During the Ps3/Vita days we had hundreds maybe even thousands of Classic Psone and 2 games, it was great and funny enough the ps2 games on ps3 ran a lot better than on ps4.

Why did these games never get ported over to the PS4/5?

I get they add trophies to some games, but the third parties like Tekken 2 and Tekken 6 psp don't even have trophies added in.

If it's licencing issues, why cant we at least have more Sony first parties?

Why don't we have Ps2 games yet?

I really just want to replay the ps2 Ratchet games and try Sly for the first time.

I think licenses. Classic games are also ports. They would need the publisher to agree to keep this classic ports exclusive to PS4/PS5. For example Xeno Gears they would need to figure out a deal for a re-release.

A lot of those classic games ppl associate with ps aren’t owned by ps from the ps1, ps2, era and the ps3 games still have issues being emulated because of the cell processor. So rights for older games changed a number of times and their maybe some legal hurdles to overcome. For instance initial Bandai wouldn’t let Sony resell its classics on psn for some reason and they’ve only allowed sales to halo a few months ago. PS can’t just bring back any game they want to. That said it is strong rumored that ps is refining its emulators and we be getting more classics and even will be able to buy ps3 games and download thrm. But we’ve been hearing that forever so take it with a huge grain of horsesht

I really don't understand why these companies refuse to licence their games. Throwing away easy money over arrogance and greed.

I will just emulate them if they keep up this bullshit

Eh I dont buy it. PS3 and Vita had a much better library of PS1/PS2/PSP games.
Suikoden 2 came out in like 2013/2014 after the PS4 launch. Around the time Andrew house was telling people classic games will be coming to PS4.
No reason PS3 and Vita got Suikoden and more games while PS4 didnt ever get them until recently.

Its laziness and not interested in the small amount of money it brings.

They done it once with PS3, they could do it again. Sony is a huge Platform, Im sure they can sort it out if they wanted to.

Its licensing. The older a game gets the harder it becomes to license. The reason it was easier to license on PS3 was because the games weren't nearly as old as they are now.

People dont understand the complexity of licensing, I would have hoped the whole Unity debacle would have taught people something.

A game has a bunch of different licenses including music license, sound effects licenses, animation licenses, game engine license and even physics engine license engines among many others.

If you used these third party properties to make your games back in the day they had license fees you had to pay. Some of the companies may not even exist anymore or figuring out how to even pay the fees may be way to difficult to figure out.

You can even look up how difficult it was for the developers of The Tomorrow Children to get the rights back to their game because of all the different licenses and the game came out in what, 2016? Sony helped them but it was still very difficult. Now imagine doing that for a game from 20+ years ago

I'll give one quick example: Motorstorm used Havok for physics. Guess who owns Havok now.

The entire ps3 classic lobrary of psone games wwre ported to vita with a single update. Why couldn't the same be done for the ps4 and 5? It's beyond ridiculous

If it didn't make enough money, why did companies keep porting their games all those years?

I guess emulation is the only way Play these games then, these archaic copyright laws really do suck.

What does that even means though are you really that dumb to understand that middleware license are not the same as music licensing or IP licensing

Licenses and adding a steady stream of games to make money over many years.

Would be better if they just release these games to buy or have the option to play on premium.

Seems like Sony prefer the slow approach.

So? WWE games used Havok engine last time I looked, alongside other technical logos like Oodle texture packing on the splash screen.

That's no barrier. Sony can pay that engine license.

Totally agree.

It makes no sense and licenses is just an excuse at this point

Plus it shouldnt all just be about money, PS had made plenty of money, they should do it for the Fans. And they will make enough money from it too

Sometimes there is an option to buy the games, but sometimes it dissapears. PS online is just so amatuerish at times, it seems like its 2 people in an office doing everything.

We need to change copyright laws, it should be able to be ported to different console generations without issue.

They can get royalties or a one time fee

I never wanted trophy support and fancy bollocks adding tbf. I would have been happy in 2014 if more games got wrapped in the ps4 emulation wrapper, like how Parapa PSP did. Or for more Vita games to get the Tearaway Unfolded glowup. Or they made the existing PS2 emulators public facing and dashed out more BC games, especially anything 1P that they own, onto PStore/PSNow.

I'd say it's licensing issues. Depending how they were signed, the license for PSOne Classics (or PS2 etc) could be for a PSP or PS3 version only or time limited to a certian amount of years.

In case of 1st party games, in many cases there can be licensing issues with music tracks, real car brands, real weapon brands, sports clothing brands, sports teams, sports players, 2nd party team who developed the game and in the case of older games (around more or less PS1-PS2 age and earlier, it was common that in some big games there were some important people in the game, as the creative director in some cases that got a portion of the royalties from the IP or the game and in some cases required related paperwork to get their ok for future ports and pay them part of the revenue from these ports.

Sometimes these companies or persons are no longer available, in other times they consider that the combined costs of to renew these licenses combined to the one of making the paperwork needed for a new release (fill the metadata of the store, do legal work, art assets needed for the stores, some testing to verify it works in the new platform, age rating process and fees etc.) is bigger than the money that the publisher (or Sony in case of 1st parties) estimates that this new version will generate.

Or in other cases, they may have the people who should work on it busy with other things they think have more priority or are more important becuase may generate them more money.

Or maybe people who should work on it may be busy with something else: in case of PSN stuff maybe things like the recent improvements we saw in PS cloud gaming improvements (PS5 games and features support, incresing streaming quality to 4K + HDR + 3D audio), preparing the OS part of PS Portal in PS5 and PS Portal side, making the Sony Pictures Core app and its partial integration in PS+ etc., a few months earlier the PSVR2 integration, or adding support for the recently released or announced gamepads or headsets etc. kept some people busy.

We also saw some Sony job offers to make new emulators and improve existing ones. This may mean that they prefer to wait to release some titles that may cause incompatibilities in the current emulators or until the emulators are good enough. Or that they may be working on releasing somewhere in the future PS1/PS2/etc classics on PC or mobile, probably on their own PC/mobile PSN store.

Another possibility is that they are waiting until the planned release of PS Cloud gaming on smartphones, tablets and smart tvs (plus maybe PS Portal too) somewhere in the future.

These things would expand their potential sales for each classic game released, so maybe are waiting for it before releasing them until that moment because -at least for some games- right now the potential sales wouldn't be enough.
