They just spent $70 billion on Activision/Blizzard, sustainability doesn't exist and they don't care about it, and they don't need to. Microsoft's full weight is behind Xbox now, and they will keep pushing, and pushing, and pushing until overall market dominance.

This isn't about sustainability, it's about loss leading until the eventual overcoming. They could lose money forever and it wouldn't matter, they have a near infinite supply of it.

Their goal isn't to compete, their goal is to spend and grow to a point where there is no competition.
I'm not sure they are and I'm pretty sure they won't get market dominance. Xbox still seems like a second thought to them, specially compared to Azure.

Going off my shitty memory, wasn't even SEGA Channel an in-the-90s version of GamePass? Using your cable lines to send you a timed selection of games that would enter and leave the service?

My cousin had sega channel. It was fucking genius. I got to play Gargoyles, The lion king off of it.

Sega was ahead of everyone in my opinion in the 90's.

What an inspiring tale.

Not going to happen tho, $80B+ spent already and still in last place with no perspective of ever changing that and no games to be seen.

MS tried to do the same in the smartphone market and failed. They've been doing it since the PS2 days and failing. I don't think this will change. MS doesn't understand gaming, just like they didn't understand the mobile market.

They wanted to be the Netflix of gaming, changed their entire gaming strategy and business model around that, invested all those billions, then Netflix melted and turned to shit once the competition showed up.

Not what but who. Phil its time to go, you have had years to get decent games out from your studios, but they appear to be in shambles.

They need a time machine to roll back time to early X360 years (that management team) and that ain't happening. The plus side? Covid, the economic downturn (inflation) and the silicon shortage has given them extra life. Incredible really. Had none of those things being part of the mix, the Series S wouldn't have sold nearly 3/4's as much and the PS5 would have close to a 3/4 sales advantage worldwide vs. the Series X/S pair.

Inflation is making consumers price concious and thus the Series S, and Gamepass become attractive. The chip shortage sort of equalizes demand by capping the supply of the more on demand product - the PS5, etc etc. All of these issues have been a godsend and a lifeline to MS by any objective measure.

For me, xbox now just feels like a casual coworker device (to whom I also recommend it).
It lacks the edge, exclusives and feels like it's just indie games (even if it's not).
Aside from that some other quirks:
-I have 20th anniv series controller and I hate the sharp top inside of sticks and really dislike the clicky dpad and clicky shoulder buttons. They are clicky like a mouse.. it's loud and distracts me. I prefer dualsense softer feel.
-The DRM is still an issue if I understand it correctly
-The physical games are almost dead on that platform if I understand correctly.
+Backwards compat with 360 is awesome

Yep, imagine how the Xbox would be doing if the Series S/X actually had to go against a PS5 without production/stock problems.

In terms of pushing console sales, games like Horizon FW, GT7, Miles Morals, likely God of War Ragnarok are all being wasted. While MS shamelessly released a console with no launch line up then very little else over the next two years.

They're like the off-brand product on a super market shelf. Folks will simply buy it just because. Now, if your customer base has reduced disposable income due to an economic downturn + inflation, and the more on-demand brand product is facing shortages consumers will naturally take that off-brand product as a suitable substitute, even if it doesn't taste quite the same.

It's sad to see mediocrity get rewarded in this way, specially knowing the push to change the industry into a subscription centric gaming experience, destroying the current model that has brought gaming to where it's at today...... but it happens all the time with different product classes.

What new games did MS release on the launch window? You want them to get credit for some mediocre third-party releases from Ubisoft? Come on bruh, they had nothing.
Launch window was in late 2020 it is now mid 2022
Xbox did fine with no games as you said it
But sales charts shows Xbox is not that far off from PS5 sales & that with no games

What sales charts? VG Chartz? Come on.

Congratulation for doing fine with no game I guess... launch window or not, very lackluster output regardless and not lookin like it's getting better anytime soon with that Starfield first showing.

Famitsu sales charts & also the UK sales charts
Wile VG Chartz are not 100% accurate as they do estimate
They are still a good judge of how things are going

& about the Starfield statement it looks good people are hype

The System seller is Starfield the people clowning on Starfield don't know what a monster size game it will be
It sucks that it could not make it in 2022 but 2023 is looking to be a massive year for Xbox
