Eshter
Fahrenheit
I was wondering why you left RE4 off but then I saw your reply in the other thread

Smash Bros Melee - Pretty much set the standard for competitive fighters

Counter Strike - set the standard for competitive multiplayer fps games

Half Life 2 - Set the standard for environmental intractability

The Sims - pretty much set the blueprint for life sim games

Devil May Cry 1 and 3, pretty much created the character action genre and set the blueprint for every hack and slash game after
I am really hoping to play thru both Half Life 1 and 2 later this year for the 20 Year Anniversary of HL2. I am really really hoping valve decided to release both games on modern systems like PS5 but I don't mind buying them on steam if I have to

Lol cod with warewolves.
It was super action like, Im glad they used the trailer music for it though, I got hyped haha.

It felt like it was an over the top throw back to the end of RE games when they dramatic music starts, countdown and hordes of zombies while you get to he choppa!! Or elevator lol

Its also influential because it led to the rise of Steam, and the death of physical PC games.

Mercenaries mode was great fun though. They should reserve their heavy action for that.

If you never played them get the "Black Mesa" version of Half-Life, this is the first game completely remade using HL2's engine with updated graphics (and minor changes).

So it has been about 8 months since I made this thread and one thing I want to point out is how only 1 or 2 people here mentioned COD 4. I think this game personally defined every first person shooter out there for at least a decade afterwards if not to this very day and seeing it be looked over is pretty wild to see.

The other is how Wii Sports also only got one mention in this thread when I think it helped standardize motion controls we still see in console gaming (Gyro) and VR Gaming.

But I have another question for you guys relating to Nintendo. Since Ocarina of Time is arguably the most influential game on the N64 and Wii Sports was the most influential on the Wii. What was GameCube's most influential game?

If it's Resident Evil 4 I find it pretty crazy how it is one of the most influential games on a Nintendo system didn't come from Nintendo themselves. A pretty rare occurrence on a Mario machine.
