Sony president: PSN has 118M MAUs, half are on PS4. What does Sony need to do to bring them over to PS5?

That wouldn't be smart: half of their active userbase is still on PS4, PC is providing them several hundreds of millions per year wth a huge profitability and yearly growth with no negative effect to their console business.

And almost nobody buy the PS classics.,

Logic is not icon eras forte. For sure a cash strapped audience still on ps4 will build a PC for 800 USD at least and start from scratch in a new ecosystem instead of selling their old console + 300/350 USD to buy the new one while keeping all their games...

They see the PC boogeyman everywhere.

Last gen started so shit, why won't it just fucking die already.

That said, its not like the added power is actually giving us much of anything.
Even the extra power since PS port it’s game to PC it’s likely PS4 gamers just migrate to PC since they see no reason to get PS5 since no exclusive + PC has PS, Xbox, PC & Steam games. PC just has a wider library & Sony is helping PC players build a PS library on PC/Steam instead on PS console Sony own platform

Now do Xbox, Stephen Totilo.

And let us see exactly how many players transitioned early to the new platform thanks to the cheaper Series S.
I hate these kinda people that make disingenuous post. Doesn’t PS MAU also counts PC now & outside PS own console like destiny on Xbox or mlb on Nintendo? Wouldn’t that also be a monthly active player or is it solely PlayStation console because it makes it seem like it’s broad grouping.

It’s like Mat P saying console market not growing when you have Xbox that completely exploded in a fiery flame (no one thought series s/x would sell 50% less then Xbox one). Once Xbox is completely removed console market will look more stabilized with Nintendo, PS & Steam (unless PS doesn’t some stupid like day n date or continue porting games & we see serious negative effect to PS console sells)

Console market with PS, Nintendo & Steam will be 250-300 million a nice healthy number. And this number can be increase if PS double down on its own console w more exclusive & those exclusive being permanent like Nintendo. Also PS being a traditional box console if PS6 is a hybrid handheld there should be massive growth combining both market like Nintendo into 1 hardware PS console selling 150+ million is possible it’s Sony choice they chose whether they wana strengthen PC market & competitors like Steam gain more market share & sells by becoming the defacto gaming platform & storefront

At the cost of there own platform & storefront lol

Diminishing your own platform & storefront to help & further grow your competitors platform all cause you yourself get the small benefits of some form of short term growth & what I call short term “negative profits”

Sony hasn't used PSN login much with their PC games and we know their games prior to Helldivers don't have high active use. Even if the number included PC players it would be negligible.

Sony almost certainly wants a future where PSN exists on PC and PC users subscribe to PS+.

after 10 years of Phil shittalk, this one looking in retrospective, how much true Don was with this interview.
Context matters, fortunately he successfully killed Xbox one at the start of the gen and made PS3->PS4 transition a no brainier.

no, he didn't. because PS3 exist and it denies it. PS3 had very poor start, yet finished very very strong, even mid gen PS3 was amazing. so it refutes the notion that he killed X1.
Yes, they were at disadvantaged, doesn't mean they couldn't bounce back especially with massively different in finances compared to Sony.

Yeah at tht point 360 led off to Xbox One on a gd note, it was Xbox themselves with their messaging and bs tht killed the One.

EA and Activision could really help people move over to current gen.

But doesn't seem like they are interested in doing current gen only games.

EA will probably released their sports games on ps4 all the way to next gen.

People didn't have a problem to throw whatever library they collected out of the window and just switch to another platform. People also don't have a problem to just own multiple platforms.

Xbox's problem has always been to give people no reason to own one, first it was the sudden focus on Kinect, than TV TV TV and DRM and again Kinect, which ruined whatever interesting games they had at the beginning of the XOne gen, yet people still bought their consoles for the (few and subpar) exclusives. Then they started porting their games to PC and the rest is history.

Yeah nothing I said contradicts that, Mattrick's blunder here and their messaging help kill Xbox one... How can someone say no he didn't?

Fully expect in the future that in order to play a PS game either singleplayer or multiplayer game to create a PSN account just like take 2 does with red dead 2 & likely gta6

Like Neon Koi mobile game I fully expect for you to make a PSN account or use Apple ID on iOS

Sony needs more control on platforms outside of the PS console they don’t wana end up in a Blizzard Valve situation etc

I can see PS+ being less as a library & more of a multiplayer centric subscription where users who play PS multiplayer games can gets exclusive cosmetic for all PS publish multiplayer games. Because PS+ will fail on PC & mobile, both of those market don’t care about a big library of games & more care about multiplayer exclusive cosmetic etc.

PC & Mobile players aren’t going to care about PS+ big library especially if there console AAA singleplayer games & not the kinda games there respective platform caters to

For instance for people who subscribe to PS+ on PS or PC you get exclusive helldivers 2 cosmetic, exclusive Fairgames cosmetic, exclusive Concord, Marathon, Destiny cosmetics for subscribing to PS+. Also split PS+ with PS+, PS+PC & PS+Mobile so I user ok either platform has to double stack if they play outside a PS console. Keep the free monthly game & big library of games exclusive to PS console that way you can give reason to own a PS console if a consumer wanted to get in a subscription with a big library to play games. Sony should take a not from fortnite with the fortnite crew cosmetic subscription

I doubt cosmetics will be the large selling point, but rather the feature set I think is what Sony is going to want to try to sell.

  • Classic games
  • Streaming catalog
  • Streaming privately owned games
  • Free monthly games

All of these can and will eventually apply to multiple devices, PC, MacOS, iOS, Android, SmartTVs, but with an obvious emphasis on their core devices, which will be PlayStation consoles and handhelds.
