I think entrenched fanbases are a HUGE part of it, for both Mario and Souls games. Same reason a lot of people were scared to give MGS V lower than 10s even as they pointed out issues with the game. Some of these fanbases will go to extremes to make your life unpleasant if you score their games...
It's just so weird to me that characters owned by Xbox, their DIRECT COMPETITOR, were allowed to be in the game, but so far it looks like no SE characters were.

Well, as I'm currently experiencing on Twitter, there's a surprisingly large contingent that seems to see this as some sort of "karma" for closing Japan Studio, and who even seem to blame Concord for it directly. It's kind of weird.
