Avalanche Studios closes New York and Montreal locations, laying off nine percent of staff​

"This is an exceptionally difficult decision, but we believe it's necessary to ensure a stable and sustainable future for the company."
Avalanche Studios has closed its New York and Montreal locations, and around 50 employees (nine percent of Avalanche Studios overall) have been laid off as a result, the company announced.

With the closure of its New York and Montreal studios, Avalanche Studios’ only remaining locations are in Stockholm, Malmo, and Liverpool.

This is the Just Cause Avalanche, not the other Avalanche, for those curious.

Boy, they sure have gone downhill huh? The heady days of JC2 are a loooong time ago and even Mad Max/JC3 are deep in the rearview mirror.

JC2 was such a legendary game
JC2 to JC3 could have been like Morrowind to Oblivion, Witcher 2 to Witcher 3, P4 to P5, etc. But they fucked it up with their overly aggressive respawn rate, unbalanced wing-suit, horrible PC port, etc. And you only get one shot at that...

It took those developers a special kind of denialism and dissociation from reality that they saw the massive popularity of the JC2 multiplayer mods and decided to release JC3 without multiplayer/coop. And then saw the massive popularity of the JC3 multiplayer mods and decided to release JC4 without any multiplayer/coop.

And then for JC4 that community just ignored the game and its sales tanked hard.


Which is such a shame because JC2 and JC3 allowed for some crazy gameplay elements that would have made open world coop missions super fun. Like Saints Row 3 on a tropical island.

And yet it also launched with always online (which was later patched out.) I'm sure you've heard that they actually wanted it to be mandatory shared world, built the game for that and then stripped it out at the last conceivable moment, right? Honestly, we're lucky that 3 was as "good" as it was at all, by all rights it should have been far worse.
